Ditch the bulky wellies and give these comfortable barefoot rain boots a try. These lightweight waterproof boots feature a wide toe box and a flat and flexible sole.

When the rainy season hit, it used to mean pulling out my heavy, heeled, and narrow rubber rain boots. Traditional rain boots, while effective at keeping your feet dry, often come with bulky designs, rigid soles, and a lack of flexibility that can negatively affect your foot health. This is where barefoot rain boots come in, offering a more natural, comfortable alternative. With minimalist designs that mimic the shape and movement of your feet, barefoot rain boots give you the waterproof protection you need without sacrificing comfort or agility.

In this post, we’ll explore the best options for barefoot rain boots, starting with your classic rubber rain boots. I’ve also included a whole list of other waterproof options, so you can pick the boots that best fit your lifestyle.

Looking for kid’s sizes? Check out this post for the best barefoot rain boots for kids.

Best Barefoot rain boots

Barefoot Rubber Rain Boots

These barefoot rubber rain boots check all the boxes, including an anatomically shaped toe box, and a thin, flat and flexible sole. They’re a minimalist version of your classic wellies.

Wildling Ranidae Rubber Rain Boots

Wildling Ranidae barefoot rubber rain boots

The Wildling Ranidae is the barefoot rain boot we’ve all been waiting for—lightweight, flexible, and actually fun to wear. Unlike stiff, clunky rubber boots, Ranidae moves with you, letting your feet bend and flex naturally while keeping water out. These rubber rain boots have the ultimate barefoot feel we’ve come to expect from Wildling shoes.

The deep-tread sole gives extra grip on slick surfaces, whether you’re splashing through puddles, wandering muddy trails, or just tackling a rainy day in the city. It comes in toddler through adult sizes, with plenty of toe space for a natural fit that doesn’t feel bulky. They’re available in orange or yellow for kids, and orange or forest green for adults. Made in Italy from vegan, water-repellent SEBS material, the Ranidae is a fresh take on rain boots—because wet weather shouldn’t mean compromising on foot freedom.

Fit and sizing: Designed for year-round wear, the Rainidae boots have room for warm socks in winter but still breathes in warmer weather. I opted for the EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot length, which is my usually size in Wildling shoes. They are a great fit length wise, but a bit roomy in the heel (I have a narrower heel). With thin socks, I’ll probably need to add a heel grip for a more secure fit. However, paired with the new Wildling Calora thicker knit wool socks, they’re a perfect fit. My 3-year-old also got the boots in the same size as the Wildling shoes he’s been wearing all winter, and they’re also a great fit with the wool socks. Hopefully that means he’ll have a little space to grow and continue to wear them through spring and summer with thinner socks.

Saguaro Brisk Barefoot Rain Boots

Saguaro Shoes barefoot rubber rain boots with tall shaft

These tick all the boxes for a solid barefoot rain boot, including a wide toe box, and a flat and flexible sole. They’re fully waterproof with a taller shaft cinches at the top. The rubber shaft is flexible and pretty thin—if you get the unlined version, it’s a little floppy. But if you get the lined version, it’s warmer and has more structure. They recently updated the sole for more tread.

Use code KELLY15 for 15% off at Saguaro Shoes. This makes the unlined version $51, and the lined version $60.

Xero Shoes Gracie Short Rubber Rain Boot

Xero Shoes Gracie barefoot rubber rain boots

This short rubber rain boot is a cute slip-on style. They can take some effort to get on as the elastic insert at the ankle isn’t super stretchy, but that also helps them stay on better.

The Gracie rain boot is currently only available in women’s sizes, from women’s US 5 – 12. I wear a women’s US 7 based on my 23.3 cm foot measurement. The fit is comparable to other Xero Shoes, which I find runs a little narrow in the toe box. These barefoot rain boots are $80 and come in four colors.

Textile Waterproof Barefoot

Koel Rana

These feature a waterproof textile upper that cinches at the top. They’ve withstood plenty of puddle jumping and wading in streams. The also come in a fully lined wool version, so they work well for both rain and cold weather. Available in sizes EU24- 41 at PedTerra in the US. Use code KELLY for 10% off.

