Looking for barefoot Ugg boot alternatives? These cozy, foot-friendly boots offer the same warmth and comfort as classic Uggs—without the narrow toe box, thick sole, or heel drop.

Ugg boots are the classic cozy sheepskin boots that originated in Australia and later became a household brand name in the United States. They’re known for their warmth and comfort, but traditional Uggs still have many of the same drawbacks as conventional footwear, including a tapered toe box, a thick and stiff sole, and a noticeable heel drop.

If you’re looking for a barefoot Ugg boot alternative that offers the same cozy feel without compromising foot health, here are my favorite slip-on styles with warm linings.

Best Barefoot Boot Replacements for Uggs

Softstar S’more Slippers and Phoenix Boots

Women’s 5.5 – Men’s 11.5 | Leather and sheepskin | $155 – $275 | Made in USA

For the most luxurious barefoot sheepskin boot or slipper, Softstar has several great options. The Phoenix boot is a mix of leather and suede uppers and fully lined with plush sheepskin. They’re most comparable to the Ugg Classic Short, with an 8-inch shaft that fully covers the ankles. You can simply slip them on, or use the side zipper for easier on and off. These boots use the 4mm Vibram Tundra sole, plus a 3mm midsole for some cushion. All of Softstar’s shoes are handmade in their Oregon workshop.

If you prefer something closer to the Ugg Classic Ultra Mini that hits around  the ankles, check out the new S’mores Slippers. They now feature a Vibram sole, so you can comfortably wear them both indoors and outdoors. These have been my favorite slippers over the last few years, and the new sole just means I’ll be able to wear them even more. Wear the cuff up to cover the ankles, or roll them down for a cute fuzzy collar.

Fit and sizing: These slippers use Softstar’s unique sizing, so be sure to measure your feet and reference the size chart. I’m wearing a 5U regular for my 23.3cm feet as these stretch a little bit with wear. The regular already has a roomy fit, but they also come in wide for those with extra wide feet.

Wildling Koselig Boots

EU23 – 47 | Wool | $169 | Free Shipping Code: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Koselig boots are wool barefoot boots with a fluffy wool lining

The new Koselig is the coziest boot (the name literally means cosy in Norwegian). While they’re not sheepskin, the extra fluffy wool lining and wool uppers are no less warm. True to Wildling’s DNA, these boots are ultra minimalist—super lightweight and incredibly flexible. I’m not sure if it’s all of the wool or if it’s a middle layer, but they make a light “shooshing” noise when I walk (that’s the best way I can think to describe it). It’s not a big deal as most shoes make some kind of noise, but these were a little more noticeable than other lined boots.

You can use code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE for free shipping. Wildling is currently covering the tariffs for US orders.

Fit and sizing: I usually wear an EU38 in Wildling and still wear an EU38 in these as they sized up the boots to account for lining and thick socks (You can see the Koselig compared to another Wildling wool shoe in EU38). They fit my higher instep, but feel a little tighter over the top than the others. I’d say these are best suited for low and medium volume feet.

Wildling Koselig in EU38 compared to a regular wildling barefoot boot in the same size

Zeazoo Dingo Boots

EU23 – 42 | Sheepskin | Shipped from USA with PedTerra | $135 | Code KELLY for 10% off

The Zeazoo Dingo boots are close in style to a classic Ugg boot with brown suede and sheepskin lining. They come in toddler through adult sizes, and feature a flexible 6mm Vibram sole.

If you’re in the US, you can order directly from PedTerra with free shipping and free returns. Use code KELLY for 10% off.

Groundies Cozy Boot 2.0

EU36 – 43 | Suede and wool lining | €135 | Shipped from EU

This is another barefoot boot that captures the style of the Ugg boot well. The Groundies Cozy Boot is the perfect low slip-on barefoot bootie, and comes in four different suede colors. The sides fully lined with sheep wool. The insole isn’t quite as fluffy, so I personally added a wool insole to add a bit more cushion and warmth and adjust the volume.

Groundies has two websites (one for the US and one for all other orders), but the Cozy boots are currently only available on the International website.

Fit and sizing: Like most of Groundies’ regular barefoot fit styles, these work best for narrow to medium-width feet. I went with an EU 39, which is one size up from my usual Groundies sneaker size. They have a higher volume overall, so adding the extra insole helped fine-tune the fit—both in volume and length—for a more secure feel. Without the insole, this size feels a bit long and loose on me. Personally, I prefer sizing up and then adjusting as needed, since it gives me a bit more width and flexibility when wearing thicker socks.

Groundies Iceland Boot

EU36 – 43 | Suede and wool lining | $140 | Shipped from US or EU

These have a few extra details beyond a basic suede boot, including a stretchy knit collar and a side zipper. Like the Cozy Boots, they feature a full wool lining along the sides and a thinner lining underfoot. The boots use Groundies’ TrueSense® GO1 sole with a 6.3 mm stack height, which I find to offer one of the most barefoot-like feels in their lineup since it has minimal sidewall structure. The Iceland boots come in three colors on the International website, and in black on the US website. They’re currently on sale for $110 on the US site as part of early Black Friday sales.

Fit and sizing: My comments are the same as the Cozy boots as these have a very similar fit.

Shapen Fluffy Boots

Suede uppers and wool lining | $189 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

Ugg boots are known for their casual vibe—they were originally the go-to choice for surfers—but if you’re looking for something a bit more elevated, the Shapen Fluffy Boots are a stylish alternative. Shapen is best known for its dressier barefoot designs, and that same refined touch carries over to these boots. The latest version of these suede barefoot boots also got an upgrade with a genuine sheep wool lining for added warmth and comfort (the photos feature the original synthetic lining).

Fit and sizing: Shapen boots are a great fit for medium to wide width feet, and I have plenty of space for my higher instep. I’m wearing these in an EU38.

Final Thoughts

If you love the cozy warmth and easy slip-on style of Ugg boots but want something that’s better for your feet, there are now plenty of great barefoot alternatives to choose from. Whether you prefer the plush sheepskin feel of Softstar, the dressier look of Shapen, or the casual everyday comfort of Groundies, you don’t have to sacrifice natural movement for softness and style.

Each of these options keeps your feet warm while still allowing your toes to splay naturally and your feet to move the way they’re meant to. Once you’ve experienced that barefoot comfort, it’s hard to go back to traditional boots—even the iconic Uggs.

Find the best barefoot cowboy boots of 2025. Wide toe boxes, zero drop soles, and Western-inspired style for everyday barefoot comfort.

If there’s one style I get asked about all the time, it’s barefoot cowboy boots. And usually there are two groups of people searching for them. Some just love the classic Western look, while others are hoping for a true riding boot with a wide toe box.

This post is for the first group. The options below are fashion-focused cowboy-style boots with taller shafts, decorative stitching, and that Western flair—just made with a barefoot-friendly fit. All of these have a wide, naturally-shaped toe box and a flat, flexible sole. Just what you’d expect from a barefoot shoe!

If you’re looking for a boot that can handle life on a ranch or be used for horse riding, though, these aren’t it (the light-colored suede on the Shapen boots should be a giveaway that these would not last long). A proper riding boot still needs a heel to lock into the stirrups and a sturdy upper to protect your feet. Hopefully one day we’ll get a truly functional wide toe box cowboy boot for riding, but until then, these are the best barefoot-style options for everyday wear.

Best Barefoot Cowboy Boots

Groundies Tucson

$185 | EU36 – 43 | Suede | Shipped from US or Germany/EU

  • Subtle Western styling
  • Well-designed rubber outsole looks elevated but still light and flexible
  • Warm lining not as versatile
  • May be too narrow for wide/extra wide feet

The Groundies Tucson is a suede barefoot cowboy boot with subtle Western styling—perfect if you want that cowboy-inspired look without going full “yee-haw.” The shaft hits mid-calf, and instead of ornate stitching, the design stays clean and minimal. They’re fully lined with a velvety faux fur, making them cozy for winter but a little less versatile in warmer weather.

I really like how the rubber outsole mimics the look of a classic leather boot sole instead of a sneaker sole. It makes the boot feel a bit more refined, but it’s still lightweight and flexible.

They also have a full side zip, which makes them very easy to get on and off. The Tucson comes in reddish brown (shown here) and black

You can order them directly from the Groundies US website, which offers free shipping and free returns. They’re also available on the Groundies EU website, which is the best option for orders outside the US.

Fit & Sizing: The Tucson uses Groundies’ newer TrueSense® Urban Classic sole, which has been featured on many of their recent models. It offers a similar fit to other Groundies shoes and boots—best suited for narrow to medium-width feet.

I’m wearing these in an EU 38, and they’re a comfortable fit for my medium-width feet and higher instep. I can wear them with the included velvety removable insole, but removing it adds a bit more space if you have higher-volume feet.

Shapen Arizona Cowboy Boots

$219 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off | EU35 – 44 | Leather | Shipped from Slovakia/EU

  • Tall shaft with beautiful stitching
  • Roomy fit
  • Sneaker outsole doesn’t feel as elevated
  • Light suede hard to keep clean

Shapen went all in on the Arizona barefoot cowboy boot, complete with detailed stitching on the vamp and a tall shaft for a true Western look. They’re made from a light cream suede and lined with smooth leather, giving them a premium feel (though that means they may be a little harder to keep clean). Since they don’t have a warm lining, they’re more versatile for the shoulder seasons.

The sole is the same flexible rubber outsole used on many of Shapen’s boots and sneakers, so they have a similar fit and feel if you’re already familiar with the Shapen brand. The side zip goes about three-quarters of the way up, which makes it easier to get on and off.

Sizing: I’m wearing an EU 38 for my 23.3 cm feet, and they have a roomy fit—best suited for medium to wide widths and higher-volume feet. On my medium-width feet, I have a bit of extra space (even with socks), so I may add an insole since these don’t come with one.

Koel Cowboy Boots

$180 | Code KELLY for 10% off | EU36 – 43 | Leather | Shipped from USA with PedTerra

  • Classic leather cowboy look with stitching
  • Can run small and low volume

While these likely still aren’t ready for farm life, the Koel Frida, Fiona, and Frenia leather boots have a slightly more rugged look than some of the suede options on this list. These barefoot cowboy boots feature nappa leather uppers and come in a few different color combinations and styles.

The Frida is a mid-shaft boot made from black nappa leather with contrasting brown stitching for its Western-inspired design, and it’s lined with chrome-free leather. The Fiona Felt has brown and black color-blocked uppers and a felted wool lining for extra warmth, while the Frenia features a shorter shaft, color-blocked uppers, and a smooth leather lining.

If you’re in the US, you can order directly from PedTerra with free shipping and free returns. Use code KELLY for 10% off.

Fit and Sizing: I find Koel’s barefoot boots to fit narrow to medium width feet and low volume best, especially for the lined version. Some people need to size up in these to get the right width and volume.

BeFlamboyant Dallas Boots

$209 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off | EU36 – 46 | Vegan Leather and Suede | Shipped from Spain

  • Fun, detailed stitching design
  • Higher price point

Be Flamboyant is a newer vegan brand, and I’ve been loving all of the styles I’ve tried from them so far (especially the clogs). Their shoes and boots have a chunkier look because of the higher faux sidewall, but the sole itself is only 5mm thick, keeping them comfortably minimal.

The Dallas is their take on a barefoot cowboy boot, available in black faux leather or brown faux suede, both with a white contrasting stitched design. The lining is made from a breathable, plant-based material, and they include a removable 3mm insole.

Fit & Sizing: These are currently sold out, so I haven’t been able to try them yet. For reference, I wear an EU 37 in their loafers and an EU 38 in their lined clogs. If I were planning to wear the Dallas boots with socks, I’d likely choose the EU 38. Overall, I’ve found Be Flamboyant shoes to fit medium-width feet very well.

Final Thoughts on Barefoot Cowboy Boots

Barefoot cowboy boots are still a bit of a rarity, but it’s exciting to see more brands experimenting with Western-inspired styles that let your feet move naturally and give your stoes the room to splay. Right now, most of these options are better suited for everyday wear than true riding or farm work, but hopefully, as the barefoot shoe industry continues to grow, we’ll start to see even more functional Western options…maybe even one that can handle the ranch life too!

Be Lenka Winter or Arctic Edge | Leather or Vegan | $179 – $199 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

The Be Lenka Winter boots are a classic lace up boots with leather uppers, wool lining and insole, and waterproof membrane. Because of the thicker lining, you may need to size up. The Arctic Edge look more like winter sneakers, with a nylon upper, but still fully waterproof. I wear both in an EU39.

Barebarics Urban Edge Waterproof barefoot shoes

Barebarics UrbanEdge | $179 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

The UrbanEdge waterproof shoes are made with leather uppers and a waterproof membrane. The Primaloft insulation offers a lot of warmth. These have a thicker, chunkier-looking sole; they have good flexibility, but you notice the additional weight and lack of ground feel compared to more minimal barefoot shoes.

Excursion barefoot snow boots, Vivobarefoot Tundra Esc

Vivobarefoot Tundra Esc | $500 | Code KELLY25 for 25% off

Vivobarefoot is known for its outdoor performance footwear, and these Tundra Esc have been built for deep cold exploration. Because they’re meant for temperatures below where water and sweat freeze, they opted for insulated but permeable layers, so moisture won’t stay trapped in the boot. They’re constructed as two separate boots, with an outer layer, and a wool felt inner boot. The Michelin sole has excellent grip on snow and ice.

Manitoba Mukluks minimalist warm winter boots

Manitobah Mukluks | $180

Manitobah makes authentic, Indigenous-designed products in Canada, including mukluks built to withstand the freezing winters in the north. The Tamarack is waterproof and rated down to -25F with a sheepskin shearling lining. With regard to barefoot features, some boots have a narrower toe box than others. Most are zero-drop with a Vibram sole.

