If you’ve found your way to this post, chances are you’re searching for barefoot shoes made in the USA for one of two reasons:
1️⃣ You want to support local manufacturing, or
2️⃣ You’re trying to avoid the high prices, shipping costs, and new tariffs that come with ordering from overseas brands.

Either way, you’re in the right place.

Below you’ll find three lists — one for barefoot shoes manufactured in the USA, and another for USA-based brands whose production takes place abroad, and finally, one for foreign-based brands with US distribution.

Let’s start with the first category: barefoot shoes actually made in the USA. While the options are still limited, more have popped up in recent years, and brands like Softstar continue to expand their lineup. That said, since U.S. manufacturing typically comes with higher labor costs, these shoes usually aren’t the most budget-friendly.

If your main goal is simply to avoid the high shipping costs and new tariffs that come with international orders, then check out the second and third lists. These brands are based in the U.S. or have a warehouse in the US for local distribution, which means:

  • Tariffs apply to their wholesale cost, not the full retail price (so the tariff impact is smaller).
  • Brand is responsible for the tariffs, so no surprise bills later (though they’ve likely increased prices to absorb some of the tarrif).
  • Shipping and returns are generally cheaper and easier.
  • You’re still supporting small, independent businesses operating in the US (for the second list)

Encouraging adventure and natural foot development, one hike at a time. Check out our guide to the best barefoot hiking shoes for kids.

Why Choose Barefoot Hiking Shoes for Kids?

Kids are natural explorers—and the right shoes should support, not hinder, their movement. Barefoot hiking shoes are designed to promote healthy foot development, with features like a wide toe box, flexible sole, and zero-drop heel. For children, this can mean better balance, stronger feet, and fewer complaints on the trail.

Whether your child is running through the woods, clambering over rocks, or just tagging along on a family hike, these barefoot hiking shoes combine trail-ready grip with foot-friendly design.

Here are the best barefoot hiking shoes for kids right now.

Xero Shoes Prio

Start at Kids’ Size 12 | $65

Xero Shoes Kids Prio are good travel and hiking shoes

The Prio Kids is a durable, lightweight sneaker-style shoe that’s great for hiking, running, and everyday play. It has a grippy, flexible sole and extra reinforcements around the toe for added protection. The tread is enough for trails, but not so aggressive that they feel out of place in an urban setting. These are a great all-purpose sneaker for hiking and everyday. The Xero Kids’ Prio is also available at REI.

Saguaro Hiking Sneakers

Start at Kids’ Size 7.5/EU24 | $60+ | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

Saguaro Shoes has several affordable barefoot hiking shoes for kids that we love. Styles are updated often, so it can be hard to keep track, but we’ve really liked styles with the sole pictured above. They have enough tread depth to give them some extra grip, and they have a great foot shape. Some have mostly knit uppers like the Agile, while styles like the Cocoa (pictured above) are reinforced with microfiber for better durability. Saguaro Shoes are already one of the most budget-friendly barefoot shoe brands, and code KELLY15 will get you an additional 15% off.

Saguaro Smart Sneakers

Start at Kids’ Size 7.5/EU24 | $44 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

Saguaro Smart sneakers are breathable, affordable barefoot sneakers for kids

The shoes that launched Saguaro’s barefoot brand are still a staple in our hiking shoe lineup. They tick all of the boxes of what we look for in a barefoot hiking shoe, and they have the most affordable price point. They’re ultra-light, breathable, and water-friendly—perfect for hiking in warm or humid climates. The flexible sole and easy elastic lacing system make them great for little ones who want to do it themselves. These are our go-to for summer hiking trips, splashy creek walks, and everything in between.

Vivobarefoot Primus Sport or Trail Knit

Start at EU20 to Adult | $74 – $100 | Code BSG20 for 20% off

These shoes are ultra-lightweight and breathable with a flexible, grippy sole. The Primus Sport has moderate lugs for more versatility, while the Primus Trail Knit is meant to handle some tougher terrain, with a 2.5mm tread depth.

Freet Flex

Start at EU30 | $65 | Code KELLY for 10% off

Freet Flex Junior lightweight barefoot shoes for kids

The Flex sneakers from Freet are another lightweight sneaker that has just enough tread to make these a decent option for some casual summer hiking. The uppers are made from a very breathable but durable recycled mesh that can easily be worn with or without socks, and dry faster than most sneakers if they do get wet. These currently have low stock, but Freet has a few other styles that have a similar sole and breathable uppers, including the Hoppee, Keld and Tanga.

Wildling Tanuki

Start at Kids’ Size8/EU23 through adult | $89 – $119 | Free shipping code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Tanuki barefoot shoes for kids make good travel shoes

Okay, this might not be what you initially picture as a hiking shoe, but on soft trails, these impossibly lightweight shoes feel like a second skin. You could say this for most of Wildling’s barefoot shoes, but we particularly love the Tank for its uppers made of Japanese Washi paper– they’re incredibly breathable and surprisingly durable. This pair pictured above is on its second owner and still holding up!

Xero Shoes Z-Trail Sandals

Start at Kids’ Size 12 | $45

This will be my older son’s fourth summer with the Z-Trails, which tells you all you need to know. These sandals are built for adventure: they’re padded enough for long days, grippy for hikes, and easy to kick off at the beach. While I personally don’t mind strap in-between the toes, my son isn’t a fan, so glad Xero has this option!

Why We Love These for Hiking

All of these barefoot shoes are:

  • Foot-friendly – footwear that supports natural movement and healthy foot development
  • Lightweight – No more lugging around clunky hiking shoes
  • Versatile – Great for walking, hiking, and city exploring
  • Durable – Tested on real kids, in real travel situations, and still going strong.
  • Kid-Friendly – Easy to get on/off, comfortable, and approved by my favorite hiking buddies

Hate toe posts? Try these barefoot sandals without one.

Toe posts can be polarizing—some people love them, some people can’t stand them. While there’s a good argument for toe posts on sandals (especially if you’re hiking or running in them, since they help secure the foot and allow for full toe splay), one of the reasons I love sandals is the variety of designs out there. It’s no fun to feel limited to just one or two styles.