Leather Waterproof Barefoot Boots for Rain

These aren’t your classic wellies, but all of these leather barefoot boots are fully waterproof with an integrated membrane. Some waterproofing is better than others, so I’ve only included the ones that I’ve found reliable to keep my feet dry. Leather does need more maintenance to keep it waterproof and help it last. I recommend regularly using a waterproofing wax, which both protects and conditions the leather.

Learn how to waterproof your boots for winter.

Lems Chelsea Boots | Minimalist Chelsea Boots with wide toe box
  • Lems Waterproof Chelsea Boots: These aren’t rubber rain boots, but they are pull-on and waterproof thanks to the oiled leather and separate membrane . I like to think of these as a great barefoot replacement for Blundstone boots.
  • Lems Boulder Boots: There are several different waterproof options when it comes to the Boulder Boot. We’ve like both the Boulder Boot Grip and Summit for a more rugged hiking boot with moderate cushion. I’ll also use these for work in the yard as the extra cushion is helpful when using a shovel.
  • BeLenka Winter and Ranger Boots: BeLenka has an extensive range of barefoot boots, and I’ve found the Winter and Ranger boots to work best for wet weather. They both have treated leather and a separate water-resistant membrane. Use code KELLY5 for 5% off at BeLenka.
  • Feelgrounds Patrol Boots: This Vegan option uses a waterproof membrane and a gusseted tongue to make them fully waterproof barefoot boots.
  • Vivobarefoot Tracker boots: The Tracker FG has been Vivo’s main waterproof barefoot boot, and previously included a waterproof membrane. Known for their innovation and sustainability, the newest version of the trackers are touted to still be waterproof, though they did remove the membrane. These are another rugged barefoot hiking boot that is meant to get you through any type of weather. Use code BSG20 for 20% off at Vivobarefoot.

A good work boot should protecting your feet, not killing your feet. These wide toe box work boots range from safety boots with a steel toe to the most barefoot, flexible soles.

When it comes to work boots, comfort and safety are often at odds. Many traditional work boots feature narrow toe boxes and elevated heels, leading to cramped toes, bad posture, and discomfort after long hours on your feet. But, minimalist work boots with wide toe boxes and zero-drop soles are changing the game. These boots allow your feet to spread naturally while offering the protection and durability needed for tough jobs.

If you’re looking for work boots that combine comfort, safety, and the benefits of minimalist design, here’s a roundup of the best wide toe box, zero-drop work boots. This post includes fit and sizing tips along with discount codes to help you get the best deal.

Steel Toe Wide Toe Box Boots and barefoot work boots

Sizing reference

For most of these shoes, I’ll provide a sizing reference based on my experience with the fit. Read more on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I’m most often a US7.5/EU38 in my barefoot shoes, but sometimes size up in barefoot boots to accommodate for thicker socks. My feet are medium width and measure 23.3cm long. I typically look for shoes with an extra 1.2cm of space.

My husband Aaron also tested out some of these boots. His feet measure 26.8cm and he is most often a US10.5/EU43.

Steel Toe Works Boots with a Wide Toe Box

Carets Determination Steel Toe Boots

$250 | Sizes Men’s US7/EU39 – US12/EU45 | Nubuck Leather | Steel Toe | 19 mm stack height | Resoleable

Best for: Jobs requiring steel-toe protection without sacrificing foot health.

Carets Wide Toe Box Steel Toe Work Boots

Carets steel toe boots blend the safety features of a traditional work boot with the comfort of a minimalist design. This newly released boot was designed as a full safety boot and made to be used in an indoor or factory setting, though some people have been putting them to the test in more outdoor conditions, and still been happy with the results.

The tech specs of the boots were tested by a third party. You can review the results of their testing and the third-party certifications on the Carets website.

Tech specs of the Carets Steel Toe Boots:

  • Sole is slip resistant, plus oil and chemical resistant
  • Puncture resistant in the sole and toe cap
  • Impact, compression and electrical hazard

They are very wide and roomy in the toe box, which allows your toes to spread out naturally. They also run wide through the heel, so if you have narrower ankles, you may need to add heel pads to adjust the fit.