Steger Arctic Mukluks

Steger Arctic Mukluks | $250

Steger touts their mukluks as the warmest boots in the world. The Arctic style has a more rugged tread and rated down to -40F. Use snow-proof water-repellant spray on the leather portion of these boots to make them waterproof. They do have a heel-to-toe drop of several millimeters.

Barefoot Rain Boots

For more details reviews of these adult barefoot rainboots, check out this post. And for a list of rain boots for kids, see here.

Saguaro Shoes barefoot rubber rain boots with tall shaft

True barefoot rubber rainboot with flexible sole and shaft. The rubber shaft is very thin and flexible. These barefoot rain boots come in a lined and unlined version.

Xero Shoes Gracie barefoot rain boot for women

Xero Shoes Gracie Rubber Rain Boot | $80

Short rubber boot with a slip-on style. They can take some effort to get on as the elastic insert at the ankle isn’t super stretchy, but that also helps them stay on better. The fit is comparable to other Xero Shoes, which I find runs a little narrow in the toe box. Available in women’s sizes US5-12.

Asgard packable rain boot on Amazon

Asgard Tall Packable Rain Boot on Amazon | $44

These are more of a compromise option due to a more tapered toe, but they are zero-drop, lightweight, flexible, and very affordable.

Koel Rana are wide toe, wool-lined boots for Rain and snow

Koel Rana | $145-$198 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off at PedTerra

This is listed in both the rain and snow boot section, because it makes an excellent option for both thanks to the waterproof upper and cinched top. There is an unlined version for milder weather, and a lined one for colder weather.

Best Option for Ice

When it comes to icy conditions, even the best waterproof barefoot boots have their limits. While soft, sticky rubber soles provide better traction than harder materials and deeper lugs can offer some grip, no boot can guarantee safety on all types of ice. There are two good options that can make any barefoot boot ready for the ice.

The first is crampons like Yaktrax that fit over your boots. Yaktrax are lightweight cleats with metal coils that easily slip over your boots, making them perfect for icy sidewalks and trails. For more extreme conditions, crampons with metal spikes offer unmatched grip on steep, icy surfaces. Most options are pretty affordable, with many available for around $20.

The next option is to insert your own metal spikes into the rubber sole itself. If you live in a location where it is always ice, this could a more convenient solution.

I haven’t tried this, but a reader from Finland shared his recommendation. He used these spikes (BestGrip number 2407.0-SP on this website), and screwed them into his Vivobarefoot Tracker Forest ESC. Technically they look like they’re made for

These particular ones worked with these Vivobarefoot boots as the spikes weren’t as thick as the rubber sole + lug, which means they didn’t full penetrate through the sole. Here, the ESC sole is a 2.5mm base and 7.5mm lugs, so 9.5mm total. The spikes are 8.5mm long, with an installation depth of 6.2mm and a protruding spike of 2.3mm. The spike you need will vary based on what shoe you’re going to use it with–just make sure that the spike isn’t longer than the sole depth.

He also noted that he has removed the spikes, and they haven’t damaged the soles.

How We Tested the Waterproofness of Each Boot

We looked for boots that truly live up to their waterproof claim, often by not just wearing them out in the rain, but by taking them out on a hike and venturing through small streams and shallow rivers.

While some boots with water-resistant materials hold up to splashes on top of the shoe, we really wanted to make sure the seams were fully sealed, and the gusseted tongue was doing its job. This meant keeping the boot submerged for at least a few minutes to ensure that no water crept into the shoe.

How to Keep Your Barefoot Boots Waterproof

Use otter wax to waterproof barefoot leather boots

Even the best waterproof barefoot boots need a little maintenance to stay effective through the winter. Regular care can help your boots repel water, resist stains, and last longer. Here are some practical tips to keep your barefoot boots in top condition:

1. Apply a Waterproofing Spray or Wax

Most waterproof barefoot boots benefit from an occasional reapplication of a waterproofing treatment. Check the material of your boots and choose a product designed for that material:

  • Leather Boots: Use a leather waterproofing wax or cream to maintain both water resistance and suppleness. Beeswax-based treatments are a great option.
  • Suede or Fabric Boots: Opt for a spray designed for suede, nubuck, or textile materials. Apply evenly and let the boots dry for 24 hours for maximum protection.

Reapply these treatments every 1–2 months or after heavy use in wet conditions.

2. Clean Your Boots Regularly

Dirt, mud, and salt from winter roads can degrade waterproof coatings and damage materials over time.

  • Steps to Clean:
    1. Wipe off loose dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth.
    2. For tougher stains, use a gentle cleaning solution designed for your boot material.
    3. Let the boots air dry away from direct heat, which can crack leather or damage adhesives.

Clean boots also make it easier for waterproofing treatments to stick and work effectively.

3. Use a Boot Dryer

If your boots get wet, dry them as soon as possible to prevent moisture from seeping into the materials. A boot dryer is a great tool for quickly and gently removing moisture without damaging the structure of your boots. Avoid placing them near direct heat sources like radiators, as this can warp or shrink materials.

4. Protect the Seams

Seams are often the weakest point in waterproof footwear. Check the seams regularly for wear and consider using seam sealant if you notice any leaks. This simple step can extend the waterproof life of your boots significantly.

5. Store Boots Properly

When not in use, store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or moisture. Use boot trees or stuff them with newspaper to help maintain their shape.

6. Reassess Waterproofness Annually

Before the start of each winter season, test your boots by running water over them or stepping into a shallow puddle. If you notice any leaks, it’s time to clean, reapply waterproof treatments, and inspect the seams.

By following these steps, you can keep your waterproof barefoot boots performing at their best throughout the winter. A little care goes a long way in ensuring your boots stay warm, dry, and ready for every adventure!

Final Thoughts on Waterproof Barefoot Boots for Winter

Winter doesn’t mean giving up on barefoot shoes. With the right pair, you can stay warm, dry, and connected to the ground even in the harshest conditions. Whether you need something for heavy snow, wet slush, or frigid cold, there’s a barefoot winter boot to keep you moving comfortably.

Barefoot shoes are all about natural fit, function and feeling, but when you’re gearing up for a long hike, sometimes you want more protection for the tough terrain. As someone that loves to spend time outdoors, I’ve put dozens of minimalist and barefoot hiking boots to the test, searching for the perfect blend of freedom and ground feel that barefoot shoes offer, with the essential protection and durability needed for rugged hikes.

These boots have the essential features of a barefoot shoe—a wide, naturally-shaped toe box, and a flat and flexible sole. Plus, we’ve looked for boots with a rugged lug pattern for better grip, durable, weatherproof uppers, and a taller shaft for ankle protection.

If you prefer to hike in trail runners, check out this post of barefoot hiking shoes.

In this post, we’ll review the best barefoot hiking boots on the market, designed to keep you connected to the ground without compromising comfort or safety on your adventures.

Why we wear barefoot hiking boots

I used to wonder if I wasn’t a “legit” enough hiker as I’d pass people with their thick-soled, supportive, and stiff boots; I was always so much happier in a more minimal pair of sneakers. When I opted for a pair of leather hiking boots that were supposed to be better for my backpacking trip, I immediately regretted it.

While my lightweight sneakers didn’t have the optimal grip for a hike, they were certainly better than all the pain I was feeling in the stiff, heeled boots I was wearing. After that, I knew I needed to find a better option that didn’t compromise comfort or performance.

I realized most of the trail runners and hiking boots I’d tried thus far had massive design flaws. Hiking shoes with a narrow, tapered toe aren’t designed to fit the natural shape of the human foot. They pressure and deform the foot into becoming shoe-shaped. And the stiff, heeled soles aren’t designed for natural human movement. They alter the way our feet, ankles, knees and hips move, often resulting in pain somewhere along the kinetic chain.

When I found hiking boots that were designed for the natural human foot and natural human movement, everything started to work. I no longer needed to break in my shoes, they just fit. If you too have been on the hunt for comfortable hiking shoes, then use this guide to barefoot hiking boots to find the best pair for you.

How and where we tested

We love to travel and we love to hike, so most of our trips combine the two. We’ve tested our barefoot hiking boots, shoes and sandals all across the United States, from North Carolina to California and Arizona. We’ve dotted the other continents to include hikes in Panama, Portugal and Morocco, spanning rain forest to arid desert.

How this guide is different from other shoe review posts

Many shoe guides rank their recommendations, and give an overall “best” pick. Sure, we have our favorites, but we understand that our preferences are centered around the shape, size, and volume of our specific foot. When you start wearing barefoot shoes, you likely get to know your feet and body a little better, and realize that it’s not an every shoe fits all. This post will not only help you find the best hiking boot for the trails you usually hike, but the ideal shoe for your feet and goals as a barefoot shoe-wearer.

What to look for in the best barefoot hiking boots

I first consider the fundamental characteristics of a barefoot shoe:

1 Wide, foot-shaped Toe Box — Shoes that fit the natural shape of the foot. Most conventional shoes taper in the toe box, which squishes the toes together. Feet are widest at the toes, and shoes should reflect that.

2 Flat aka zero-drop — No heel-to-toe drop. A flat shoe allows you to stand in a natural, neutral position.

3 Thin, Flexible Soles — Soles should provide protection, but still allow for a sensory connection to the ground beneath and easy movement.

When it comes to hiking shoes, there are a few more things to consider. However, since the idea is that my feet are strong and capable, I no longer look for hiking shoes that provide a lot of support or stability. My feet can do that on their own now. But it does help to consider how much grip, toe protection or cushion I may need based on the environment.

Good traction – For slippery or rocky paths, I look for hiking shoes with a grippier sole and some decent lugs.

Toe protection – Even if the trail isn’t super rocky, it’s still nice to have a little bit of protection around the toes.

Breathable – This post focuses on barefoot hiking shoes and trail runners, so I’m usually using them in warmer environments.

Water-resistance – Both the weather and terrain can be unpredictable, so the best boots will keep your feet dry.

Some cushion – the barefoot and minimalist hiking shoes in this post features a range of cushion. You can pick what you’re most comfortable with, especially consider the length and types of trails you’re hiking.

Barefoot boots have a wider, naturally-shaped toe box compared to the tapered toe box of conventional hikers

Sizing reference

For most of these shoes, I’ll provide a sizing reference based on my experience with the fit. Read more on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I’m most often a US7.5/EU38 in my barefoot shoes, but sometimes size up in barefoot boots to accommodate for thicker socks. My feet are medium width and measure 23.3cm long. I typically look for shoes with an extra 1.2cm of space.

My husband Aaron also tested out some of these boots. His feet measure 26.8cm and he is most often a US10.5/EU43.

Best Barefoot Hiking Boots

With so many options available, it’s important to choose the right boot based on your specific needs, whether you’re after maximum ground feel, an extra wide toe box, or a budget-friendly option. Here’s a breakdown of the best barefoot hiking boots, sorted by category.

Best barefoot hiking boots from narrow to wide

Best All-Around Barefoot Hiking Boots

The boots in this first section are great all-rounders. They’ll be a good fit for most people, and have you covered for a wide variety of trails and weather. They have a moderate stack height of 10 to 18mm with a rugged sole, so they provide comfort and protection on rocky trails. The uppers have proven durable and waterproof.

Lems Boulder Boot Summit or Grip Waterproof

Stack height: 13 to 16mm | Uppers: Oiled Leather or Nylon | Waterproof

Price: $185 – $195 | Sizes: Women’s US5 – Men’s US15

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

New Slip-resistant sole on the Lems Boulder Boot Grip

What I love:

  • Rugged leather boots that look great
  • Cushioned, but lightweight
  • Roomy toes, but don’t look super wide
  • Waterproof and vegan options

What I don’t:

  • Waterproofing doesn’t always hold up
  • Previously sizing was inconsistent (but it’s gotten much better)

Location + Shipping: Based in the US, flat rate $5.95 US Shipping and free returns. See shipping info for international countries here .

Lems took the fan favorite minimalist Boulder Boot and gave it a few upgrades to make two versions that are better for hiking: the Boulder Grip and the Boulder Summit.

The Boulder Boot Grip Waterproof is essentially the Boulder Boot with a grippier, non-slip sole. This makes it ideal for both winter and light hiking. They’re zero drop with a 13mm stack height. At this sole thickness, you’ll be trading off some ground feel for cushion and warmth. Lems boots remain lightweight even with a thicker sole due to the air-injection rubber construction.

To keep your feet dry, the boots are made with full-grain oiled leather, a gusseted tongue, and a waterproof membrane.

Lems Boulder Summit Boots are minimalist hiking boots with a rugged tread

For those looking for a pair of barefoot hiking boots with more rugged lugs, check out the Boulder Boot Summit Waterproof. The 4mm deep lugs are arranged in a zig-zag pattern for better traction on mud and snow. They have a slightly higher stack height, coming in at 16mm.

The Summit Boots technically start out with a 2mm heel-to-toe drop, but as these have a more cushioned mid-sole, they are meant to compress with wear to be zero-drop (and therefore avoid becoming negative drop when the foam compresses). When it comes to the Summit, you can opt for leather or vegan nylon uppers; both have a waterproof membrane.

Find a full brand review of Lems here, including a mini review of each boot style.

Fit & Sizing: I generally find that I’m a half size up in the boots to leave a little extra room for thicker socks. I’m a size US7.5 in most Lems shoes and a US8 in the new Lems boot sizing (so that goes for the Lems Boulder Boot Waterproof Grip). For the Boulder Boot Summit, Aaron opted for a US 11, which is 1/2 size up. Lems currently recommends your typical US size, but from Aaron’s other Lems shoes, it seems like the 1/2 size up has been a better fit. Plus, that leaves some extra room for thicker hiking or winter wool socks. The boots are unisex, and there is no difference in the size or width of the boots listed on the men’s or women’s pages.