In the barefoot shoe world, though, finding a sandal without a toe post that still fits well, doesn’t look overly wide, and feels good on the foot can be tricky. The width of the strap over the toes is especially important—what works for one foot type may not work for another. But good news: there are some great options out there. And I’ve noted all the details you’ll need below, including if they’re a good fit for narrow, medium or wide width feet.

Here’s a round-up of a few of my favorite barefoot sandals without a toe post.

Groundies Kos barefoot leather sandals without a toe post
Groundies kos

$100 | EU36 – 43 | Best for: medium width

This is my top pick for a versatile leather sandal without a toe post. The width fits my medium feet perfectly, and the 8mm stack height adds just enough cushion. I chose an EU37 for my 23.3cm foot. My code isn’t always active, but you can try KELLY15 for 15% off.

Sportier sandals with adjustable velcro straps and lightly cushioned footbed. Also available at REI.

Final Thoughts

If toe posts just aren’t your thing, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort, foot health, or style to avoid them. While it can take a little more digging to find barefoot sandals that check all the boxes and skip the toe post, I hope this list shows that it’s totally doable, especially with the growing list of barefoot shoe brands and styles. Getting the right width and volume is particularly important when you’re trying to get that barefoot fit, and adjustable options can make that a little bit easier. I hope this list helps you find a pair (or two!) of barefoot sandals without a toe post that you’ll love wearing all season long.

When traveling with kids, every item you pack has to earn its spot—and shoes are no exception. I want my kids to have shoes that allow healthy foot development, but they also need to be lightweight, easy to pack, versatile enough for different activities, and durable enough to hold up on the go.

After traveling extensively with my kids (we’re either searching for our next favorite hike or surf spot, with a few city trips mixed in between), I’ve narrowed down our top barefoot kids’ shoes for summer travel. These shoes are the ones we actually pack and use, summer after summer.

Best Lightweight Casual Sneakers for Travel

Casual sneakers are a must-have on any trip. These are perfect for exploring cities, travel days, and downtime when you don’t need hiking-level durability but still want comfort and foot freedom.

Wildling Tanuki

Start at Kids’ Size8/EU23 through adult | $89 – $119 | Free shipping code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Tanuki barefoot shoes for kids make good travel shoes

These are some of the lightest shoes you’ll ever hold—made from Japanese washi paper, they’re incredibly breathable and pack down super small. Despite looking delicate, they’ve proven to be surprisingly durable. The pair we have is now on its second child and still holding up! Great for warm-weather destinations and days with lots of walking.

Feelgrounds Mesh Original

Start at Kids’ Size8/EU24 | $89 – $119 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

Feelgrounds Mesh barefoot sneakers for kids in dark blue

These breathable mesh sneakers are a great all-around option for travel. They work well in a variety of climates and foot shapes, and they’re easy to clean after long days out. Their minimal sole provides great ground feel, and they’re comfortable enough for everything from airport sprints to all-day city walks. They come in adult sizes as well, and they’re a pair I reach for often both at home and on the road.

Best Lightweight Hiking Sneakers for Travel

If your travels include outdoor adventures, you’ll want a pair of shoes that can handle trails, hills, and dirt without being bulky or heavy. These hiking-friendly barefoot sneakers are tough enough for adventures but versatile enough to wear on lighter days too.

Xero Shoes Prio

Start at Kids’ Size 12 | $65

Xero Shoes Kids Prio are good travel and hiking shoes

The Kids’ Prios are a solid option when we know there’ll be hiking involved. They offer a little more structure than casual sneakers but are still flexible and minimalist. The tread is enough for trails, but not so aggressive that they feel out of place in an urban setting. These are a great all-purpose travel sneaker for active trips.

Saguaro Smart Sneakers

Start at Kids’ Size 7.5/EU24 | $44 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

The shoes that launched Saguaro’s barefoot brand are still a staple in our travel lineup. They’re ultra-light, breathable, and water-friendly—perfect for travel in warm or humid climates. Best Barefoot Sandals for Travel

When packing for a warm-weather trip, sandals are a must—but finding barefoot sandals that kids actually like can be a challenge. These two have been winners in our family for their comfort, function, and travel-friendliness.

Ten Little Splash Sandals

Toddler Size 3 – 2Y | $45

These are what I consider the barefoot answer to Crocs. They’re made from lightweight EVA foam, easy to rinse off, and perfect for beach days, splash pads, or just running around. They’re flexible, have no heel rise, and are great for toddlers. Bonus: they weigh next to nothing in your suitcase!

Wildling Feather

Start at Toddler Size 3/EU 18 through adult | $59 – $89 | Free shipping code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Feather Sandals are minimal sandals for kids and adults

When it comes to packability, these Wildling Feather sandals take up almost no weight or space, and feel as light as a feather to wear. While these aren’t specifically made for water, the microfiber uppers do dry quickly. They’re easy to slip on and off, and the adjustable strap keeps them securely in place.

Why We Love These for Travel

Discover the trendiest barefoot sneakers of 2025—stylish, foot-friendly alternatives inspired by this year’s hottest sneaker trends. Stay comfy without sacrificing style!

Comfort and foot health comes first—always. But even the most dedicated barefoot shoe fans (myself included) still like to stay with the times when it comes to sneaker style. In 2024, I highlighted some of the trendiest styles (think Nike Dunks and Adidas Sambas), but fashion is always evolving. Retro, colorful sneakers are still going strong, but we’re also seeing some new players take the spotlight.

I’ve been in Los Angeles most of the past month, which is one of the best places for trendspotting, especially when it comes to sneakers. I noticed a major uptick in people rocking Onitsuka Tigers, Puma Speedcats, and chunkier New Balance models like the 9060. While some of these trends translate well into the barefoot shoe world, others—especially the ultra-chunky ones—can be a bit trickier to replicate. That said, some new brands have given it a go, and I’m impressed!

Barefoot shoe brands are already drawing inspiration from these popular styles, and a few newer names are carving out their own unique look.

Let’s take a look at the trendiest barefoot sneakers for 2025—and how you can stay stylish and comfortable.