The zero-drop sole ensures that your feet stay in a neutral position, promoting better posture and reducing foot fatigue.

They are heavier than a typical barefoot boot due to the steel toe, but the soles aren’t super thick and heavy. The boots have a 19mm stack height. The Carets Determination Steel Toe Boots provide both protection and comfort for those working in environments that demand safety footwear.

The boots use a Goodyear Storm Welt, which means they are resoleable.

Sizing: I have these in the smallest size, the Men’s US6/EU39. For my 23.3cm foot length, the EU38 (men’s US7) would likely be a better fit. The boots can accomodate higher volume feet. Low to mid volume would have room to add an extra insole for additional cushion.

Gaucho Ninja Carpenter’s Safety Boots

$265 on sale | Sizes EU37 – US12/EU48 | Leather | Steel Toe or Composite | Standard Wide or Extra Wide fits | Customizable | Goodyear welted and resoleable  | Code KELLY10 for 10% off |

Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Gaucho Ninja boots are handcrafted, minimalist work boots that focus on comfort, durability, and natural foot movement. They use premium materials and durable construction methods, including the Goodyear welt method which makes these boots resoleable.

Tech specs of the Birkenstock Gaucho Ninja Carpenter’s Safety Boots:

  • Steel toe caps (200J) EN ISO 12568:2010
  • Anti-puncture insole material (1200N) ASTM F2413-2018
  • Soles made in Germany EN ISO 20344/20345 with anti-slip, fuel and oil proof, and anti-static properties

If you’re looking for boots that offer customization, Gaucho Ninja offers a made-to-order option, which also includes selecting from a standard wide or extra wide fit. Their flat soles are one of the thinner and more flexible options on this list, but still offer a high degree of protection.

The higher quality, longevity, and craftsmanship is reflected in the higher price tag for these wide toe box safety boots. These are currently on sale for $265 in October 2024, which is an incredible deal.

Sizing: Custom sizing for these boots starts with a foot scan. If you opt for the standard boots, I wear an EU38 in Gaucho Ninja boots.

Birkenstock QS700 Steel Toe Safety Boots

$150+ | Sizes EU35 – EU48 | Leather or Vegan Microfiber | Steel Toe

Birkenstocks are known for their wide toe box, but also feature a signature cork footbed that is very structured and stiff. The QS700 safety boots come closer to a minimalist option once you remove the cork footbed.

Once the insole is removed, these are one of the most comfortable steel toe work boots currently available. The sole is flat, and it’s reasonably light and flexible while still offering the necessary features of a safety shoe.

Tech specs of the Birkenstock QS700:

  • 200 joule steel toe cap with a scratch-resistant cap guard protects the forefoot
  • Outsole is nonslip, metal-free, and oil- and petrol-resistant. Provides for energy absorption around the heel and is penetration-resistant.
  • Shoe is certified in accordance with EN ISO 20345:2011
  • Meets the requirements of protection category S3

For those wanting a vegan wide toe box work boot, the Birkenstock QS700 comes in a microfiber upper in addition to a leather upper.

These are a solid option, but people generally don’t find them as durable as the first two on the list (which reasons that with a higher price, you are getting better quality).

There are several places to order the Birkenstock safety shoes. The ZaMi website, a Spanish minimalist shoe retailer, ships internationally. Once you’re on the ZaMi website, search “Birkenstock” and the options will pop up. Shipping is 30 € to the US.  The Heel is another retailer that carries both the QS700 and the low top QS500.

If you’re in the UK, you can purchase directly from Birkenstock. They’re also available on the German Amazon website, which will deliver to most EU countries. I also see used ones pop up websites like eBay and Poshmark.

Minimalist and Barefoot Work Boots

This next set of wide toe box work boots don’t have as many technical specs, but they’ll still keep your feet protected and comofrotable. They start on the more minimalist end with thicker soles, and move down to the most barefoot options with thinner and more flexible soles.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots

$200 | Sizes Men’s US7 – US14 | Leather

Best for: Outdoor and rugged environments where durability is key.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger Boots

Jim Green has been making boots designed for Rangers in Africa for over three decades, but this is the brand’s first foray into a more minimalist design. They took their well-loved boots and created a new sole that was zero-drop and more flexible. It allows for natural foot movement while providing a rugged and tough exterior.