Bahé Rediscover Hiking Boots

Stack height: 15 to 18mm | Uppers: Synthetic | Waterproof

Price: $249 | Code BAREFOOTGUIDE for 10% off | Sizes: EU36 – EU47

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Bahe Rediscover barefoot grounding hiking boots

Discount Code: BAREFOOTGUIDE for 10% off

What I love:

  • Very roomy toe box without appearing exceptionally wide
  • Waterproof but lightweight uppers
  • Good lugs for wet and muddy conditions

What I don’t:

  • Give up some ground feel and flexibility for more cushion and stability
  • Price is high

Location + Shipping: Based in the UK, Shipping to the US and EU is £15.

Bahé may be new to the barefoot shoe scene, but they’ve quickly become one of the brands I reach for most often. They excel at high-quality, moderately cushioned shoes with a wide toe box that are optimal for the outdoors.

These have a total stack height of 18mm with the included 3mm insole; the boots are finished so that you can wear them without the insole.

The Bahé Rediscover boots give me all of the features I want, like lugs for good traction, waterproof uppers, and a padded collar, without adding so much weight. Add to that that they’re still pretty breathable, and you’ve got a solid, all-year round hiking boot.

The uppers are ripstop nylon, which helps make them both lightweight and waterproof. I hung out in the river with the boots half submerged for a while, and no water got in.

The reinforcements on the heel and especially the toe give me confidence in the longevity of these boots, and the knowledge that my toes will be protected from all the rocks and branches, even with a few clumsy missteps.

Find a full brand review of Bahé, including a review of their wide toe box trail runners and minimalist sandals.

Fit & Sizing: These hiking boots are best suited for medium to wide-width feet and medium to high-volume feet. I have higher instep, and can still wear these with the removable insole. I’ve been wearing a US7/EU38 comfortably with a pair of hiking socks. Remember that feet do tend to swell when hiking after longer periods, so I tend to like my hiking boots a little bit roomier than regular sneakers.

Freet Mudee Hiking Boots

Stack height: 10.5mm | Uppers: Leather | Waterproof

Price: $160 | Code KELLY for 10% off | Sizes: EU37 – EU49

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Freet Mudee leather barefoot hiking boot

Discount Code: KELLY for 10% off

What I love:

  • Waterproof but lightweight uppers
  • Good lugs for wet and muddy conditions
  • Focus on sustainability in materials, and no use of PFCs in waterproofing treatment

What I don’t:

  • Recycled leather has more of a plasticky feel

Location + Shipping: Based in the UK. Free shipping and exchanges to the US.

Freet is an all-around great barefoot boot as it checks pretty much every box I’m looking for, and it’s under $200–which feels a little crazy to point out, but a well-built barefoot boot is often ticking past this mark.

The Mudee L boots are fully waterproof with recycled leather uppers, gusseted tongue, and a waterproofing treatment that does not use PFCs. Feet makes an effort to use more sustainable materials and practices, reflected in a majority of this boot being made from recycled materials.

These don’t compromise on lugs or ground feel, giving you a ton of grip, but a lot of ground connection with only a 10.5mm stack height. Overall, these are a really clean, good-looking barefoot hiking boot.

Fit & Sizing: Freet barefoot shoes tend to fit those with wide, high-volume feet best. Sizing is unisex. The size can vary a bit from model to model, so check the measurements at the bottom of each shoe page.  I typically wear a size EU 38, and opted for a size 38 here. My longest foot measurement is about 233mm, and the 38s have a 240mm insole. The toe box is very roomy as the mesh uppers curve out and up, so you have even more room beyond the insole.

Best Hiking Boots with Minimalist Sole

This whole list is about barefoot hiking boots, which by nature means they should all have a minimalist sole. But things are relative. While most barefoot sneakers may have a stack height of 5 or 6mm, many of the hiking boots range upwards of 10mm. For those that are most focused on their connection and feeling with the ground, this next option has the thinnest and most flexible sole.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Leather and Forest Esc

Stack height: 6.5mm to 9.5mm sole  | Uppers: Leather or Textile | Waterproof or Water-resistant

Price: $250+ | Code BSG20 for 20% off | Sizes: EU35 – EU49

Best For: narrow to medium width, low to average volume

Vivobarefoot Tracker FG Winter barefoot boots

Discount Code: BSG20

What I love:

  • Grippy soles with options for wet or dry trails
  • Focus on sustainability and transparency
  • 100 day trial period

What I don’t:

  • More expensive
  • Some versions do not have a separate waterproof membrane
  • Too narrow and low volume for some

Location + Shipping: UK-based, offer worldwide shipping | Manufacturing location: Most styles made in Vietnam or Portugal

What sets Vivobarefoot apart is its commitment to foot health, sustainability, and high performance. Hikers looking for something that feels more like a second skin than a separate boot are likely going to be happiest in a pair of Vivobarefoot boots. The caveat is that the shape, width and volume of Vivo’s boots can be somewhat limiting; they’re best for those with more of a slope shaped foot that is narrow to medium width and low volume.

The Vivobarefoot Trackers have long been the brand’s signature hiking boot, and they’re getting a major overhaul for winter 2024. They’ll be available in both a leather and vegan textile upper. The Textile Tracker Boot uses hydrophobic treatments, non-absorbent materials, sealed seams and an inner breathable membrane to make them fully waterproof.

They removed the waterproof membrane for the new Leather Tracker Boot to make it more breathable, and are instead relying on the water-resistant leather and sealed seems. Per Vivo, they still stand up to their rigorous waterproofing test, but I have yet to try this new version out.

You’ll see some changes to the sole, which is what Vivo dubs it’s All-Terrain (or AT for short) sole. It has a 2mm sole base and 4.5mm lugs in a hex pattern that was created for better grip and durability.

For Vivobarefoot’s most rugged barefoot hiking boot, try the Tracker Forest Esc. The  Michelin outsole features 7mm treads, a 2.5mm sole base, and the promised durability from the Michelin brand. The deep grooves running from heel to toe are made for soft, muddy ground when your priority is traction. Similar to the Leather Tracker, these use water-resistant materials, but do not have a separate membrane.

Fit and sizing: I find that most Vivobarefoot boots fit true to size. For reference, I wear an EU38/USD7.5 based on my 23.3cm foot measurement, and my partner Aaron wears an EU43 based on a 26.8cm foot in Vivo boots. The men’s styles are slightly wider than the women’s. Vivobarefoot has a tool on their website that will scan a photo of your foot to give you a size recommendation for a specific shoe.

As someone that has a medium width, higher volume foot, I often find myself wanting a little more room in the toe box and a little more vertical space in the boot. I usually wear Vivos without the insole to get more space, and that makes them more comfortable.

Best Wide Toe Box Hiking Boots with Maximal Cushion

This next section is for those that want a wide toe box, zero-drop hiking boot, but still want the cushion.

Altra Lone Peak Hiker

Stack height: 25mm | Uppers: Ripstop mesh with reinforced toe area | Waterproof Option

Price: $150 to $180 | Sizes: US Women’s 5.5 to US Men’s 16

Best For: Medium to wide width, medium volume

Altra Lone Peak All Weather Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots

What I love:

  • Great grip and traction
  • Transition shoe for barefoot beginners

What I don’t:

  • Cushion is very soft and springy, which can feel unsettling after wearing thinner barefoot shoes
  • Would like more shoes using the widest Original FootShape

Altra stood out in the running scene when they launched their wide toe box, zero-drop shoes. In contrast to most shoes that have these features, Altras also have quite a bit of cushion.

The Altra Lone Peak Mid Hiking Boots are a favorite amongst through hikers as they have plenty of room for your toes, a rugged sole, and a 25mm stack height including a rock plate to help you through long days and rocky trails. They use Altra’s Original FootShape Fit, which is their widest option.

These wide toe box hiking boots come in two different versions: the Lone Peak Hiker with mesh and suede overlays that is geared towards warmer weather, and the Lone Peak All-Weather Mid that is fully waterproof. Both come up over the ankle to provide protection and stability, which can be helpful if you have a heavier load like backpacking. The Altra Lone Peak hikers are also available at REI.

Fit & Sizing: Most find that these Lone Peaks fit true toe size. I wear a women’s US8. The toe box and overall fit of the Altra Lone Peaks are spacious enough for medium width and volume feet. They do offer a wide version in both the men’s and women’s; note that the actual rubber outsole of the shoe isn’t wider in the wide version relative to the same size in regular, there is just more upper material which creates more volume and opportunity for the feet to spread out.

Most Affordable Barefoot Hiking Boots

Finding quality barefoot hiking boots doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. For those looking to experience the benefits of minimalist footwear and sticking to their budget, Saguaro shoes combines performance, comfort, and affordability.

Saguaro Shoes Brave I or Vitality V Hiking Boots

Stack Height: 6mm + 3mm insole | Uppers: Microfiber and Mesh | Waterproof options

Price: $50 to $80 | Code: KELLY15 for 15% off Saguaro website | Sizes: EU36 to EU48

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Saguaro Brave Barefoot Hiking Boots

Discount Code: KELLY15

What I love:

  • Affordable
  • Good quality for the price

What I don’t:

  • Durability can be inconsistent
  • No transparency on materials or production
  • Hiking/Waterproof sole option is somewhat tapered/sloped

Location + Shipping: Offer worldwide shipping | Manufacturing location: China

Saguaro is an affordable barefoot shoe brand that has a full line of barefoot shoes, including hiking boots. With boots starting at $50, they deliver the basics of a barefoot hiking boot at a fraction of the cost of premium brands, which often exceed $150.

People’s first question is often about durability for Saguaro since it is much more affordably priced. While they may not match the advanced features and materials of higher-end barefoot boots, they provide an accessible entry point for those looking for a wide toe box hiking boot with a minimalist sole. My son wore a pair of Saguaro shoes daily through the summer, and they were still usable when he grew out of them (though the insole did need to be replaced).

The Brave I is Saguaro’s waterproof hiking boot that uses Saguaro’s 6mm rubber hiking sole with shallow lugs. They provide reasonable grip on easy or moderately rated trails. I find this hiking sole shape to be slightly tapered and sloped, especially compared to their toe sole design that’s used for their trail runners.

For a roomier toe box and better lugs, try the Vitality V hiking boots. These aren’t waterproof, but as they’re geared toward warmer weather, the mesh uppers are breathable and quick-drying. This sole is reminiscent of Vibram FiveFingers with an outline of each of the spots for the toes, though they are not individually separated.

In the photos below, the Brave I is on the left and the Vitality V is on the right.

Fit & Sizing: The Saguaro hiking boots typically fit true to size. For me that’s an EU38, for Aaron that’s an EU43. The hiking sole on the Brave I has a narrower fit in the toe box, so you could size up for more space in the toe box. I find the Vitality V sole shape quite roomy. Both accommodate medium to high volume feet, and even higher volume when you remove the insole.

Best Hiking Boots for Narrow Feet

Xero Shoes Scrambler Mid

Stack Height: 12mm | Uppers: Synthetic | Waterproof option

Price: $153 – $190 | Sizes: Women’s US 5 to EU48

Best For: narrow width, low to medium volume

Xero Shoes Scrambler Mid Barefoot hiking boots

What I love:

  • Great grip with Michelin soles
  • Super lightweight

What I don’t:

  • Narrower toe box (but still foot-shaped)
  • Stiffer than others with comparable thickness

Uppers: Abrasion-resistant and breathable mesh upper with protective overlays

Location + Shipping: Offer worldwide shipping

Xero Shoes has a few options when it comes to barefoot hiking boots, but my favorite is the Scrambler Mid. The sole is made in made in partnership with Michelin, and modeled after their mud-shedding mountain bike tires. It’s super grippy and super light, and performed well on mud, rocks and slick pavement. They have a good balance of ground feel and flexibility while still providing enough protection for tougher trails and longer distances.

The uppers are an abrasion-resistant and breathable mesh upper with protective overlays. The Scrambler Mid boots come in a regular version and a waterproof version, though you’ll have to pony up about an extra $40 for that waterproof membrane when they’re full price (which feels a bit excessive to me).

My main gripe is that while they’re foot-shaped, they’re still fairly narrow through the toe box. I have medium width feet, and I can feel my pinky toe hitting the edge.

Fit & Sizing: Xero Shoes has separate sizes for men and women, with the men’s version running slightly wider. These run a little short, so if you’re between sizes, I’d size up. I’ve been wearing these in a 7.5, but have been sizing up more recently to a size 8 in my Xero Shoes winter boots and found this to help a bit with the width while not being too long. These also fit low to medium volume best, so I wear them without the insole as I have a higher instep.

Best for Extra Wide Feet

If you’ve tried several barefoot shoes and you’re still finding that you need more room for a healthy toe splay, these barefoot hiking boots are specifically tailored to those with extra wide feet.

Realfoot Trekker High

Stack height: 4mm outsole + 4mm insole | Uppers: Nubuck leather | Water-resistant

Price: €192 | Sizes: EU36 – 47

Best For: Extra wide toe splay , low to medium volume

Realfoot Trekker High Barefoot Boots

What I love:

  • Extra wide toe box
  • Very Flexible sole

What I don’t:

  • Lugs aren’t geared towards tough terrain

Uppers: Mesh uppers with water-resistant coating; reinforced heel and toe

Location + Shipping: Based in the Czech Republic. International shipping via FedEx for €19.

The Realfoot Trekker High boots offer the most space in the toe box out of the barefoot hiking boots on the market. They come in leather or vegan version, both in the same comfortable, foot-friendly design that allows for natural movement and plenty of room for toe splay. While they do have a lot of room in the toe box, they’re much narrower through the midfoot and heel, so they’re best for what many call “pizza” feet (narrow heel, wide toes). If your foot is wide overall, you may find these boots too tight.

The Trekker High boots have an integrated Te-Por® membrane, which is both breathable and water-resistant. They can handle light rain, damp conditions, or shallow puddles without issue. However, they are not fully waterproof, so they may not be the best option for extended hikes in consistently wet environments.

The 4mm sole is very flexible. They come with a 4mm insole for more cushion, or you can opt for the brand’s thicker 6mm insole for rougher trails and colder weather.