Sizing reference

For most of these shoes, I’ll provide a sizing reference based on my experience with the fit. Read more on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I’m most often a US7.5/EU38 in my barefoot sneakers and casual shoes. My feet are medium (‘B’) width and measure 23.3cm long with a higher instep and narrower ankle. I typically look for shoes with an extra 1.2cm of space.

Features of Barefoot Sneakers

All the shoes featured here have a natural foot-shaped, with the widest point at the toes. The soles are thin, flat and flexible.

Trendy Barefoot Sneakers in 2025

Let’s jump right in! If you’re looking for the most up-to-date sneakers in the barefoot shoe world, start here!

Saguaro Dash Sneakers

Mesh and Microfiber Uppers | $61 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off | Shop Saguaro

Dash barefoot sneakers like Saguaro Shoes are like the Onitsuka Tigers, one of the trendiest barefoot sneakers in 2025

The Onitsuka Tigers seem to be the sneaker of the moment, so the barefoot shoe heavily inspired by these had to take the first spot. The Saguaro Shoes Dash have sold out multiple times, so I’m just hoping they restock. Saguaro Shoes is an affordable barefoot shoe brand, and with my code KELLY15, you can grab these for about $50. The Dash sneakers feature mesh and microfiber uppers on some, with canvas and microfiber on others. They come in several bright and bold colorways. The soles are flat and flexible, and I find them true to size (that’s an EU38 for me).

Xero Shoes Wynn Sneakers

Nylon and Suede Uppers | Prices start at $181 | Shop Xero Shoes

Xero Shoes Wynn, Trendy barefoot sneakers in 2025

These are easily one of my favorite pairs of Xero Shoes ever. Personally, I think they’re one of their best designs—and as someone who spent a few years wearing the New Balance 574s, these feel like the perfect barefoot-friendly throwback.

They’ve got that same retro runner vibe with a casual, wear-everywhere look, but with all the barefoot features we love: zero drop, flexible sole, and a roomy toe box. The nylon and suede uppers feel durable yet lightweight, and they strike that rare balance between sporty and stylish. I love the white and grey color way with maroon accents, but they have darker versions too. If you’re looking for a barefoot sneaker that nails the classic athletic aesthetic, the Wynn is it. I’m wearing a size US7.5, which is my usually size for Xero.

Dolphie Paradise Supersonice NFS

Leather and Suede | €195 | Code KELLYDP10 for 10% off | Shop Dolphie

Dolfie Paradise barefoot shoes

Dolphie Paradise might be new to barefoot shoes, but they’re definitely not new to designing cool, classic sneakers. After years as a conventional shoe brand, they made a full transition—completely redesigning their styles to feature wide toe boxes, zero-drop construction, and flexible soles.

What I love most is that they’ve kept their own unique design point of view, though if you’re trying to get that New Balance chunky sneaker look, I think these fit the bill! They bring serious style cred and experience to the barefoot world, and it shows.

These come with two sets of insoles: 8mm and 3mm. The 8mm is a lot of cushion, and makes the shoes better-suited to those with low volume feet. I wear these in an EU38 with the 3mm insole.

Brambas Calabria 165

Vegan leather uppers | €140 | Code KELLY for 10% off | Shop Brambas

Brambas Calabria are retro vegan leather barefoot sneakers

Spain seems to be the birthplace of cool, retro barefoot sneakers at the moment— and Brambas is one of the newest options. Brambas launched on Kickstarter earlier this year with their Calabria 165 sneaker, made with corn leather uppers and soft bamboo lining. I opted for my usual size, an EU38, and they feel like the perfect fit.

Blusun 200

Nubuck and Suede leather uppers | €140 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off | Shop Blusun

barefoot features of BLUSUN barefoot shoes

The Adidas Samba felt like *the* sneaker of 2024, and it looks like they’ll still be one of most popular options throughout 2024–especially in bright, bold colors. Blusun is fully on board with that trend, with colors like hot pinks, brilliant blues, and this beautiful green. But don’t worry, if you’re into neutrals, they have that too. The Blusun brand may be new in 2024, but it was launched by a pair of barefoot shoe industry veterans. All of the shoes feel incredibly well-made, and have super flexible soles. These sneakers fit narrower, lower volume feet best. I opted for an EU37. They fit well length-wise, but as they have a narrower fit, I might’ve been better off opting for a size up for more width and volume.

Check out more barefoot alternatives to the Adidas Samba here.

Groundies Universe

Leather uppers | $130 | Shop Groundies US

Groundies Universe barefoot sneakers are classic sneakers

A simple leather sneaker is always in style, and these Groundies Universe have subtle details that are reminiscent of the Adidas Stan Smith shoes. I wear these in an EU38.

Groundies now has separate websites for the US and all other international orders, so make sure you’re on the correct one when ordering.

Dolfie Paradise Dylan NS

Canvas or Suede | €195 | Code KELLYDP10 for 10% off | Shop Dolphie

Dolfie Paradise new barefoot shoe line, skater shoes with a wide toe box and embroidered uppers

I could honestly put all of Dolfie’s new barefoot line in this post as I personally think they’re one of the coolest new additions to barefoot shoes in 2025. But the Dylan deserves a special shout out as something totally unique, with its skater vibe and embroidered uppers. The Dylan style also comes in tan or black suede or another canvas option with tie dye. I wear all the Dolfie shoes I’ve tried in an EU38, including the Dylan.

Saguaro’s waterproof barefoot boots use vegan microfiber uppers and fleece lining to create an affordable and warm winter boot. They’re available in both kids and adult sizes. The Rise boot uses Saguaro’s hiking sole, which I find more tapered than the other styles. Read a more detailed Saguaro Shoes review here.

Be Lenka Winter Boots

Be Lenka Winter or Arctic Edge | Leather or Vegan | $179 – $199 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

The Be Lenka Winter boots are a classic lace up boots with leather uppers, wool lining and insole, and waterproof membrane. Because of the thicker lining, you may need to size up. The Arctic Edge look more like winter sneakers, with a nylon upper, but still fully waterproof. I wear both in an EU39.

Barebarics Urban Edge Waterproof barefoot shoes

Barebarics UrbanEdge | $179 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

The UrbanEdge waterproof shoes are made with leather uppers and a waterproof membrane. The Primaloft insulation offers a lot of warmth. These have a thicker, chunkier-looking sole; they have good flexibility, but you notice the additional weight and lack of ground feel compared to more minimal barefoot shoes.