Jim Green was already known for having a wider toe box than most, but the Barefoot Ranger boots are even wider with less of a taper. I say less, because these still do have a slight taper. If you want a truly anatomical shape for your boot, you may find these too narrow. However, the compromise may be worth it for some that need the durability this boot provides.

Overall, I wouldn’t fully classify these as true a “barefoot” boot due to the thicker sole and slight taper at the toes, but they still offer the freedom of movement and ground feedback you’d expect from minimalist footwear.

The Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger boots are available on Amazon in the US, with free shipping and free returns.

For barefoot work boots with a taller shaft, the Jim Green Barefoot Trooper Boots have an 8-inch shaft for more protection.

Sizing: This is another one where the smallest size available was a Men’s 7/EU39. They were a little loose, though the larger size did mean I had more room in the toe box. An EU38 would be the best fit for length, making them true to size.

Lems Boulder Boot Grip or Summit

$185-$195 | Sizes Women’s US6 – Men’s US15 | Leather or Nylon | Waterproof | Slip-Resistant Outsole | 16.5mm stack height

Best for: Those needing a lightweight yet rugged option with some cushion for less extreme work environments.

Lems Boulder Summit Boots are minimalist hiking boots with a rugged tread

The Lems Boulder Boot is a favorite in the minimalist footwear community for good reason. With a flexible, zero-drop sole and wide toe box, it allows your foot to move naturally while still providing enough grip and durability for work settings. These boots are lightweight, making them a great choice for anyone who wants to maintain foot health without feeling weighed down by heavy boots. They also have a moderate amount of cushion, which can made long days on hard flooring more comfortable.

These barefoot work boots come in a few different sole and upper combinations. Both the Grip and Summit come in leather waterproof uppers. The Boulder Summit has a rugged, zig-zag pattern made for better grip on uneven terrain. The Boulder Grip features a slip-Resistant rubber outsole.

The Boulder Boot Summit is another option for those wanting a vegan minimalist work boot. In addition to the waterproof leather uppers pictured here, it also comes in waterproof vegan nylon uppers.

Sizing: With the Boulder Boot Grip Waterproof, I opted for a size US Women’s 8. This is 1/2 size up from my usual size to accommodate for thicker socks and consider the space taken up by the waterproof membrane.. Aaron is wearing the Boulder Summit in Men’s US11.

Gaucho Ninja Chukka Boots

$416 | Sizes EU37 – EU48 | Leather | Standard Wide or Extra Wide fits | Customizable | Goodyear welted and resoleable | KELLY10 for 10% off

Best for: Handmade, high-quality option for those who value craftsmanship and minimalist design.

Code KELLY10 for 10% off

The Gaucho Ninja Chukka boots feature the same level of craftsmanship and high-quality materials as their steel toe boots included on the list above. These Chukka boots are similar in the design, but with out the reinforced steel toe.

Similarly, they can be customized using a wide or extra wide last, and the Goodyear welted designed means they can be resoled. Combined with the premium uppers, these boots are designed to last many years. If you’re looking for something that combines craftsmanship with minimalist principles, Gaucho Ninja boots are a top contender.

Sizing: I started my ordering process with Gaucho Ninja using their foot scanner, but they also have a detailed size chart for both their wide and extra wide widths. I’m wearing an EU38.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Boots

$240 | Sizes Women’s US4.5/EU35 – US15/EU49 | Leather | Waterproof | Code BSG20 for 20% off

Best for: Those preferring a true barefoot feel

Vivobarefoot Tracker FGs as leather barefoot work boots

Code BSG20 for 20% off

Vivobarefoot’s Tracker Boots are an excellent option for those seeking a true barefoot work boot with a wide toe box. Though designed more for outdoor trekking, their durability and sturdy build make them ideal for work environments. The zero-drop design keeps your foot in a natural position, while the wide toe box ensures your toes aren’t cramped after hours of wear. These boots are also waterproof, making them perfect for wet conditions.