Fit & Sizing: Realfoot offers both length and width measurements in their size chart. I opted for an EU37 for sneakers, and the EU38 for boots to include room for thicker socks.

Softstar Switchback

Stack height: 12 mm sole + 6 mm insole | Uppers: Leather, Leather + Textile | Water-resistant

Price: $250 | Sizes: Women’s US 5.5 – Men’s US 14

Best For: Extra wide toe splay , low to medium volume

Softstar switchback barefoot hiking boots with Vibram sole

What I love:

  • Extra wide option
  • Vibram Megragrip soling that is both rugged and durable

What I don’t:

  • Not waterproof
  • Construction not as durable as other options

Location + Shipping: Based in the US

Softstar designed the Switchback to be a hardwearing barefoot hiking boot, with a Vibram outsole and two upper options: all leather, or a Superfabric textile and leather accents. They’re available in a regular width, as well as the brand’s “Primal Friendly” width for extra wide feet.

They feel like a bit of a conundrum in that the Vibram Megagrip soles and merino wool lining seem to be begging for cold, wet weather and muddy trails, but the non-gusseted tongue and lack of sealed seams or membrane means these boots are only water-resistant to a point. Splashes or a quick step in the water is fine, but standing in water will eventually lead to damp feet.

The boots feature a 6mm sole plus a 6mm midsole attached with stitchdown contraction, which means the boots can be resoled when they wear out. As far as durability, the stitching of the uppers can be a weak point, leading it to come undone where it repeatedly bends.

The replaceable merino insoles allow for easy swapping based on wear or weather, letting you opt for thinner insoles in warm months or thicker ones for cold winter hikes.

Other Barefoot Hiking Boots to Consider

BeLenka Ranger Boots are barefoot boots for hiking and winter

BeLenka Ranger Boots | $279 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off | BeLenka makes great barefoot boots, but none of them fully cross over into a boot that I’d reach for first when I was heading out on a hike. The Rangers would be the closest bet, but they still feel a bit like a a hiking boot made for a city person. If you want a really versatile winter boot that’s good for light hiking, then these are a great option.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots are durable and well-made hiking boots

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots | $200 | Available on Amazon | These are one of the best built boots I’ve worn, but even their barefoot line has a slight taper to the toe box. I’d recommend these when durability is your primary concern (they make a great work boot).

Xero Shoes Ridgeway retro barefoot hiking boots

Xero Shoes Ridgeway Boots | $126 | Waterproof | These Xero Shoes Ridgeway boots have a cool retro aesthetic, but don’t perform as well as other Xero Shoes hiking boots like the Scramblers. The sole feels stiff and not particularly grippy.

The short list of the best men’s barefoot boots for winter.

One of the beautiful things about barefoot shoes is the simplicity that comes with the minimalism of it all. Since barefoot shoes are designed to be flat and foot-shaped, we drop the features that often differentiate women’s shoes from men’s shoes, like pointier toes and higher heels.

While some barefoot shoe brands still do make men’s and women’s versions, many brands are unisex. If there are separate men’s and women’s versions, the men’s are typically slightly wider and feature different colors or styling. But really, you can simply pick the shoe that fits your foot best as all barefoot shoes are meant to fit the natural shape of the human foot.

My barefoot shoe lists are typically for both men and women, but this list focuses on barefoot boots that men might find more appealing, mostly due to styling and color options.

Best Barefoot Boots for Men

Men’s Barefoot Boots for Winter

1 Lems Boulder Boots

Price: $150 – $185 | Sizes: Women’s US5 – Men’s US15

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Lems Boulder Summit Boots are minimalist hiking boots with a rugged tread

For a rugged, waterproof winter boot or hiking boot, opt for the Boulder Boot Waterproof Grip or the Boulder Boot Summit. Both of these boots feature full-grain oiled leather uppers, a waterproof membrane, and a grippy tread. The Boulder Boot Grip uses a slip-resistant sole made for slippery conditions, while the Summit features 4mm zig-zag lugs that are ideal for hiking.

These minimalist boots feature a generous toe box and a zero-drop sole, but are cushier than other barefoot options with a stack height of 13mm and above.

See a complete Lems brand review here, including more details on each specific Boulder Boot model.

2 Vivobarefoot Gobi Boots and Tracker Boots

Price: $200+ | Code BSG20 for 20% off | Sizes: Men’s EU40 – 49

Best For: narrow to medium width feet, low to medium volume

Vivobarefoot Mens Gobi Boots

Code: BSG20

Whether you’re on the hiking trails or the city streets, Vivobarefoot’s new barefoot winter boots will keep your feet comfortable and in style. Try the new Gobi Boot high-tops in the original version (unlined rawhide leather, so best for fall and spring) or in the Winterized edition with a faux shearling lining. These boots give a chunky vibe while managing to be some of the lightest and most flexible boots in my closet.

The Tracker II FG has always been one of my favorite barefoot hiking boots for its optimum performance and classically good looks. For heavy winter conditions, opt for the new Tracker Winter SG with a extra warm lining and thermal insole.

Vivobarefoot Tracker FG Winter barefoot boots

3 Crave Boots

Price: €187 | Sizes: Men’s EU37 – 46

Best For: medium to wide feet, low to medium volume

Crave is a new barefoot shoe brand (and sister brand to Angles) that brings an urban edge to their styles. The Crave Glasgow is a sneaker/boot that features leather uppers, gusseted tongue and a waterproof membrane. At 5mm, the sole is thin and flexible with great ground feel. The Glasgow boots come in smooth black leather or a cognac nubuck leather.

4 BeLenka Winter Boots

BeLenka Ranger Boots are barefoot boots for hiking and winter

BeLenka is one of the most prolific barefoot shoe brands, and that includes boots. While a lot of the boots are geared towards women, there are many with more neutral or rugged styling too. For the ultimate winter boot, try the BeLenka Winter 3.0. Fully lined with merino wool including a wool insole, these are one of the warmest barefoot boots on the market.

Most of BeLenka’s boots accommodate wide, higher volume feet, but because of the extensive lining, the winter boots tend to be better suited to lower volume feet.

Learn how to properly waterproof barefoot boots for winter so your feet stay dry and your boots last longer.

Barefoot shoes are all about keeping your feet comfortable…and part of that is keeping them warm and dry in the winter. Snow, rain, slush and freezing cold temps can be a challenging time for those of with minimalist footwear as you’re trying to balance flexibility of movement with staying warm. Adding thermal or sheepskin insoles and waterproofing your barefoot boots are two ways to prep for winter to keep your feet warm and dry.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll take you through the steps of waterproofing your barefoot boots and shoes for winter. This includes the products we’ve used to clean, condition and waterproof our boots.

Why Waterproof your Barefoot Boots?

Leather Boots

Many barefoot boots are leather, so we’ll first start with why it’s important to waterproof your leather boots.

Leather is naturally water-repellant, but as skin, it’s a pourous material that needs to be cleaned and conditioned regularly. Waterproofing your barefoot leather boots will keep the leather from drying out and add a protective barrier that prevents rain and snow from penetrating the leather. Proper maintenance of your leather boots will not only keep your feet dry, but significantly extend the lifespan of your leather footwear. Barefoot boots are expensive, so it’s definitely worth the effort to help them last as long as possible.

Many leather boots may come pretreated, but this will likely wear off with time and use. It’s best to apply a waterproofing treatment to your leather boots at least once a season, and more if you’re sloshing through a lot of water regularly.

Fabric or Synthetic boots

Fabric or Synthetic boots can benefit from waterproofing too. Some come with a waterproofing agent pre-applied, or you can add your own to boots that don’t come with any treatment. Regularly applying a waterproofing treatment will help you get the most out your barefoot boots during winter!

How to Waterproof Barefoot Boots: A step-by-step guide

Here we’ll walk through the process of waterproofing your barefoot boots, including the materials you’ll need.

1 Clean your shoes

Before you waterproof your boots, you’ll want to make sure they’re clean. Use a  shoe cleaning brush to wipe off any visible dust or dirt. After this, I also liked to wipe the shoes down with a damp towel.

For a deeper clean, use a shoe cleaning product. Try this one for leather boots, and this one for nubuck and textiles. After cleaning your shoes, rinse them off.

Allow them to completely dry before going on to the next steps.

2 Condition leather boots if needed

As leather ages, it becomes dry and dull. Periodically using a leather conditioner will help restore leather’s natural oils, which makes it more supple and resistant to water.

3 Choose the right waterproofing product

Selecting the appropriate waterproofing product for the material of your barefoot boots is the most important part of this process.

Note that many waterproofing products, especially those for leather, will darken the color as it is adding moisture. Waxes and creams usually make the leather appear darker and richer. It’s best to test the product on an inconspicuous place first to make sure you’re happy with the way the waterproofing product alters the color of the boots.

Waterproofing wax is best for full-grain leather.

  • Otter Wax: My go-to pick for waterproofing barefoot leather boots is Otter Wax. Otter Wax is an all-natural product made from beeswax and lanolin. It moisturizes and protects your boots, so I find that I can skip the leather conditioner if I’m using this.
  • Nikwax Waterproofing Wax: Nikwax is one of the most popular brands for footwear cleaning and waterproofing products, and they have an option for almost every kind of material. Opt of rate Waterproofing Wax for your full-grain leather boots.
Use otter wax to waterproof barefoot leather boots

Waterproofing Spray is ideal for smooth, soft leather.

Waterproofing Spray for Nubuck and Suede

  • Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Spray: Waterproofing products for smooth leather vs nubuck and suede are usually not interchangeable. Nubuck and suede are textured — they appear fuzzy and napped. Applying a waterproofing wax like Otter wax would ruin suede boots, so make sure you’re using the correct waterproofing product that will both preserve the texture and make them water repellant.

Waterproofing Spray for Fabric

You can also add a waterproofing spray to your cotton or knit barefoot sneakers to make them more wearable during the wetter months. Here are a few good options:

Select the right product to waterproof your barefoot shoes

4 Apply the Waterproofing Product

Use a cloth or applicator brush to evenly apply the product, making sure to cover all areas of the boot. Pay extra attention to seams and stitching.

5 Allow the boots to dry

Let the boots dry naturally, away from direct heat sources. Some products may require exposure to heat for activation, so check the product label for specific instructions.

6 Repeat as Needed

Depending on the product and usage, you may need to reapply waterproofing periodically to maintain protection. Waterproofing your boots at the start of every winter is a good practice, and then you can assess based on wear from there!

How to waterproof barefoot boots for winter: step-by-step guide

By waterproofing your barefoot boots, you’re not only preserving their appearance but also ensuring that they serve you well in wet, wintery weather while keeping your feet dry and comfortable. It’s a simple yet effective way to care for your investment in healthy, barefoot shoes.

Keep your feet comfortable and your boots on trend this season with white and off-white barefoot boots!

White and off-white boots have been trending for the last few years, and thankfully, a lot barefoot shoe brands have joined in. They’re a nice way to keep it neutral and also lighten up a look, especially compared to the more traditional black and brown boots. There are so many white and off-white barefoot boots to choose from, I thought I’d highlight a few of my favorites. It’s always a win-win when you can prioritize foot health and comfort and still keep your style fresh and updated.

Most of these boots are best for mild winter weather in that they’re not fully waterproof, and white can be much harder to keep clean. To protect your boots, I recommend treating with a waterproofing spray for suede or leather.

The sizing recommendations are all based off of my 23.3 cm foot measurement. I’m typically an EU38/US7.5 in tennis shoes, but sometimes I’ll size up to an EU39/US 8 for boots, depending on the brand.

White and Off-white Barefoot Boots

1 Lems Telluride Boots

Widest Lems Toe Box | 11 mm sole + 3.5 mm insole | zero-drop | $145

The Telluride Boot is Lem’s newest style, with soft suede uppers and faux fur lining around the collar. To prep for winter, add a water-repellant treatment like one from Nikwax.

The Telluride Boot uses Lem’s widest fit last, so it’s really roomy in the toes. These are also one of the cushier options when it comes to minimalist boots; they have a 1mm stack height plus a 3.5mm removable insole. Even with the thicker stack height, these boots are very lightweight thanks to the use or air injection rubber. They use the same outsole as the Primal Zen

Sizing: I’m a size 7.5 in the Zen sneakers and opted for a size 8 in these boots to leave room for thicker socks.

2 Vivobarefoot Gobi Boots

$200 | Code BSG20 for 20% off

I love that the new Gobi boots provide a chunky look while still offering a lightweight and flexible sole. The boots come in black, dark brown, and limestone, but the limestone is available in women’s sizing only. It’s like a greige, with the tone leaning a bit cool (more light grey than cream).

The uppers are unlined wild hide leather; it’s so soft and flexible. That said, these are best for fall or mild winters. Vivo just released a winterized version of the Gobi boot with a faux shearling lining (unforunately no off-white, but they do have a beautiful caramel color)

Sizing: I’m wearing these in my regular size, and EU38. These are unlined, so there was no need to size up.

Vivobarefoot Gobi boots in limestone are hightop barefoot leather boots

3 Shapen Fluffy Boots

€149 | Code BFSHOEGUIDE5 for 5% off

These Shapen Fluffy boots use a beautiful off-white suede for the uppers and are fully lined with the softest faux fur! They’re a great replacement for a pair of Ugg-type boots. Like the Shapen Cozy that I wore all last winter, these are lightweight, really flexible, and really warm. The outsole has a dot pattern to give it some grip, but these don’t have deep lugs specifically designed for traction, so they’re not the best option in icy conditions.

Sizing: I opted for these in my typical shoe size of EU38, and had plenty of room, even with the extra lining. I wear an EU37 in Shapen tennis shoes, so generally I find it best to go one size down from my typical size for Shapen boots and shoes.

4 Wildling Perto Wool High-Tops

$139 | For free shipping, use code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling’s winter line heavily features wool uppers, including the cream-colored Perto high-tops. If you came here from my video, I featured the Mundača from a few years ago. Wildling shoes are like a slipper meets a combat boot with water-resistant uppers, integrated membrane and wool lining. All Wildlings have similar styling and are incredibly soft and flexible.