Barefoot Snow Boots

These barefoot boots are specifically designed to give you traction on snow and ice, and extra warmth for freezing conditions.

BeLenka Snowfox barefoot snow boots

Be Lenka Snowfox | $219 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

The Snowfox packs a lot of warmth (and some glam) into a lightweight snow boot. Leather and Textile uppers along with a water-resistant membrane and fluffy merino wool lining. These are slip-on, but the exterior laces allow you to adjust and tighten.

Xero Shoes Alpine Snow Boots

Xero Shoes Alpine | $160 | Vegan

The Alpine is a lightweight snow boot with fully sealed seams and waterproof vegan upper. The inside is lined with polyester fleece for extra warmth.

Koel Rana are wide toe, wool-lined boots for Rain and snow

Koel Rana | $145-$198 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off at PedTerra

The Koel Rana have a waterproof textile upper that cinches at the top. They’ve withstood plenty of puddle jumping and wading in streams. The Rana come in a fully lined wool version, so they work well for both rain and snow.

Excursion barefoot snow boots, Vivobarefoot Tundra Esc

Vivobarefoot Tundra Esc | $500 | Code KELLY25 for 25% off

Vivobarefoot is known for its outdoor performance footwear, and these Tundra Esc have been built for deep cold exploration. Because they’re meant for temperatures below where water and sweat freeze, they opted for insulated but permeable layers, so moisture won’t stay trapped in the boot. They’re constructed as two separate boots, with an outer layer, and a wool felt inner boot. The Michelin sole has excellent grip on snow and ice.

Manitoba Mukluks minimalist warm winter boots

Manitobah Mukluks | $180

Manitobah makes authentic, Indigenous-designed products in Canada, including mukluks built to withstand the freezing winters in the north. The Tamarack is waterproof and rated down to -25F with a sheepskin shearling lining. With regard to barefoot features, some boots have a narrower toe box than others. Most are zero-drop with a Vibram sole.

Steger Arctic Mukluks

Steger Arctic Mukluks | $250

Steger touts their mukluks as the warmest boots in the world. The Arctic style has a more rugged tread and rated down to -40F. Use snow-proof water-repellant spray on the leather portion of these boots to make them waterproof. They do have a heel-to-toe drop of several millimeters.

Barefoot Rain Boots

For more details reviews of these adult barefoot rainboots, check out this post. And for a list of rain boots for kids, see here.

Saguaro Shoes barefoot rubber rain boots with tall shaft

Saguaro Brisk Rubber Rain Boots | $51 – $60 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

True barefoot rubber rainboot with flexible sole and shaft. The rubber shaft is very thin and flexible. These barefoot rain boots come in a lined and unlined version.

Xero Shoes Gracie barefoot rain boot for women

Xero Shoes Gracie Rubber Rain Boot | $80

Short rubber boot with a slip-on style. They can take some effort to get on as the elastic insert at the ankle isn’t super stretchy, but that also helps them stay on better. The fit is comparable to other Xero Shoes, which I find runs a little narrow in the toe box. Available in women’s sizes US5-12.

Asgard packable rain boot on Amazon

Asgard Tall Packable Rain Boot on Amazon | $44

These are more of a compromise option due to a more tapered toe, but they are zero-drop, lightweight, flexible, and very affordable.

Koel Rana are wide toe, wool-lined boots for Rain and snow

Koel Rana | $145-$198 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off at PedTerra

This is listed in both the rain and snow boot section, because it makes an excellent option for both thanks to the waterproof upper and cinched top. There is an unlined version for milder weather, and a lined one for colder weather.

Best Option for Ice

When it comes to icy conditions, even the best waterproof barefoot boots have their limits. While soft, sticky rubber soles provide better traction than harder materials and deeper lugs can offer some grip, no boot can guarantee safety on all types of ice. There are two good options that can make any barefoot boot ready for the ice.

The first is crampons like Yaktrax that fit over your boots. Yaktrax are lightweight cleats with metal coils that easily slip over your boots, making them perfect for icy sidewalks and trails. For more extreme conditions, crampons with metal spikes offer unmatched grip on steep, icy surfaces. Most options are pretty affordable, with many available for around $20.

The next option is to insert your own metal spikes into the rubber sole itself. If you live in a location where it is always ice, this could a more convenient solution.

I haven’t tried this, but a reader from Finland shared his recommendation. He used these spikes (BestGrip number 2407.0-SP on this website), and screwed them into his Vivobarefoot Tracker Forest ESC. Technically they look like they’re made for

These particular ones worked with these Vivobarefoot boots as the spikes weren’t as thick as the rubber sole + lug, which means they didn’t full penetrate through the sole. Here, the ESC sole is a 2.5mm base and 7.5mm lugs, so 9.5mm total. The spikes are 8.5mm long, with an installation depth of 6.2mm and a protruding spike of 2.3mm. The spike you need will vary based on what shoe you’re going to use it with–just make sure that the spike isn’t longer than the sole depth.

He also noted that he has removed the spikes, and they haven’t damaged the soles.

How We Tested the Waterproofness of Each Boot

We looked for boots that truly live up to their waterproof claim, often by not just wearing them out in the rain, but by taking them out on a hike and venturing through small streams and shallow rivers.

While some boots with water-resistant materials hold up to splashes on top of the shoe, we really wanted to make sure the seams were fully sealed, and the gusseted tongue was doing its job. This meant keeping the boot submerged for at least a few minutes to ensure that no water crept into the shoe.

How to Keep Your Barefoot Boots Waterproof

Use otter wax to waterproof barefoot leather boots

Even the best waterproof barefoot boots need a little maintenance to stay effective through the winter. Regular care can help your boots repel water, resist stains, and last longer. Here are some practical tips to keep your barefoot boots in top condition:

1. Apply a Waterproofing Spray or Wax

Most waterproof barefoot boots benefit from an occasional reapplication of a waterproofing treatment. Check the material of your boots and choose a product designed for that material:

  • Leather Boots: Use a leather waterproofing wax or cream to maintain both water resistance and suppleness. Beeswax-based treatments are a great option.
  • Suede or Fabric Boots: Opt for a spray designed for suede, nubuck, or textile materials. Apply evenly and let the boots dry for 24 hours for maximum protection.