Since these are the thinnest sole and they’re designed specifically for the outdoors, you can see a higher rate of wear on harder surfaces like concrete.

Vivobarefoot Trackers are now available in several different sole and upper options. The newest Tracker at Moc style features deeper 4mm lugs and a moc toe design.

Sizing: For more Vivobarefoot boots, including the Tracker, I find that they fit true to size. For me, that’s an EU38 and for Aaron that’s an EU43.

Best Wide Toe Box Work Boots

Why Choose Minimalist, Wide Toe Box Work Boots?

Traditional work boots often sacrifice comfort for safety, with narrow toe boxes that force your toes into an unnatural position and elevated heels that can strain your posture. Minimalist boots, on the other hand, are designed to allow your feet to function as they were meant to. Here’s why choosing wide toe box, zero-drop work boots is a smart choice:

Improved Foot Health: A wide toe box allows your toes to spread naturally, reducing the risk of bunions, hammertoes, and other foot deformities.

Better Posture: A zero-drop sole keeps your feet in a neutral position, promoting better posture and reducing strain on your knees, hips, and back.

Increased Comfort: With natural foot movement, these boots reduce the discomfort and fatigue that often come with long hours on your feet.

Durability with Flexibility: Minimalist work boots offer the same durability as traditional work boots but with the added benefit of flexibility, which enhances your overall movement.

Community Feedback: What the people would still like to see

The list of the above boots is a great start, but there are still some gaps. If any of the brands are reading this post, here are some things you might consider:

  • Composite Toe
  • Extending the size range to smaller sizes (some of the brands are geared towards men and stop around Men’s US7/EU39)
  • Slip-on/Chelsea Boots (some environments require boots with no laces)

Final Thoughts

If you’re tired of sacrificing comfort for protection in your work boots, it’s time to switch to a pair that supports your feet and your job. The wide toe box, zero-drop work boots listed here offer the perfect balance between safety, durability, and comfort. Whether you’re on a construction site, working outdoors, or simply looking for a more foot-friendly option, these brands have you covered.

Let your feet breathe, spread, and move naturally—without compromising on safety. Try out one of these minimalist work boots and experience the difference for yourself.

Have any experience with wide toe box or barefoot work boots? Share what has worked best for your, or if you have any brands you think should be added to the list.

Soccer cleats traditionally have a very narrow and pointed toe box. This can pretty painful, especially if you have have wide feet. Here is a list of soccer cleats for wide feet and soccer cleats with a wide toe box.

If you grew up playing soccer, you may have fond memories of chasing the ball around the field, making moves on the opposing team or even scoring the winning goal. But most of us also remember how tight and narrow the cleats were!

This post is called the best soccer cleats for wide feet, but it’s really about the best soccer cleats for any feet. The issue with most cleats is that the toe box is so narrow. This blog is all about barefoot shoes, which are based on the premise that shoes should fit the natural shape of the feet. Our feet are naturally widest at the toes, so shoes, including cleats, should be too.

Cleat Brands that Tend to be Narrower

If a wide cleat is your goal, then you’re going to want to avoid these brands that tend to be on the narrower end: Nike, Under Armor, Adidas and Puma. This list isn’t exhaustive, but includes some really popular brands that we’ve found to be pretty narrow.

Wide Soccer Cleats from Traditional Brands

First up, there are a few options from traditional cleat brands that make soccer cleats for wide feet. By traditional, I mean they still taper at the toe box, but they’re overall wider than many of the popular options.

Vizari

Diadora

Kelme

zephz Wide Traxx cleats

Wide Toe Box Cleats

There are a few companies that specifically make a true wide toe box cleat.

Natural Athletics: This is a newer company that makes minimalist cleats and basketball shoes for kids and adults. The soccer cleats have a truly wide, foot-shaped toe box. However, these have a sock-like collar around the collar, which can make them difficult to get on for those with wider and higher volume feet.

The basketball shoes are also great for wide feet, and also feature flexible, grippy soles.

CODE Footwear: These soccer cleats are custom-made, based on a 3D scan of your feet. They have a wide toe box that reflects your foot’s natural shape. These are geared towards professional athletes, which is reflected in the $600 starting price tag.