5 FeelBarefoot Chelsea Boots on Etsy

$125 | Code KELLY50 for 50% of retail

Feelbarefoot shoes are minimalist leather boots and shoes handmade in Turkey. The Feelbarefoot Chelsea Boots are a great option for dressier barefoot shoes. The leather sole gives them a dressier vibe than options with a pure rubber sole, but you can also add the additional 2mm rubber outsole to make these work better for wet weather. They feature an elastic side panel for easy on and off. The Chelsea boots look great pair with both pants and dresses/skirts.

I love them in this cream color, but they do have a ton of other colors to choose from! Read a full review of the Feelbarefoot brand here.

Help your little one’s feet stay warm this winter with the best barefoot winter boots for kids.

Finding healthy, comfortable shoes for kids can be surprisingly hard. When I say healthy, I mean shoes with a flat, flexible sole and a shape that actually follows the natural shape of a child’s foot. These are often called barefoot or minimalist shoes, and they give kids protection while still letting them move the way their feet are designed to move. They help build strong foot muscles, support natural posture, and keep toes from getting cramped in a narrow toe box.

Winter makes the search even trickier, because not only are you looking for everyday comfort, but a shoe that can stand up to cold, wet, or snowy weather.

This guide rounds up the best minimalist winter shoes and barefoot boots for kids, all tested for the key barefoot characteristics along with warmth and durability. I’ve broken it out into barefoot winter boots for everyday wear and snow boots.

Everyday barefoot winter boots for kids with warm lining
Warm-lined barefoot winter shoes for kids from Mukishoes, BeLenka, Saguaro and Wildling

Best Barefoot Winter Boots for Kids

This list includes solid everyday options for cold weather. They’re either waterproof or water-resistant, so they can handle puddles, slush, and the occasional snowy adventure without sacrificing natural movement.

Saguaro Boots

$109 | Size EU 25 – 36 | Water-resistant | KELLY15 for 15% off

Saguaro is one of the most affordable barefoot shoe brands, and we’ve been really happy with the quality for the price. The tradeoff is that you’ll usually see more budget-friendly synthetics rather than leather, wool, or higher-tech materials, and their waterproofing isn’t the most reliable—so these are generally better suited for dry winter climates. The Macaron boots (R) offer some water resistance, but my son’s feet ended up wet after this trudge through the creek. They’re fine in some lighter rain or snow, but doing something like this will mean a kid with wet feet. They do have a lugged sole that gives decent grip in winter conditions.

The Jumpy boots (L) are another solid option for cold, dry days. They have microfiber uppers, a cozy fleece lining, and the same flexible sole Saguaro uses on their casual kids’ shoes—sturdy toe bumper included, but not a ton of lugs. The side zipper makes them easy to get on and off, but the thicker lining reduces internal volume, making them a better match for kids with lower-volume feet.

Reima Loikkii and Hyppii Waterproof Boots

Price: $90+ | US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | Waterproof | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Loikkii waterproof barefoot boots for kids

Reima’s goal is to create high-quality clothes and shoes to allow kids to comfortably explore the outdoors, so I was excited when they started offering barefoot shoes. They now have several barefoot-friendly winter boot styles. Two winter boots that have held up to a lot of outdoor play are the Hyppii for toddlers and the Loikkii for bigger kids. The overall design is similar, but the Hyppii have a wide-opening velcro strap that my three-year-old can easily manage on his own. The Loikkii use elastic laces instead, which tighten down quickly and stay put.

The soles are thin, flexible, and zero drop, and both styles have more volume than some of Reima’s other barefoot models, which worked really well for my toddler’s chunkier feet. They kept his feet warm and dry in rain and light snow, and I love how kid-friendly they are for independent on and off.

The tradeoffs: the shorter shaft means water can drip in from the top if your child loves splashing or wading deeper than they should, and the fit runs narrower than many other barefoot brands. They’re a great option for narrow feet, but may not work for wider foot shapes.

Wildling Winter Boots

$100+ | EU20 – 38 | Water-resistant | Free Shipping Code for first-time customers: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildlings pack an impressive amount of warmth into an ultra-lightweight, ultra-flexible barefoot shoe. Their winter lineup uses natural, cozy materials—like wool or tightly woven cotton canvas—for the uppers, and every winter model includes an integrated polyester membrane for added moisture protection. Transitional styles usually come with a cotton lining, while the warmest models feature a felted wool lining for extra insulation. Wool is a fantastic winter material because it naturally insulates and repels moisture, making it ideal for both the outer fabric and inner lining of a cold-weather shoe.

Some Wildling models come pre-treated for water repellency, while others need a treatment added at home (you’ll find this noted in the Care section of each style). We treat Wildlings as water-resistant rather than fully waterproof—they handle light moisture just fine, but they’re not the pair you want for pouring rain or deep snow. Most winter Wildlings come with their cupped sole now, which means more protection from the higher rubber sole. Wildlings don’t really have lugs to speak of, so I wouldn’t recommend them for situations where you need a lot of grip.

Wildling barefoot shoes for kids and adults

BeLenka Kids Winter Boots

$105+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

BeLenka has long been one of the strongest brands for barefoot winter boots, for both kids and adults. They offer several waterproof and warm-lined options, often using natural materials like merino wool. Their Winter Kids boots are a great everyday pick for cold weather—a classic leather lace-up with a water-repellent membrane and cozy merino lining. They also maintain the flexibility and foot-shaped feel you expect from a true barefoot shoe, which is why we like them for daily wear.

If you need something a bit more rugged with extra warmth and grip, check out BeLenka’s newer models like the Zippu and Elio.

Shapen Winter Boots

$109 | Size EU 25 – 36 | Water-resistant | KELLY5 for 5% off

Shapen has a few great options for kids’ barefoot winter boots. The Shapen Frosty boots were my three-year-olds boot of choice last year. These are nylon slip-on boots with an elastic drawstring around the middle of the shaft so you can cinch them for a snug fit. The one drawback is that, without a zipper, they don’t open any wider. My toddler has thicker feet, so getting them on the first few times took a little maneuvering. Once we figured out the right angle, it was totally doable, and after they were on, he didn’t want to take them off.

The nylon is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so these work best as everyday cold-weather boots. They’re great for chilly walks and playground time, but not the pair I’d choose for snow drifts or full-on winter storms.

Shapen also has several leather hightop and boots that are also great for colder days. The Urbaneer high-top sneakers are easy to get on and secure with three velcro straps. For something more fashion forward, they have mini versions of some of their most popular boots, including the Maverick lace-up boots and the Victory Chelsea boots.

Shapen Kids Winter Sneakers

Feelgrounds Boots

$94+ | Size EU22 – 37 | Waterproof or Water-resistant | KELLY5 for 5% off

Feelgrounds Patrol Winter Boots for Kids

Feelgrounds made mini versions of their popular vegan boots, the Patrol Winter and the Chelsea Boots. I’ve loved my Feelgrounds for years because they have such a great fit with plenty of toe space, and the kids’ styles are no different.

The Kids’ Patrol Winter boots have a fleece lining and a waterproof membrane, so these are the more heavy duty option. The Chelsea boot is water-resistant, and we’ve loved it as a dressy winter option.

Freet Tufee Junior

$90 | EU29 – 38 | Water-resistant | Code KELLY for 10% off

The Freet Tufee Junior boots have been a great option for winter hiking. They’re lightweight, nicely flexible, and have a grippy tread that gives kids solid traction on trails and wintery conditions. The uppers are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so they hold up well to damp conditions but aren’t the pair I’d choose for deep snow or trudging through puddles (my son had to test this and. yes, his feet did get wet).

One thing I really like is how easy they are for kids to manage on their own—the bungee laces and velcro strap make it simple to get a secure fit without any fiddly tightening. Overall, they’re a practical, foot-shaped barefoot boot that keeps natural movement front and center while still offering enough protection for active cold-weather adventures.

KEEN Kids’ Howser II Waterproof Chukka

$80 | Size Little Kids’ 8 through Big Kids’ 7 | Waterproof

KEEN shoes have a reputation for offering a wider toe box (at least among the conventional shoe crowd), but they rarely make the cut for my barefoot shoe posts. Most styles still taper a bit more than I like, and many run on the stiffer side. The KEEN Kids’ Howser boots, though, were a pleasant surprise. These little winter boots can actually fold into a ball, which puts them right in line with the flexibility I expect from my favorite barefoot kids’ brands. This sole is different than most of KEEN’s other winter boots, so you probably won’t find this flexibility on other styles.

They’re also built for genuinely cold weather. The Howser boots are rated to -4°F/-20°C thanks to KEEN.Warm insulation, which is a lightweight, charcoal bamboo–based insulation. The uppers are made from durable, water-resistant nylon, and the inside is lined with soft microfleece to keep feet cozy. These are still a bit of a compromise option due to the toe box and 7mm heel-to-toe drop, but if you’re looking for something warm, easily accessible, and durable, these KEENs are a solid option. Since this is a bigger name brand, old styles can sometimes make their way down to outlet retailers; I’ve seen these KEEN Kids’ boots at Sierra for $30.

KEEN Howser Chukka flexible winter boots for kids

Best Barefoot Snow Boots for Kids

Snowshoeing in barefoot winter boots

While some of the everyday boots above could work in light snow, if your child is out in the snow every day, you’ll want a higher shaft, full waterproofing, and extra warmth. These snow boots are built for colder, wetter days—they’re often lined with fleece or insulation and designed to handle slush and deep snow. They may be a bit stiffer than everyday boots, but that tradeoff provides warmth, traction, and protection, all while keeping a foot-shaped, zero-drop design.

Koel Rana Tex Wool Boots

$113+ | Sizes EU 24 – 43 | Waterproof | Code KELLY for 10% off at PedTerra

Barefoot Snow Boots for Kids from Koel

The Koel Rana has been our standout favorite for both warmth and waterproofing. Koel makes a few versions of this boot, but the one with the thick merino wool lining is the real MVP—super warm without feeling heavy or bulky. My kids have worn these for everything from snowy hikes to creek play, and they’ve spent hours with their feet in cold water. The Aqua Stop Tex membrane does an impressive job keeping feet dry for extended periods, far better than most “water-resistant” kids’ boots.

Even with all that insulation and protection, the Rana stays surprisingly lightweight and flexible, so kids can still move naturally instead of clomping around in stiff snow boots. The sole has grippy lugs for traction in winter conditions, and the overall design keeps the natural, foot-shaped fit Koel is known for. These are a fantastic choice if you want a true winter-ready barefoot boot without the bulk.

If you’re in the US, I’d recommend checking PedTerra first as they have free shipping and free returns. Otherwise, you can shop directly online at Koel.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Boot AT

$100+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | BSG20 for 20% off

The Vivobarefoot Tracker Boot has long been a favorite for its combination of barefoot feel and real outdoor performance. The kids’ version keeps that same spirit, with a waterproof design, cozy faux shearling lining, and a felt insole for extra warmth. A wide velcro strap makes them easy to get on and off, while the bungee toggle at the top helps keep snow and moisture out. The outsole has 2mm lugs for traction and a durable rubber bumper that adds protection and helps keep water from seeping in. It’s a great balance of warmth, flexibility, and weather protection for winter adventures.

My code throughout the year is BSG20 for 20% off. I have a special boosted code through November for 25% off: THEBAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE25

BeLenka Ailo Snow Boots

$110+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | KELLY5 for 5% off

The BeLenka Ailo Junior snow boots have all the features you’d want: fully waterproof, warm fleece lining, and a new KidsThermoGrip outsole with good traction. The gusset under the velcro strap helps keep snow out, and they open wide so they’re easy to put on. The extra lining can mean they run a little small; I usually find the whole family sizes up for BeLenka’s winter boots.

Reima Ensilumi Snow Boots

Price: $90+ | US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | Waterproof | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima also released the Ensilumi, a barefoot snow boot for kids this year, but most sizes sold out super quickly! These are Reima’s warmest option, rated down to -20 °C (-4° F), with a waterproof membrane and taller shaft.

Ten Little Snow Boots

$59 | Toddler Sizes 6 – 13 | Water-resistant

These Ten Little snow boots are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so they’re best for light snow play or quick outings. When I tested them under running water, some moisture did make its way inside, which confirmed they’re not built for long, wet days or deep snow.

On the plus side, they’re nicely foot-shaped and spacious enough for thick socks, the soles are flat, and the full velcro opening makes them very easy to get on and off. They’re not super flexible due to the thicker sole and deeper lugs, but that’s a tradeoff I’m comfortable with in a true winter boot. The fleece lining also adds a good bump of warmth.

Overall, the fit and design are solid, but they’d need a fully waterproof membrane to function as a true snow boot.

Ten Little Minimalist Snow Boots for kids

How to make barefoot winter boots warmer for kids

Warmth can be a challenge in winter boots, barefoot or not. Because barefoot soles are thinner, kids can sometimes feel the cold creep in from underneath. Some brands include warmer insoles, but if you live in a really cold climate, it’s often worth adding your own or swapping in something extra cozy, like wool or sheepskin. Since barefoot shoes all have slightly different shapes, I usually buy a larger insole and trim it down for the best fit. Here are the insoles I’ve used:

DIY Wool Insoles | 6mm | $15 for sheet | While you can get insoles that fit specific barefoot shoe brands, you can also DIY wool insoles. Grab a sheet of 100% felt wool, trace the existing insole where you want to add a wool insole, and cut your own.

Sheepskin insole | These sheepskin insoles take up a lot of space, so they’re best for low volume feet or if you already sized up in the boots. The sheepskin will compress over time, so it may end up starting to feel a little loose after more wear. Since these don’t have a wide toe box, I ordered the biggest size and cut mine to the preferred shape.