Reapply these treatments every 1–2 months or after heavy use in wet conditions.

2. Clean Your Boots Regularly

Dirt, mud, and salt from winter roads can degrade waterproof coatings and damage materials over time.

  • Steps to Clean:
    1. Wipe off loose dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth.
    2. For tougher stains, use a gentle cleaning solution designed for your boot material.
    3. Let the boots air dry away from direct heat, which can crack leather or damage adhesives.

Clean boots also make it easier for waterproofing treatments to stick and work effectively.

3. Use a Boot Dryer

If your boots get wet, dry them as soon as possible to prevent moisture from seeping into the materials. A boot dryer is a great tool for quickly and gently removing moisture without damaging the structure of your boots. Avoid placing them near direct heat sources like radiators, as this can warp or shrink materials.

4. Protect the Seams

Seams are often the weakest point in waterproof footwear. Check the seams regularly for wear and consider using seam sealant if you notice any leaks. This simple step can extend the waterproof life of your boots significantly.

5. Store Boots Properly

When not in use, store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or moisture. Use boot trees or stuff them with newspaper to help maintain their shape.

6. Reassess Waterproofness Annually

Before the start of each winter season, test your boots by running water over them or stepping into a shallow puddle. If you notice any leaks, it’s time to clean, reapply waterproof treatments, and inspect the seams.

By following these steps, you can keep your waterproof barefoot boots performing at their best throughout the winter. A little care goes a long way in ensuring your boots stay warm, dry, and ready for every adventure!

Final Thoughts on Waterproof Barefoot Boots for Winter

Winter doesn’t mean giving up on barefoot shoes. With the right pair, you can stay warm, dry, and connected to the ground even in the harshest conditions. Whether you need something for heavy snow, wet slush, or frigid cold, there’s a barefoot winter boot to keep you moving comfortably.

Ditch the bulky wellies and give these comfortable barefoot rain boots a try. These lightweight waterproof boots feature a wide toe box and a flat and flexible sole.

When the rainy season hit, it used to mean pulling out my heavy, heeled, and narrow rubber rain boots. Traditional rain boots, while effective at keeping your feet dry, often come with bulky designs, rigid soles, and a lack of flexibility that can negatively affect your foot health. This is where barefoot rain boots come in, offering a more natural, comfortable alternative. With minimalist designs that mimic the shape and movement of your feet, barefoot rain boots give you the waterproof protection you need without sacrificing comfort or agility.

In this post, we’ll explore the best options for barefoot rain boots, starting with your classic rubber rain boots. I’ve also included a whole list of other waterproof options, so you can pick the boots that best fit your lifestyle.

Looking for kid’s sizes? Check out this post for the best barefoot rain boots for kids.

Best Barefoot rain boots

Barefoot Rubber Rain Boots

These barefoot rubber rain boots check all the boxes, including an anatomically shaped toe box, and a thin, flat and flexible sole. They’re a minimalist version of your classic wellies.

Wildling Ranidae Rubber Rain Boots

Wildling Ranidae barefoot rubber rain boots

The Wildling Ranidae is the barefoot rain boot we’ve all been waiting for—lightweight, flexible, and actually fun to wear. Unlike stiff, clunky rubber boots, Ranidae moves with you, letting your feet bend and flex naturally while keeping water out. These rubber rain boots have the ultimate barefoot feel we’ve come to expect from Wildling shoes.

The deep-tread sole gives extra grip on slick surfaces, whether you’re splashing through puddles, wandering muddy trails, or just tackling a rainy day in the city. It comes in toddler through adult sizes, with plenty of toe space for a natural fit that doesn’t feel bulky. They’re available in orange or yellow for kids, and orange or forest green for adults. Made in Italy from vegan, water-repellent SEBS material, the Ranidae is a fresh take on rain boots—because wet weather shouldn’t mean compromising on foot freedom.

Fit and sizing: Designed for year-round wear, the Rainidae boots have room for warm socks in winter but still breathes in warmer weather. I opted for the EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot length, which is my usually size in Wildling shoes. They are a great fit length wise, but a bit roomy in the heel (I have a narrower heel). With thin socks, I’ll probably need to add a heel grip for a more secure fit. However, paired with the new Wildling Calora thicker knit wool socks, they’re a perfect fit. My 3-year-old also got the boots in the same size as the Wildling shoes he’s been wearing all winter, and they’re also a great fit with the wool socks. Hopefully that means he’ll have a little space to grow and continue to wear them through spring and summer with thinner socks.

Saguaro Brisk Barefoot Rain Boots

Saguaro Shoes barefoot rubber rain boots with tall shaft

These tick all the boxes for a solid barefoot rain boot, including a wide toe box, and a flat and flexible sole. They’re fully waterproof with a taller shaft cinches at the top. The rubber shaft is flexible and pretty thin—if you get the unlined version, it’s a little floppy. But if you get the lined version, it’s warmer and has more structure. They recently updated the sole for more tread.

Use code KELLY15 for 15% off at Saguaro Shoes. This makes the unlined version $51, and the lined version $60.

Xero Shoes Gracie Short Rubber Rain Boot

Xero Shoes Gracie barefoot rubber rain boots

This short rubber rain boot is a cute slip-on style. They can take some effort to get on as the elastic insert at the ankle isn’t super stretchy, but that also helps them stay on better.

The Gracie rain boot is currently only available in women’s sizes, from women’s US 5 – 12. I wear a women’s US 7 based on my 23.3 cm foot measurement. The fit is comparable to other Xero Shoes, which I find runs a little narrow in the toe box. These barefoot rain boots are $80 and come in four colors.

Textile Waterproof Barefoot

Koel Rana

These feature a waterproof textile upper that cinches at the top. They’ve withstood plenty of puddle jumping and wading in streams. The also come in a fully lined wool version, so they work well for both rain and cold weather. Available in sizes EU24- 41 at PedTerra in the US. Use code KELLY for 10% off.