Final Thoughts

Finding truly foot-friendly winter boots for kids can feel like a scavenger hunt, especially when you want warmth, weather protection, and a natural fit all in one package. The good news is that there are now more solid options than ever, whether you need an everyday boot for chilly walks, a waterproof pair for soggy play, or a rugged snow boot that can keep up with serious winter adventures.

As always, the right choice comes down to your child’s foot shape, your climate, and how (and where) your kid actually plays outside. Prioritize a foot-shaped toe box, a flat and flexible sole, and materials that match your weather. From there, you can layer in warmth, waterproofing, and the features that matter most to your family.

With the right pair of barefoot winter boots, your child can stay warm, comfortable, and moving naturally all winter long—and that’s the whole point.

Keep your feet warm and comfortable this winter with this round-up of the best everyday barefoot winter boots. This list focuses on casual, stylish options for colder weather.

Winter is here (or it’s coming shortly) and you need some winter boots. Barefoot winter boots, to be a little more specific. Colder weather doesn’t mean you have to revert to overly thick, clunky and pointy boots. There are plenty of barefoot boots that look great, keep your feet warm, and are made for natural function.

Depending on where you live, winter can mean anything from a sunny day in the mid-60s (hello Southern California) to putting on every layer you own to face the blizzard outside your door. Since it can be hard to cover all scenarios in one post, I decided to break them out into a few different ones. This post is focused on the best everyday barefoot winter boots, which means casual and stylish options that are warm and water-resistant. So, you could wear them on that 60Fs day, but equally be prepped for something much colder when you pair them with thick wool socks and an extra warm woolly insole.

I’m here to be your guide as you navigate your foot health journey and the process of finding the best barefoot boots for you. This curated list features the best options I’ve found over the years of wearing barefoot shoes.

The first half includes the the boots I reach for again and again. The second half of the list has great options too, but I don’t find myself reaching for them quite as often. But, that doesn’t mean they won’t

Most of these boots are unisex, so hopefully you’ll find something you like whether you’re looking for men’s or women’s barefoot winter boots.

Rugged outsoles of barefoot winter boots

What I look for in barefoot winter boots

My reviews on barefoot shoes are focused on these main criteria:

1 Wide, foot-shaped Toe Box — Look for shoes that fit the natural shape of the foot. Most conventional shoes taper in the toe box, which squishes the toes together. Feet are widest at the toes, and shoes should reflect that.

2 Flat aka zero-drop — There shouldn’t be any heel-to-toe drop. A flat shoe allows a child to stand in a natural, neutral position.

3 Thin, Flexible Soles — Soles should provide protection, but still allow for a sensory connection to the ground beneath and easy movement.

4 Warmth and Protection  — When it comes to winter boots, I look to strike a balance between the thinness and the flexibility of the sole with the need to have a boot that provides warmth and protection. There is more variability when it comes to the stack height and flexibility of barefoot shoes, so I’ll note that in each of my reviews.

Conventional boots vs barefoot boots
Conventional boots with tapered toe boxes and stiff, heeled soles vs Barefoot boots with a wide, foot-shaped toe box and flat and flexible soles

Adding warmth to your barefoot winter boots

The two best things you can do to add more warmth to your winter boots is to wear wool socks and add thermal or sheepskin insoles.

Waterproofing your boots

Many of these boots are made with waterproof or water-resistant materials, or may have a water-resistant treatment pre-applied. To maintain the water-resistance or waterproofness of your boots, you’ll likely need to periodically reapply the treatment. For canvas, use this waterproof spray for canvas. For leather, use Otter Wax or NikWax.

Best Barefoot Winter Boots for everyday

Best Everyday Barefoot Boots for Winter

Alright, let’s get to the list! This top portion is my picks for the best barefoot winter boots. They’re the brands I reach for again and again and wear winter after winter. Plus, they’re reasonably easy to order (and return) for most of my readers that are based in the US and Europe.  Find a few more additional options at the end of this post.

Vivobarefoot Boots

Leather uppers | Waterproof options | Rugged outsole options for hiking

Price: From $168 – $200 | Code: BSG20 for 20% off

Sizes: Kid’s to Men’s US15/EU49

Best For: narrow to medium width, low to average volume

Discount Code: BSG20

What I love:

  • Well-made with high-quality materials
  • On-trend design
  • Focus on sustainability
  • 100 day trial period

What I don’t:

  • More expensive

Uppers: Most boots use wildhide leather or suede

Location + Shipping: UK-based, offer worldwide shipping | Manufacturing location: Most styles made in Vietnam or Portugal

Vivobarefoot has two types of boots: its lifestyle boots and its outdoor and hiking boots. I absolutely love both, but since this post is focused more on everyday wear, I’ll be talking about the lifestyle Gobi boot line. This year, you can get a high-top lace up combat boot, a chelsea boot for women, and a desert boot for men.

The first thing I have to talk about is the buttttery soft leather on these Vivobarefoot boots, especially the new Gobi high-top boot. With an unlined shaft, these have the flexibility of a high-top sneaker with more of the polish and style of a boot.

I think the styling is on-point with these new versions of the Gobi boots as they mimic the chunky look that’s so popular now, but maintain a flat and very flexible sole.  I also appreciate the trending Limestone color option for women. This reads as a cool off-white/greige. I tried to show true color in the photos here.

The Chelsea boots are easy to slip-on and comfortable to wear. They have more of a utilitarian vibe with the chunkier sole and extra panels around the edge. If prefer more of a simple and clean aesthetic, check out the Geo Chelsea Boots.

Fit & Sizing: Vivobarefoot shoes run on the narrower end of barefoot shoe brands. They fit narrow to medium width best. The men’s shoes starting at EU40 run a few millimeters wider than the women’s. Some of the shoes and outdoor/hiking boots are better for lower volume feet, but I found the newer Gobi styles to fit comfortably over my higher instep. They fit true to size. For me, that’s an EU38 and for Aaron that’s an EU43.

Xero Shoes Breckenridge and Denver

Leather uppers | Women’s US 5 – Men’s US 15 | $120 – $160

Xero Shoes Breckenridge barefoot leather boots

What I love:

  • Lugged soles with good grip
  • Simple, everyday designs

What I don’t:

  • Runs narrower
  • Materials don’t feel as high quality

The Xero Shoes Breckenridge has been my favorite boot from the brand from the last few years.  It’s clean and simple, and very lightweight. While Xero Shoes does run narrower overall, this style in particular feels a little wider, and they’ve fit my medium width feet comfortably. The Denver is a similar style in the Men’s sizes.

Groundies

Price:  $140 – $210 | Sizes: EU 36 – 47 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

Best For: narrow to extra wide feet, medium volume

What I love:

  • Range of stylish options
  • Regular barefoot and barefoot+ line for extra wide feet

What I don’t:

  • May not be warm and waterproof enough for harsher weather conditions
  • Outsole has shallow lugs and not slip-resistant

Uppers: leather and suede

Location + Shipping: Free shipping and returns from the US website. For international orders, shipping is €9.95 or less within Europe.

Groundies has some of the most stylish barefoot winter boots, and now they’re easier to order with the new US website. They also have a range of fits, from narrow to extra wide. This brand has three different fits:

  • regular fit: a traditionally tapered toe box, so I don’t recommend these
  • Barefoot fit: a foot-shaped shoe that fits narrow to medium width feet
  • Barefoot+ fit: a foot-shaped shoe that fits wide to extra wide feet

When you shop on the Groundies website, make sure you filter for the barefoot and barefoot+ styles. Groundies Barefoot+ fit is one of the best options for extra wide barefoot shoes, so those with wider feet can still pull on a pair of their cute Camden Chelsea boots.

The Groundies original barefoot line has more options for barefoot winter boots, includingg slip-on boots like the thickly lined Cozy boots, lace-up boots, and several more rugged, all-terrain pairs. You can opt for a more casual look with a pair of faux-wool lined tennis shoes (I love the Chuck-Taylor styling of the Manhattan), or go for something a little more dressy with a pair of the Derby tall boots.

Fit & Sizing: The fit and sizing of your Groundies boot will depending on 1) barefoot or barefoot+ fit and 2) the outsole type. The barefoot+ line runs 7-10mm wider than the original barefoot line, and a few millimeters wider. Most outsoles I find run true to size, though the GS1 sole runs a little long. I wear an EU37 in tennis shoes for these, but stick with my regular EU size 38 in winter to account for thicker socks.

Also note that Groundies boots do come in separate men’s and women’s sizing.

Be Lenka

Price: $149 – $199 | Code: KELLY5 for 5% off on BeLenka

Sizes: Kids to EU47

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Discount Code: KELLY5

What I love:

  • Large selection of boot styles and colors
  • High-quality materials
  • Wider, bean-shaped toe box for wide splay

What I don’t:

  • Soles can be stiffer than other brands
  • More expensive

Uppers: Leather | Models: Slip-on, Lace-up, Knee-high boots

Location + Shipping: Offer worldwide shipping | Manufacturing location: EU countries of Slovakia, Czechia and Portugal

Be Lenka has one of the most extensive collections of barefoot winter boots and continues to add more. If warmth is your priority, opt for the wool-lined Winter Boots 2.0 or the sheepskin lined Polaris slip-on boots. There are several lace-up boots that don’t feature an additional lining, so they’re best for mild to moderate winters (like the Nevada and Ranger). Be Lenka also has a snow boot for women.

Be Lenka’s boots are more structured, so they can feel on the bulkier and stiffer end of the barefoot shoes spectrum. Most of the soles have a deeper lug pattern which is good for slippery conditions.

Fit & Sizing: After some trial and error, I generally recommend people size up in Be Lenka’s winter boots. I have plenty of space in my Be Lenka EU38 sneakers but find the boots running a little shorter. This is especially true for models like the fully lined Winter Boots 2.0. The boots are wide and roomy overall, so they’re a great option for wider, higher volume feet.  Most BeLenka boots are unisex, but there are some women’s specific styles.

BeLenka Ranger Boots are barefoot boots for hiking and winter

Lems

Price: $150 – $185 | Sizes: Women’s US5 – Men’s US15

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

What I love:

  • Rugged boots that work for casual wear and outdoors
  • Roomy toes, but don’t look super wide
  • Waterproof and vegan options

What I don’t:

  • Waterproofing doesn’t always hold up
  • Previously sizing was inconsistent (but it’s gotten much better)

Uppers: Leather, Nylon

Location + Shipping: Based in the US, flat rate $5.95 US Shipping and free returns. See shipping info for international countries here .

Lems is headquartered in Boulder, CO, and most of their styles fit that outdoorsy vibe. I like that they work for a day out hiking just as much as a day walking around town.

A lot of the same features that landed Lems Shoes at the top of my best barefoot shoes for beginners list makes them an excellent winter option. Lems boots have around a 10mm sole which is thicker than most minimalist option. But, the shoes use air-injection rubber, so it’s still super lightweight. This extra separation from the ground can be helpful in colder conditions. Plus, they have a few grippy options, including the Boulder Summit and the new Boulder Grip.

If you need a rugged Chelsea boot, there’s no better option than the Lems Chelsea (similar to Blundstones, but you can keep all of your toes intact).

Note that Lems does not offer coupon codes, but does occasionally hold sales around holidays.

Find a full brand review of Lems here, including a mini review of each boot style.

Fit & Sizing: Lems previously had quite a bit of variation in their sizing among their different styles, but thankfully it’s become much more true to size with these newer 2023 styles. I generally find that I’m a half size up in the boots to leave a little extra room for thicker socks. I’m a size US7.5 in most Lems shoes and a US8 in the new Lems boot sizing (so that goes for the Lems Boulder Boot Waterproof Grip). The boots are unisex, and there is no difference in the size or width of the boots listed on the men’s or women’s pages.

Lems Boulder Summit Boots are minimalist hiking boots with a rugged tread

Wildling Shoes

Price: From $100 – 150 | Sizes: Toddler through EU48/US Men’s 13.5

Best For: narrow to medium width feet, medium to high volume

What I love:

  • As close to barefoot as possible with flexible sole and uppers
  • Sustainable, innovative materials that are warm and water-resistant
  • Many styles with cozy wool lining
  • Unique style

What I don’t:

  • Winter shoes can be hard to waterproof
  • Edges of sole can separate

Uppers: Most winter styles are water-resistant cotton canvas or wool

Location + Shipping: Based in Germany with worldwide shipping. Use code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE for first-time customers. Returns for first-time customers are free.

Wildling shoes are designed with these three requirements in mind: freedom of movement, sustainable materials, and fair production. With freedom of movement a key focus, these are not going to be your heavy-duty winter boots. But even so, they do an impressive job of protecting your feet from the cold and wet weather given just how lightweight and flexible they are.

The winter line uses warm, natural materials like wool or tightly woven cotton canvas for the uppers.  All winter models feature an integrated polyester membrane that helps protect against moisture. The transitional weather models typically have a cotton lining, while the warmest models have a felted wool lining.

Some Wildling shoes have a waterproofing treatment pre-applied, while others do not. This information is included in the Care section for each style.

Fit & Sizing: Wildling shoes tend to fit those best with narrow to medium width feet and more of a square toe shape. They are typically too narrow to fit those with extra wide feet, though some people do size up for more room. The printable FitKits are very helpful for determining your correct size, though actual size can vary slightly among styles. I typically opt for my usual size EU38. Aaron wears a US10.5/EU44 in his Wildling shoes.

Wildling Tejo fall and winter barefoot shoes

Mukishoes

Price:  €120 – 170  | Sizes: EU 36 – 48 | Code KELLYMUKI for 10% off

Best For: narrow to medium width feet, medium to high volume

Discount Code: KELLYMUKI for 10% off

What I love:

  • Sustainable materials and manufacturing processes
  • Very soft and flexible
  • Classic boot colors plus several colorful high-top styles

What I don’t:

  • Can run out of stock and don’t restock to following season/year with focus on slow fashion
  • Boots are on the narrower end
  • No membrane or waterproofing

Uppers: Most winter styles are leather or felted wool (in prior years, cork leather was also used)

Location + Shipping: Based in Portugal with worldwide shipping. Shipping is €7.72 in the EU and €26 to the US.  Use code KELLYMUKI for 10% off.

A classic Chelsea boot and a combat boot head the line-up to Mukishoes’ barefoot winter boots. Both of these currently come in leather (black and caramel) with a burel warm lining to make them extra toasty. In previous years these styles came in cork leather (shown in photos).

Mukishoes also has a few high-top sneakers geared towards winter, which usually utilize deadstock fabrics as part of their mission of sustainability and fair fashion. This year, the Faro high-top uses a deadstock felted wool in a punchy orangey-red.

While you’ll get natural water-resistance from the leather uppers, these boots do not have a membrane or waterproofing. They’re best for moderate winters without a lot of moisture.

Fit & Sizing: The Mukishoes winter boots for adults run narrow and a little short. I have both the Chelsea boots and the combat boots (Igneous) in an EU38. This works for the combat boots, but as the foot can slide around a little bit more in Chelsea boots, they feel a little short in front. If I were to order these again, I’d likely opt for a size up. I’ve compared the Chelsea boots to several other brands in the same size and they run short in comparison as well.

Sizing starts at EU36 for adults, but the Chelsea boots come in kid’s sizing as well, which starts at EU24. These can be a great option for adults with smaller feet who don’t want to be stuck with kid’s styles!

These fit those with narrow feet best. They can work for those with medium width feet, but you may need to size up.

Shapen

Price:  €129 – 159  | Sizes: EU35 – 47 | Code BFSHOEGUIDE5 for 5% off

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Code: BFSHOEGUIDE5 for 5% off

What I love:

  • Stylish designs
  • Accommodating for wider feet and higher volume
  • Soft, flexible and warm

What I don’t:

  • Outsole has shallow lugs and not slip-resistant
  • No membrane or additional waterproofing

Uppers: Water-resistant, but not waterproof. Most uppers are hydrophobic leather or suede.

Location + Shipping: Based in Slovakia. Shoes made in the EU. Shoes shipped to most EU countries is 6 – 14. UK and US shipping is 25. No returns accepted outside of the EU. Use code BFSHOEGUIDE5 for 5% off.

If you’ve already heard about Shapen, it was likely for the brand’s popular line of women’s barefoot dress shoes and sandals like the Poppy or Lily. Last year they released a winter boot that turned out to be one of my most worn all season.

The Shapen Cozy boot was one of those shoes that felt like a perfect fit from first wear. It’s really lightweight, really flexible, and really warm. The uppers are oiled nubuck with water-resistant properties, and the inside is lined with wool. I was comfortable wearing them in temperatures down to 20F with a pair of mid weight wool socks.

The outsole has a dot pattern to give it some grip, but these don’t have deep lugs specifically designed for traction, so they’re not the best option in icy conditions.

The Cozy boots also come in smooth leather. Shapen has expanded their barefoot winter boot collection for 2023, so there are now a few more styles to choose from. The Urbaneer is a stylish, high-top combat boot that would be great for both men or women. The fluffy is a good replacement for an Ugg-type boot, the divine is a dressy Chelsea boot, and the Frosty looks more like a utilitarian snow boot.

Fit & Sizing: With my foot length of 23.3cm, I opted for an EU38 in Shapen’s lined winter boots. According to the size guide, this gives me 1.7cm of extra length, which is about what I need for a lined boot. For unlined shoes, I aim for about 1.2cm of extra space. In the Shapen sneakers (unlined), I wear an EU37.

Shapen winter barefoot boots

Feelgrounds

Price:  $139 – 159 | Sizes: EU35 – 49 | Code KELLY% for 5% off

Best For: medium to wide feet, medium to high volume

Code: KELLY5 for 5% off

What I love:

  • Vegan option for those that want the leather-look
  • Continuously improving their shoes based on customer feedback
  • Winter boot is waterproof and fleece-lined

What I don’t:

  • Sole is stiffer than other options
  • While Polyurethane leather is a vegan option, it’s not the most sustainable

Uppers: Faux leather uppers. Patrol winter is waterproof.

Location + Shipping: Based in Germany. Shipping via UPS or FedEx to most countries and calculated at checkout. Current shipping to US is about $22. Returns are available using $15 pre-paid return shipping label, or use the shipping provider of your choice.

When you need a true winter boot that is fully waterproof with a membrane, gusseted tongue, lined with fleece and vegan to boot, look no further than Feelgrounds. Since they released the Patrol winter boots several years ago, they’ve continued to make improvements that have resulted in a serious barefoot winter boot.

My Feelgrounds sneakers are some of the most flexible ones I own, but in contrast the boots are a bit stiffer. This isn’t all bad as it’s from a few more centimeters of thickness in the sole that provides extra insulation from the cold ground. The outsoles have sufficient tread to provide grip during wintery conditions.

If your winters are milder, the Patrol also comes in an unlined version. Feelgrounds also offers a cute Chelsea boot in several colors, including a trendy cream hue.

Lang.S Kombat Boots

Leather | EU36-45 | €160  | Code KELLY for 10% off

Lang.S Kombat, Wide Toe Box Combat boots

If you’ve been searching for the perfect replacement for heavy, chunky combat boots, then this wide toe box option from Lang.S preserves so much of the style, but gives you way more comfort. The toe box is roomy and they are zero-drop, but there is some trade off here with groundfeel due to the 7.5mm rubber soles. They’re surprising flexible for how thick they look, and that’s because a lot of the height comes from the lugs. These barefoot combat boots come in black, brown and white with a side zip for easy on. Lang.S shoes usually run large for me, so I have these in EU38 for my 23.3cm feet (I often size up to EU39 for boots, but with this brand I’m a 37 in sneakers). The insole is topped with leather and feels slippery to me, so I flipped it over to the felted side to stop my feet from shifting in the boots.

More Barefoot Winter Boots for Everyday

If you’ve made it to this part of the post and didn’t quite find what you’re looking for yet, hopefully you’ll find a better fit among these additional options . We all value something a little different in our shoes, and the great thing about more brands entering the barefoot shoe space is that there is now more to choose from.

Aintap/Feelbarefoot on Etsy

Leather and suede | Children’s US 8 – Men’s US 17| $100 – $125 | Code KELLY50 for 50% of retail

Getting bored of the basic colors like black and brown? Spice your shoe closet up with a colorful boot from the Feelbarefoot Shop on Etsy. They have a wide selection of colored leather and suede to choose from on styles like Chelsea boots, combat boots and chukkas. For winter, I recommend adding the 2mm rubber bottom to the leather sole. These boots are not lined or waterproof.

Angles Fashion

Leather | winter wool-lined option | water-resistant | EU33-47 | $181 – $205

Angles Fashion (and it’s sister brand Crave) is a barefoot shoe brand based in Czechia that mostly focuses on chic urban leather shoes. Since the uppers are leather, they are naturally water-resistant, but there is no additional membrane to make them waterproof. Some of their boots do come with additional lining. I found Angles to run small for both men’s and women’s boots and shoes, so I recommend sizing up.

Angles Fashion Nemesis Chelsea Boots | Leather barefoot chelsea boots

Freet

Leather | water-resistant | EU37-48 | $165 | Code KELLY for 10% off

For a boot design that offers a more rugged look with the specs to match, check out the Freet Tundra. The deeper tread will have you crossing through mud and slush with no problem. The leather uppers are naturally water-resistant. Try NikWax to maintain the water-resistant performance.

Code: KELLY for 10% off

Ahinsa

Faux Leather | water-resistant | EU37-46 | €199 – €260

Ahinsa has been busy expanding its line of vegan barefoot winter boots. These boots are incredibly lightweight with a thin and flexible sole. They also have a pretty wide and roomy toe box, so these are another brand that is good for those wide and extra wide feet. For a fully-lined barefoot combat boot with a convenient side zipper, try the Jaya Winter Zip-Up boots.

Saguaro

Textile uppers | EU36-48 | $50 – $85 using code KELLY15

It can be difficult to find affordable barefoot shoes, especially barefoot winter boots. Saguaro Shoes offers a few winter styles that are barefoot-friendly and budget-friendly. The Will winter shoes clock in around $50 and use water-resistant textile uppers, a faux fur lining, and feature the same grippy sole as many of their water shoes. The Ambition is a more traditional looking boot, but will cost about $85 using the code KELLY15.

Tips for finding more affordable barefoot winter boots

Winter boots are typically one of the most expensive types of footwear and barefoot shoes are already expensive. One expensive thing plus another leads to….an expensive barefoot boot.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a good deal. You can find a list of the most affordable barefoot shoe brands here. And these are some tips for finding more affordable options.

Use these evergreen discount codes: I have a discount code for most barefoot shoe brands, so be sure to check here first before making a purchase.

Check for sales: I have seasonal blog posts that round-up the best current sales. You can also stay in the loop about any current barefoot shoe sales in my Instagram stories. There has also been a few instances of barefoot shoes popping up at some discount online retailers. For example, Sierra.com had a large selection of Vivobarefoot shoes for 50% off, and some BeLenka boots popped up on Marshalls.com.

Join Barefoot Shoe buy/sell/trade Facebook groups: One of the best places to find used barefoot shoes are the buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook. The groups listed below are pretty active, so they’re worth keeping an eye on or putting out a request to see if someone is willing to sell.

  • Minimalist Shoe Buy/Sell/Trade (USA)
  • KIDS Minimalist/Barefoot Shoes BUY/SELL/TRADE (USA)
  • Europe Buy/Sell/Trade Minimalist, Barefoot Shoes

Other resale platforms: Check out other popular resale apps for cheap barefoot shoes, like Poshmark and Mercari. The brands I see most often on these apps are Altra, Vivobarefoot, Vibram Five Finger, and Merrell’s minimalist Vapor Gloves line.

Ditch the uncomfortable heels and pointy toes! These barefoot Chelsea boots feature a wide, foot-shaped toe box and a thin, flat and flexible sole.

Chelsea boots are a classic for a reason– they’re versatile to style and easy to pull on. Many conventional Chelsea boots feature thick platform soles or chunky heels. While these may be what is trending at the moment, they’re not that great for our feet or our body. For some options that are more foot-friendly, check out barefoot Chelsea boots!

2022 seemed to be the year of Chelsea Boots in the barefoot shoe world. So many barefoot brands released a Chelsea Boot for the first time, and I tested and reviewed a lot of them. They’ve clearly been popular as I’ve been adding to and updating this list with new additions in 2023 and 2024.

Many barefoot shoes are unisex, but a few of these Chelsea boots are only available in smaller sizes or listed as women’s.

Here you can see the difference between a conventional Chelsea boot and a barefoot Chelsea boot:

Conventional Chelsea Boots compared to Barefoot Chelsea Boots

Here’s what to look for in Barefoot Chelsea Boots:

Wide toe box — The toe box should be wide, allowing your toes to naturally splay. This means that your big toe can lie straight, so the toe box is either straight or splay out at the big toe. This is one of the most noticeable differences between a barefoot chelsea boot and a conventional boot, which typically has a narrower, pointed, symmetrical toe box. To see a side-by-side comparison of the width of these boots, check out the photos at the end of the post.

Flat — The sole of the shoe should zero-drop, or flat. Chelsea boots tend to have very thick soles or a chunky heel.

Thin & Flexible — The focus on barefoot shoes is allowing the foot to function naturally, which includes a thin and flexible sole so the foot can easily move and bend. A stiff sole is usually pretty standard in boots, which forces us to change our walking gait to compensate for the lack of flexibility in the sole.

Sizing Reference

For most of these shoes, I’ll provide a sizing reference based on my experience with the fit. Read more on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I’m most often a US7.5/EU38 in my barefoot shoes, but often times I size up in barefoot boots to accommodate for thicker socks. My feet are medium width and measure 23.3cm long. I typically look for shoes with an extra 1.2cm of space.

Width Comparison for Barefoot Chelsea Boots

Understanding the width of a brand and a style can be a good place to start finding the right barefoot Chelsea Boot for you. These are organized how I find them narrowest to widest–they can vary a bit with style and sole type.

Width comparison barefoot Chelsea boots

Water-resistant and Waterproof options

I note on each of the boots below which ones are water-resistant or waterproof. Since most of them are leather, they are naturally water-resistant. You can improve this by regularly waxing your boots. This also conditions and improves the lifespan of the leather. The only fully waterproof barefoot Chelsea boots on this list that have a separate membrane are the Lems Chelsea boots.

Stylish Leather Barefoot Chelsea Boots

Vivobarefoot Gobi Chelsea Boots

Leather | EU35 – 43 | Lined and unlined versions | $190 | Code BSG20 for 20% off

Vivobarefoot has an urban take on the classic Chelsea boot. The newest version of the Gobi Chelsea Boot is coming in Fall 2024. So far, it will come in dark brown with a gum sole, with both unlined and warm lined options. These Vivobareboot boots have a 4mm sole with a 3mm cork and foam removable insole. The sole is flat, but the outer rubber comes up at the back to give it a look of a heel. The leather is naturally water repellant, but there is not a separate membrane.

Fit & Sizing: Overall, Vivobarefoot fit narrow to medium feet best and tend to have a lower volume fit. I find Vivobarefoot shoes and boots to be true to size, which is usually EU38 for me. You can measure your feet and compare to the size chart, or use the StrutFit app on Vivo’s website that scans your feet from your phone’s camera and recommends a size.

BeLenka Chelsea Boots

Leather | sizes EU36-43| Lined and unlined options |$179 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

BeLenka Entice barefoot winter boots

BeLenka has an extensive line of barefoot boots, including several styles of barefoot Chelsea boots. The Entice boot comes in leather or suede, and is lined with a fleece, including a removable fleece insole. The sole is 4mm and has the shape is the same as BeLenka’s other boots, but doesn’t have as deep of a lug pattern on the sole.