Leather Waterproof Barefoot Boots for Rain

These aren’t your classic wellies, but all of these leather barefoot boots are fully waterproof with an integrated membrane. Some waterproofing is better than others, so I’ve only included the ones that I’ve found reliable to keep my feet dry. Leather does need more maintenance to keep it waterproof and help it last. I recommend regularly using a waterproofing wax, which both protects and conditions the leather.

Lems Chelsea Boots | Minimalist Chelsea Boots with wide toe box
  • Lems Waterproof Chelsea Boots: These aren’t rubber rain boots, but they are pull-on and waterproof thanks to the oiled leather and separate membrane . I like to think of these as a great barefoot replacement for Blundstone boots.
  • Lems Boulder Boots: There are several different waterproof options when it comes to the Boulder Boot. We’ve like both the Boulder Boot Grip and Summit for a more rugged hiking boot with moderate cushion. I’ll also use these for work in the yard as the extra cushion is helpful when using a shovel.
  • BeLenka Winter and Ranger Boots: BeLenka has an extensive range of barefoot boots, and I’ve found the Winter and Ranger boots to work best for wet weather. They both have treated leather and a separate water-resistant membrane. Use code KELLY5 for 5% off at BeLenka.
  • Feelgrounds Patrol Boots: This Vegan option uses a waterproof membrane and a gusseted tongue to make them fully waterproof barefoot boots.
  • Vivobarefoot Tracker boots: The Tracker FG has been Vivo’s main waterproof barefoot boot, and previously included a waterproof membrane. Known for their innovation and sustainability, the newest version of the trackers are touted to still be waterproof, though they did remove the membrane. These are another rugged barefoot hiking boot that is meant to get you through any type of weather. Use code BSG20 for 20% off at Vivobarefoot.

A good work boot should protecting your feet, not killing your feet. These wide toe box work boots range from safety boots with a steel toe to the most barefoot, flexible soles.

When it comes to work boots, comfort and safety are often at odds. Many traditional work boots feature narrow toe boxes and elevated heels, leading to cramped toes, bad posture, and discomfort after long hours on your feet. But, minimalist work boots with wide toe boxes and zero-drop soles are changing the game. These boots allow your feet to spread naturally while offering the protection and durability needed for tough jobs.

If you’re looking for work boots that combine comfort, safety, and the benefits of minimalist design, here’s a roundup of the best wide toe box, zero-drop work boots. This post includes fit and sizing tips along with discount codes to help you get the best deal.

Steel Toe Wide Toe Box Boots and barefoot work boots

Sizing reference

For most of these shoes, I’ll provide a sizing reference based on my experience with the fit. Read more on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I’m most often a US7.5/EU38 in my barefoot shoes, but sometimes size up in barefoot boots to accommodate for thicker socks. My feet are medium width and measure 23.3cm long. I typically look for shoes with an extra 1.2cm of space.

My husband Aaron also tested out some of these boots. His feet measure 26.8cm and he is most often a US10.5/EU43.

Steel Toe Works Boots with a Wide Toe Box

Carets Determination Steel Toe Boots

$250 | Sizes Men’s US7/EU39 – US12/EU45 | Nubuck Leather | Steel Toe | 19 mm stack height | Resoleable

Best for: Jobs requiring steel-toe protection without sacrificing foot health.

Carets Wide Toe Box Steel Toe Work Boots

Carets steel toe boots blend the safety features of a traditional work boot with the comfort of a minimalist design. This newly released boot was designed as a full safety boot and made to be used in an indoor or factory setting, though some people have been putting them to the test in more outdoor conditions, and still been happy with the results.

The tech specs of the boots were tested by a third party. You can review the results of their testing and the third-party certifications on the Carets website.

Tech specs of the Carets Steel Toe Boots:

  • Sole is slip resistant, plus oil and chemical resistant
  • Puncture resistant in the sole and toe cap
  • Impact, compression and electrical hazard

They are very wide and roomy in the toe box, which allows your toes to spread out naturally. They also run wide through the heel, so if you have narrower ankles, you may need to add heel pads to adjust the fit.

The zero-drop sole ensures that your feet stay in a neutral position, promoting better posture and reducing foot fatigue.

They are heavier than a typical barefoot boot due to the steel toe, but the soles aren’t super thick and heavy. The boots have a 19mm stack height. The Carets Determination Steel Toe Boots provide both protection and comfort for those working in environments that demand safety footwear.

The boots use a Goodyear Storm Welt, which means they are resoleable.

Sizing: I have these in the smallest size, the Men’s US6/EU39. For my 23.3cm foot length, the EU38 (men’s US7) would likely be a better fit. The boots can accomodate higher volume feet. Low to mid volume would have room to add an extra insole for additional cushion.

Gaucho Ninja Carpenter’s Safety Boots

$265 on sale | Sizes EU37 – US12/EU48 | Leather | Steel Toe or Composite | Standard Wide or Extra Wide fits | Customizable | Goodyear welted and resoleable  | Code KELLY10 for 10% off |

Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Gaucho Ninja boots are handcrafted, minimalist work boots that focus on comfort, durability, and natural foot movement. They use premium materials and durable construction methods, including the Goodyear welt method which makes these boots resoleable.

Tech specs of the Birkenstock Gaucho Ninja Carpenter’s Safety Boots:

  • Steel toe caps (200J) EN ISO 12568:2010
  • Anti-puncture insole material (1200N) ASTM F2413-2018
  • Soles made in Germany EN ISO 20344/20345 with anti-slip, fuel and oil proof, and anti-static properties

If you’re looking for boots that offer customization, Gaucho Ninja offers a made-to-order option, which also includes selecting from a standard wide or extra wide fit. Their flat soles are one of the thinner and more flexible options on this list, but still offer a high degree of protection.

The higher quality, longevity, and craftsmanship is reflected in the higher price tag for these wide toe box safety boots. These are currently on sale for $265 in October 2024, which is an incredible deal.

Sizing: Custom sizing for these boots starts with a foot scan. If you opt for the standard boots, I wear an EU38 in Gaucho Ninja boots.