The Mojo is a new 2023 style with a knitted, stretchy fabric collar, which makes them very easy to pull on and off and very soft around the ankles. This boot also uses one of BeLenka’s newer outsoles, which it calls the Ergogrip.

The uppers don’t have any special treatment or membrane, but the leather uppers are naturally water-resistant.

Fit & Sizing: For BeLenka’s fleece-lined winter boots, I usually recommend going up a size. Based on my 23.3cm foot measurement, the size EU39 fits best for these BeLenka Chelsea Boots. The fleece lining is fairly minimal, but does still take up some length and volume, so it makes these shoes best for low to medium volume feet. For reference, I wear an EU38 in the unlined Nevada boots and EU39 in the Mojo Chelsea Boots.

Groundies Chelsea Boots

Leather, Vegan | 33-47 | $140 | Extra Wide Options | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

Groundies Barefoot Chelsea Boots

Groundies has a huge selection of on-trend shoes in barefoot styles for both men and women, including this several barefoot Chelsea boot styles. The style pictured above is the Sienna, which has nubuck leather uppers and a rubber edging for durability.  The soles are still thin and flexible, but have a faux side wall that makes them appear thicker like a more conventional boot.

Other great Chelsea boot option from Groundies is the Camden with a taller shaft, which comes in both their regular barefoot fit, and their extra wide Barefoot+ fit.

You can purchase Groundies directly from their website while some styles are available on Amazon in the US.

Fit & Sizing: Groundies has several different sole styles, so fit & sizing differs a bit depending on the type of sole. The Sienna boots have the GS1 sole with 3 mm base, but a faux side wall makes them appear a bit taller. The GS1 soles run a little longer compared to the other sole type (GO1 sole). The EU38 in the Sienna boot is a good fit for my 23.3cm foot measurement as I can wear a bit thicker socks, and even add a warmer insole. I’m an EU38 in the GO1 sole, which includes boots like the Camden.

Shapen Chelsea Boot

Leather | EU35 – 44 | | $149 | Code  BFSHOEGUIDE5 for 5% off

Shapen Barefoot Chelsea boots for women

Shapen is known for making stylish barefoot dress shoes and sandals for women, so it was exciting to see them create a line of beautiful barefoot boots this season, including several pairs of Chelsea Boots. The Divine Chelsea Boot (pictured above) uses smooth leather apps and comes in brown, cream and black. They feature a buck that gives them a riding boot feel.

Another favorite of mine from their 2024 collection was the new Shapen Victory (pictured below), which features a taller shaft.

On a spectrum, SHAPEN is on the “very barefoot” end of things as the toe box is wide and naturally-shaped. It accommodates wide and even extra wide feet, depending on the style. The soles for the boots are 5.5mm thin and very flexible. They provide decent insulation while still being very flexible.

These boots do not have any additional inner lining, so they feel a little big compared to all the other styles as I still opted for an EU38. The length feels good with thicker socks, but there is a lot more volume that I needed to fill with an extra insole. This style can accommodate wide, high volume feet. If you plan on wearing these without thick socks or insoles, I recommend sizing down (for me that would’ve been the EU37).

See a review of all Shapen barefoot boots here, including an UGG-style boot called the Fluffy.

Feelbarefoot on Etsy Chelsea Boots

Leather | US W3 – 16.5 | Customizable | $121 using code KELLY50

Feelbarefoot Chelsea Boots | Leather barefoot Chelsea boots on Etsy

The FeelBarefoot Store on Etsy sells leather barefoot shoes handmade in Turkey including these dressier Chelsea boots. They offer a large range of sizes and customizations, so they’re a great brand if you’ve had a hard time finding the right fit. Use the code KELLY50 for a 50% discount.

I love the simple, classic styling of their barefoot Chelsea boots. Plus, they come in a whole rainbow of colors like pink, red and silver. Since barefoot shoes are still fairly niche, most boots are neutral colors like black and brown. Here, you can get them in almost any color.

The soles are leather with an option to add a 2cm rubber outsole. I highly recommend adding the rubber outsole as the leather sole is pretty slick to start off with. Overall, the rubber improves the grip and helps the shoes last longer. Because these have a leather sole, they are stiffer than most rubber barefoot shoe soles, but still offer reasonable movement.

The FeelBarefoot Etsy store also sells leather oxfords, lace up boots, slip ons, and offers some of the styles with a full rubber sole as well.

See my video review here.

Fit & Sizing: I found the sizing chart accurate. I opted for a size US7.5/EU38 with a 23.3cm foot length. I have medium width feet and I feel like I have enough space overall, including the toe box. The Etsy shop lists sizes US Women’s 3 to 16.5, but I’ve heard they’ll work with you on different sizing and even widths.

Wildling Chelsea Boots

Hemp and Wool Uppers | EU 36-48 | $149 | Free shipping code: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Bruklin wool Chelsea boots

The softest and most barefoot option on the list, the Bruklin is a brand new style from Wildling. The uppers are made from a blend of hemp and wool. These Chelsea boots feature Wildlings newer shell sole that are better for wet weather thanks to the taller sidewalls. Though these are not vegan, they do not feature any leather.  These do not come with a separate insole, but you can order a wool one from Wildling to help with warmth and adjust the volume and cushion.

Fit & Sizing: I found these to run true to size. I wear a size EU 38 for my 23.3cm foot measurement. Wildling also has a printable fit kit to help you get the right size.

Mukishoes Chelsea Boots

Leather or Vegan Cork | EU 24 – 48 | $101 – $122 | Code KELLYMUKI for 10% off

Mukishoes Chelsea Cork Boots | Sustainable Vegan barefoot chelsea boots

The Mukishoes Chelsea boots come in a few different uppers including smooth leather, suede, and a vegan option out of cork leather. Mukishoes places sustainability at the forefront of their product development, and in additional to using sustainable vegan products, they try to use headstock fabric for the inner lining.

These boots are super lightweight and flexible. These are available for both adults and kids, so there is a large size range. Pricing depends on the upper materials.

Fit & Sizing: I opted for the EU38 and these fit me well with thinner socks. These Mukishoes boots fit narrower and medium width feet best.

Magical Shoes Lupino Boots

Suede or faux leather | EU 35-47 | $149 | Code KELLY for 10% off

Magical Shoes Lupino Barefoot Chelsea Boots

The Lupino Chelsea Boots by Magical Shoes are a very soft and flexible boot. They come in either sueded leather uppers in grey, black, green, brown and burgundy or a black vegan faux leather. The soles are 6.5mm, made with the brand’s “Magical Rubber” that is super flexible. The boots have a felt lining inside to make them soft and a little warmer.

Fit and sizing: I ended up going with a size EU 39, which is one size up from my typical size. I tried both the 38s and the 39s, so I was able to compare and see which size fit best. See a video comparison of sizing on Instagram.

Based on the length, I thought I’d be in between a size EU 38 and 39. The 38s fit my ankles and overall foot really well, but the extra space was in the heel instead of in front of the toes. These shoes curve out at the back a bit more compared to other boots I’ve worn. My foot was pushed slightly forward, and on the 38s I could feel my toe hitting the edge on my longer foot (which is about 233mm). This doesn’t seem to be a big issue, but likely part of the reason I needed to size up.

With the 39s I have a little extra room around my ankles and instep, but also enough room for socks and the right amount of space in front of my toes.

Angles Fashion Chelsea Boots

Leather | winter wool-lined option | 33-47 | $181 – $205

Angles Fashion Nemesis Chelsea Boots | Leather barefoot chelsea boots

Angles Fashion is a Czech barefoot shoe brand that mostly focuses on chic urban leather shoes. They have two different barefoot Chelsea Boot styles: the Nemesis and the NYX. Both are available in 3 colors: black, a darker nut brown, and a warmer cognac brown.

Since the uppers are leather, they are naturally water-resistant, but there is no additional membrane to make them waterproof.

Sole is 3mm rubber and zero-drop. It rolls up easily into a ball, but is harder to twist or fold lengthwise. It’s feels heavier or firmer compared to some other barefoot shoes with similar some thickness, but still decently flexible. These shoes are made for an urban environment, and there is some prioritization of durability over ground feel.

Fit & Sizing: Overall, these Angles barefoot chelsea boots fit narrow to medium width feet, and lower to medium volume feet. They’re easy to pull on thanks to the back pull tab and the elastic insert. They fit around my somewhat smaller ankles well.

I found these to run small compared to the size chart. I got a size EU38 in the lined winter version. According to the size chart, this should’ve been 1.9cm of extra space for my 23.3cm foot measurement. I usually shoot for around 1.2cm, but wanted to give myself the extra space for the lining and for thicker socks. Based on the fit, I think an additional size up would’ve been better, especially for thicker socks.

Vegan Barefoot Chelsea Boots

Many barefoot Chelsea boots are made with leather, but there are lots of fantastic vegan options too. Several of the leather options listed above also come in vegan options–including the Mukishoes Chelsea in cork, and the Magical Shoes Lupino in a faux leather. Here are boots that only come in vegan versions.

Feelgrounds Chelsea Boots

Vegan Faux Leather | water-repellant | sizes EU 34-49| $149 | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

Feelgrounds Chelsea Boots | Vegan barefoot chelsea boots

Feelgrounds Chelsea Boots are vegan Chelsea Boots that come in black, sienna, and a trendy all-cream color. They have a wide, foot-shaped toe box, and a flat sole (no heel). They have the same sole and tread as the Patrol boots, which are thicker and stiffer than Feelgrounds’ everyday shoes. See my reel on Instagram for a quick video comparison. They have a total stack height of 13mm, so there is a trade off for cushion and protection from the ground vs flexibility and better ground feel.

The uppers are a faux PU leather. Faux leather can sometimes look shiny and plasticky, but I feel like they did a good job making it look more realistic with a matte finish and some grain to the texture.

The inside is lined with soft microfiber. These are water-repellant thanks to the vegan leather, but not completely waterproof as there isn’t an extra membrane. For a fully waterproof vegan barefoot from Feelgrounds, check out the Patrol winter boots.

The boots are unisex and come in sizes EU34-49. Retail is $149 plus shipping which is usually about $18 to the US. Use code KELLY5 for 5% off at Feelgrounds.

Fit & Sizing: I found these to run true to size. I ordered a size 38 for my 23.3cm foot measurement, which gives them about 1.5cm of extra space. I usually aim for about 1.2cm, but find that a little extra space in boots works better as I’m typically wearing thicker socks.

Bohempia Rola boots

Vegan ultrasuede | 36-47 | available in extra wide | 132€ | Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Bohempia Rola Vegan Barefoot Chelseas Boots

Bohempia makes barefoot versions of some popular sneaker and boot styles using vegan uppers. The Role boots use an innovative material made from recycled polyester collected from recycled plastic bottles. They call this durable and breathable material Ultrasuede®. It’s also water-resistant when treated.

The regular barefoot line at Bohempia is already pretty wide and high volume, but they also have a wide barefoot fit that’s even wider. The wide sizes start at a width of 10cm in EU36 and go up to 11.6cm for size EU47. These fit both wide and extra wide feet

Rugged Barefoot Chelsea Boots for Outdoor Adventures

If you’ve been looking for the perfect replacement for your heavy, toe-squishing Blundstones, these lightweight and foot-shaped Chelsea boots will be a definite upgrade.

Lems Chelsea Boots

Leather | waterproof version available | sizes M5/W6.5 – M15| $150 – $165

Lems Chelsea Boots | Minimalist Chelsea Boots with wide toe box

These Lems Chelsea Boots feel like a do-it-all, almost indestructible version of a Chelsea boot. If you have Blundstones (or you’ve been eyeing them), but really don’t want to squish your toes or deal with the back pain a heeled boot can cause, then slide on a pair of Lems’ new Chelsea Boots. Like most Lems, these boots have a moderate sole thickness of 14.5mm which makes them great form someone new to barefoot shoes, or someone that simply wants a thicker sole for their boots without losing all the flexibility.

The original Lems Chelsea Boots doesn’t have the best traction, so if you want better grip, opt for the Chelsea Boot Tuff. You do get a bit of a trade off in flexibility though.

Lems offers several: oiled leather brown espresso uppers on the waterproof version, suede light brown uppers on the regular version, and soon coming in all black. I opted for the waterproof version, and it’s performed great, even when standing in a (shallow) river of water.

Fit & Sizing: I would go up at least 1/2 size on the waterproof version, if not a full size if you’re going to wear thicker socks or like more room. I’m typically a 7.5/EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot measurement, and I went up 1/2 size to an 8.

See my video review of the Lems Chelsea Boots on Instagram here.

Xero Shoes Ridgeway Chelsea Boots

Nubuck Leather | Sizes US W5 – 12 | $160

Another contender to replace your Blundstones has entered the chat with this new 2024 release from Xero Shoes. The Ridgeway Chelsea boots come in black or brown nubuck leather that feels soft but durable. I find that nubuck is typically a better option for hiking boots as the velvety matte surface naturally conceals small scratches, scuffs, and abrasions better than smooth or shiny leathers. These are naturally wanter-resistant, but do not have a separate membrane to make them fully waterproof.

The  soles feature Xero Shoes’ signature chevron lug pattern, which makes these the barefoot Chelsea boots with the best grip on this list. They have a great balance of flexibility and ruggedness; my main wish is that these were slightly wider in the toe box as I generally find Xero Shoes a bit too narrow.

These Chelsea boots are available directly from Xero Shoes and at REI in the US. If you’re located in the EU, you can shop directly on Xero Shoes EU website.

For the wettest weather, the Gracie is a short rubber pull-on rain boot. For a less rugged, more minimal option from Xero, check out the Tari boots.

Fit & Sizing: Xero Shoes tend to be best suited for those with narrow feet and toe splay. I find that I usually have to order 1/2 size up in Xero Shoes from my typical US size. I’m wearing these in a women’s US 8. Xero Shoes does offer a free exchange program in the US.