Birkenstock QS700 Steel Toe Safety Boots

$150+ | Sizes EU35 – EU48 | Leather or Vegan Microfiber | Steel Toe

Birkenstocks are known for their wide toe box, but also feature a signature cork footbed that is very structured and stiff. The QS700 safety boots come closer to a minimalist option once you remove the cork footbed.

Once the insole is removed, these are one of the most comfortable steel toe work boots currently available. The sole is flat, and it’s reasonably light and flexible while still offering the necessary features of a safety shoe.

Tech specs of the Birkenstock QS700:

  • 200 joule steel toe cap with a scratch-resistant cap guard protects the forefoot
  • Outsole is nonslip, metal-free, and oil- and petrol-resistant. Provides for energy absorption around the heel and is penetration-resistant.
  • Shoe is certified in accordance with EN ISO 20345:2011
  • Meets the requirements of protection category S3

For those wanting a vegan wide toe box work boot, the Birkenstock QS700 comes in a microfiber upper in addition to a leather upper.

These are a solid option, but people generally don’t find them as durable as the first two on the list (which reasons that with a higher price, you are getting better quality).

There are several places to order the Birkenstock safety shoes. The ZaMi website, a Spanish minimalist shoe retailer, ships internationally. Once you’re on the ZaMi website, search “Birkenstock” and the options will pop up. Shipping is 30 € to the US.  The Heel is another retailer that carries both the QS700 and the low top QS500.

If you’re in the UK, you can purchase directly from Birkenstock. They’re also available on the German Amazon website, which will deliver to most EU countries. I also see used ones pop up websites like eBay and Poshmark.

Minimalist and Barefoot Work Boots

This next set of wide toe box work boots don’t have as many technical specs, but they’ll still keep your feet protected and comofrotable. They start on the more minimalist end with thicker soles, and move down to the most barefoot options with thinner and more flexible soles.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots

$200 | Sizes Men’s US7 – US14 | Leather

Best for: Outdoor and rugged environments where durability is key.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots

Jim Green has been making boots designed for Rangers in Africa for over three decades, but this is the brand’s first foray into a more minimalist design. They took their well-loved boots and created a new sole that was zero-drop and more flexible. It allows for natural foot movement while providing a rugged and tough exterior.

Jim Green was already known for having a wider toe box than most, but the Barefoot Ranger boots are even wider with less of a taper. I say less, because these still do have a slight taper. If you want a truly anatomical shape for your boot, you may find these too narrow. However, the compromise may be worth it for some that need the durability this boot provides.

Overall, I wouldn’t fully classify these as true a “barefoot” boot due to the thicker sole and slight taper at the toes, but they still offer the freedom of movement and ground feedback you’d expect from minimalist footwear.

The Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger boots are available on Amazon in the US, with free shipping and free returns.

For barefoot work boots with a taller shaft, the Jim Green Barefoot Trooper Boots have an 8-inch shaft for more protection.

Sizing: This is another one where the smallest size available was a Men’s 7/EU39. They were a little loose, though the larger size did mean I had more room in the toe box. An EU38 would be the best fit for length, making them true to size.

Lems Boulder Boot Grip or Summit

$185-$195 | Sizes Women’s US6 – Men’s US15 | Leather or Nylon | Waterproof | Slip-Resistant Outsole | 16.5mm stack height

Best for: Those needing a lightweight yet rugged option with some cushion for less extreme work environments.

Lems Boulder Summit Boots are minimalist hiking boots with a rugged tread

The Lems Boulder Boot is a favorite in the minimalist footwear community for good reason. With a flexible, zero-drop sole and wide toe box, it allows your foot to move naturally while still providing enough grip and durability for work settings. These boots are lightweight, making them a great choice for anyone who wants to maintain foot health without feeling weighed down by heavy boots. They also have a moderate amount of cushion, which can made long days on hard flooring more comfortable.

These barefoot work boots come in a few different sole and upper combinations. Both the Grip and Summit come in leather waterproof uppers. The Boulder Summit has a rugged, zig-zag pattern made for better grip on uneven terrain. The Boulder Grip features a slip-Resistant rubber outsole.

The Boulder Boot Summit is another option for those wanting a vegan minimalist work boot. In addition to the waterproof leather uppers pictured here, it also comes in waterproof vegan nylon uppers.

Sizing: With the Boulder Boot Grip Waterproof, I opted for a size US Women’s 8. This is 1/2 size up from my usual size to accommodate for thicker socks and consider the space taken up by the waterproof membrane.. Aaron is wearing the Boulder Summit in Men’s US11.

Gaucho Ninja Chukka Boots

$416 | Sizes EU37 – EU48 | Leather | Standard Wide or Extra Wide fits | Customizable | Goodyear welted and resoleable | KELLY10 for 10% off

Best for: Handmade, high-quality option for those who value craftsmanship and minimalist design.

Code KELLY10 for 10% off

The Gaucho Ninja Chukka boots feature the same level of craftsmanship and high-quality materials as their steel toe boots included on the list above. These Chukka boots are similar in the design, but with out the reinforced steel toe.

Similarly, they can be customized using a wide or extra wide last, and the Goodyear welted designed means they can be resoled. Combined with the premium uppers, these boots are designed to last many years. If you’re looking for something that combines craftsmanship with minimalist principles, Gaucho Ninja boots are a top contender.

Sizing: I started my ordering process with Gaucho Ninja using their foot scanner, but they also have a detailed size chart for both their wide and extra wide widths. I’m wearing an EU38.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Boots

$240 | Sizes Women’s US4.5/EU35 – US15/EU49 | Leather | Waterproof | Code BSG20 for 20% off

Best for: Those preferring a true barefoot feel

Vivobarefoot Tracker FGs as leather barefoot work boots

Code BSG20 for 20% off

Vivobarefoot’s Tracker Boots are an excellent option for those seeking a true barefoot work boot with a wide toe box. Though designed more for outdoor trekking, their durability and sturdy build make them ideal for work environments. The zero-drop design keeps your foot in a natural position, while the wide toe box ensures your toes aren’t cramped after hours of wear. These boots are also waterproof, making them perfect for wet conditions.

Since these are the thinnest sole and they’re designed specifically for the outdoors, you can see a higher rate of wear on harder surfaces like concrete.

Vivobarefoot Trackers are now available in several different sole and upper options. The newest Tracker at Moc style features deeper 4mm lugs and a moc toe design.

Sizing: For more Vivobarefoot boots, including the Tracker, I find that they fit true to size. For me, that’s an EU38 and for Aaron that’s an EU43.

Best Wide Toe Box Work Boots

Why Choose Minimalist, Wide Toe Box Work Boots?

Traditional work boots often sacrifice comfort for safety, with narrow toe boxes that force your toes into an unnatural position and elevated heels that can strain your posture. Minimalist boots, on the other hand, are designed to allow your feet to function as they were meant to. Here’s why choosing wide toe box, zero-drop work boots is a smart choice:

Improved Foot Health: A wide toe box allows your toes to spread naturally, reducing the risk of bunions, hammertoes, and other foot deformities.

Better Posture: A zero-drop sole keeps your feet in a neutral position, promoting better posture and reducing strain on your knees, hips, and back.

Increased Comfort: With natural foot movement, these boots reduce the discomfort and fatigue that often come with long hours on your feet.

Durability with Flexibility: Minimalist work boots offer the same durability as traditional work boots but with the added benefit of flexibility, which enhances your overall movement.

Community Feedback: What the people would still like to see

The list of the above boots is a great start, but there are still some gaps. If any of the brands are reading this post, here are some things you might consider:

  • Composite Toe
  • Extending the size range to smaller sizes (some of the brands are geared towards men and stop around Men’s US7/EU39)
  • Slip-on/Chelsea Boots (some environments require boots with no laces)

Final Thoughts

If you’re tired of sacrificing comfort for protection in your work boots, it’s time to switch to a pair that supports your feet and your job. The wide toe box, zero-drop work boots listed here offer the perfect balance between safety, durability, and comfort. Whether you’re on a construction site, working outdoors, or simply looking for a more foot-friendly option, these brands have you covered.

Let your feet breathe, spread, and move naturally—without compromising on safety. Try out one of these minimalist work boots and experience the difference for yourself.

Have any experience with wide toe box or barefoot work boots? Share what has worked best for your, or if you have any brands you think should be added to the list.

Find affordable barefoot and minimalist shoes, along with toe socks and other foot health gear on Amazon with free shipping and free returns.

If you’re just starting your journey of foot health and barefoot shoes, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start and which shoes to buy. And if you’ve been holding out because you don’t want to spend a fortune on expensive shoes and high shipping and return costs, then Amazon is a great place to start.

Several barefoot shoe brands also sell on Amazon (like Vivobarefoot and Xero Shoes), and there are a number of affordable brands that are exclusive to Amazon.

You can find all of the barefoot shoes, socks and foot health gear I recommend on My Amazon Storefront.

Amazon Prime Day Deals for Barefoot Shoes

July 8 – 11, 2025 | Amazon Prime Day just starting!

I’ve combed through all the Amazon Prime Day deals on barefoot shoes, socks, and foot health gear—so you don’t have to! You’ll find everything I spotted in this curated list. While most of the discounts aren’t groundbreaking (pretty similar to last year), many styles from popular Amazon brands like WHITIN, Hobibear, and WateLves are $5–$10 off per pair, and the savings can still add up if you’re stocking up. I did find several surprises, like a few Xero Shoes for $50, Flux runners for under $100, and a few dollars off per pair of my favorite toe socks. Don’t forget to check out accessories too, like toe spacers and massage balls.

Barefoot Shoe Brands on Amazon

Here is a quick list of barefoot shoes available on Amazon in my storefront. The first two are only available on Amazon, while the others are also available on their own respective websites.

WHITIN Shoes

WHITIN Shoes on Amazon, Barefoot Shoes For Beginners

WHITIN is the main brand I’d recommend on Amazon. They make very affordable minimalist shoes, with most styles around $40. They’ve greatly expanded their selection over the last few years, so it’s fairly easy to find a simple, but versatile casual shoe. They’re not an Amazon-owned brand, but currently seem to only sell on this platform.

I include WHITIN shoes in my blog post on the best barefoot shoes for beginners as most of their styles have a wide, foot-shaped toe box, the sole is flat and reasonably flexible, and they do have some moderate cushion. A little bit of cushion can help someone that is new to the concept of barefoot shoes through the transition as their body adjusts to less support and padding in their shoes.

Quick Tip for Ordering Whitin Shoes

WHITIN makes both barefoot and traditional shoes. It has the same style of shoe in both a barefoot and a traditional version, and sometimes it still lists terms like “wide” and “wide toe box” in the narrower traditional version (super confusing, I know).

The best way to differentiate is to make sure that the shoes have “wide” in the sizing, as shown in the screenshot below (i.e., the size is “8 wide” NOT just 8).

All of the casual barefoot WHITIN shoes with an anatomical toe box are listed on the “Wide Barefoot” Tab on WHITIN’s Amazon storefront. The Trail Runners can be found on the “Barefoot” tab.

Find a full review of WHITIN minimalist shoes here.

Hobibear

Hobibear is another brand that sells on Amazon. They look very similar to WHITIN, so this may be the case of two companies using the same supplier/manufacturer, and just changing small details on the shoes (like color, branded tag, etc). The main style is the barefoot casual fashion sneaker. They also have a lot of non-barefoot shoes. Find the Hobibear barefoot shoes on Amazon here. Whitin and Hobibear have a very similar price point (around $40), so it mostly comes down to which of the small details or colors you prefer. You can purchase both Hobibear and Whitin from Amazon, so that makes both shipping and returns free and easy.

Shoes that look the Same (with different brand names)

I’ve seen more and more of this lately–what looks like the same exact shoe, but sold by several different brand names. This especially seems to be the case for the trail runner/water shoe style of barefoot shoes. My guess is that a certain factory has made a prototype, and many different companies are purchasing the same shoe and simply adding their own brand name to the product. The funny thing is, there is a large variability in price.

For example, in the screenshot below, the white and pink sneakers look exactly the same, but they’re being sole by three different brands at three different prices. I think some of these companies are trying to establish a “brand name” and are using that as a reason to hike the price up. For these types of shoes, you really shouldn’t be spending more than $30 to $40.