Barefoot Shoes as a Cleat Replacement

There are some barefoot shoes that work well as a cleat replacement as they have decent lugs and a toe cap.

My son has mostly worn the barefoot shoes listed below instead of cleats for baseball and soccer. At his age (7 and under) and level, we haven’t noticed a difference in performance. Since the main trade off with not wearing cleats is the larger lugs, it seemed like as long he wasn’t slipping or sliding around, he wasn’t at a significant competitive disadvantage.

Here are some of the options:

Xero Shoes Kid’s Prio: We’ve used these Xero Shoes as a substitute at younger ages as they have lugs and a toe cap.

Saguaro Water Shoes: The lugs on the Saguaro Kid’s Smart I shoes aren’t super deep, but we’ve found the sole really grippy. My son used these for basketball, baseball, soccer, and just a lot of outdoor play. Use code KELLY15 for an extra 15% off on the Saguaro website. You can also find Saguaro Shoes on Amazon.

Vivobarefoot Trail Running Shoes: Vivobarefoot has trail running shoes with deeper lugs that can work as an alternative to cleats for both kids and adults. You can use code BSG20 for 20% off at Vivobarefoot.

For kids, the Primus Trail II FG has 2.5mm multi-directional lugs.

There are a few more options in the adult sizes, including the Primus Trail FG, Hydra Esc, and the Tracker Decon Low.

Good rain boots for kids should make it easy and fun to play in the rain, but most rain boots are clunky, narrow and heeled. Check out this guide for the best rain boots for kids and toddlers — they’re lightweight, flat, flexible for easy movement, plus foot-shaped for comfort.

One of the best ways to cheer up on a rainy, gloomy day is to help your kids pull on their rain boots and head outside. Usually, you’ll see a wide grin spread across their faces and hear a few giggles as they jump and splash from puddle to puddle.

Unfortunately, those splashes can be a bit wobbly as many rain boots are heeled, stiff and narrow. While some people might like the aesthetics of a pointed and heeled boot, it’s not a great option for foot health and development, especially for kids.

Best Minimalist Rain Boots for Kids

Here is a list of the best barefoot rain boots for kids with these healthy features, so they can worry less about their uncomfortable boots, and more about having fun in the rain.

Our Favorite: Wildling Ranidae Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 7 – Adults | Rubber | $69 – $99 | Free shipping code: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

With its one-piece molded design, there are no seams that could split or let water in later on.

The Ranidae boots are our clear favorite for barefoot rain boots. They’re incredibly light, cleverly designed with no seams to leak, and have a sturdier tread than the rest.

Fit and sizing: The Ranidae boots are slightly wider and higher volume than Wildling shoes in the same size. Designed for year-round wear, they have enough room for warm socks in winter while still allowing breathability in warmer weather.

I chose an EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot length, which is my usual Wildling size. The length is perfect, but they feel loose without thicker socks. For warmer weather, I’d add a heel grip for a more secure fit. However, with the new Wildling Calora thicker knit wool socks, they fit perfectly.

My 3-year-old got the same size as his current Wildling shoes, and they fit well with the thick wool socks. Hopefully, he’ll have a little room to grow and can continue wearing them into spring and summer with thinner socks.

These flexible rain boots from Saguaro shoes are now available in kid’s sizes, starting at EU24. They tick all the boxes for a solid barefoot rain boot, including a wide toe box, and a flat and flexible sole.

They’re fully waterproof with a taller shaft cinches at the top. The rubber shaft is flexible and pretty thin—if you get the unlined version, it’s a little floppy. But if you get the lined version, it’s warmer and has more structure. They recently updated the sole for more tread.

Reima Ankka Rain Boots

S Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 7.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $55 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima barefoot rain boots for kids

The Reima Ankka rain boots are one of the newest additions to their barefoot line in 2025. They have a naturally-shaped toe box and a flexible sole. They’re decently lightweight (not as light as the Wildlings), but still perfect for all-day play. The soles provide enough grip on wet cement.

They’re easy for kids to pull on by themselves and have a soft cotton lining for comfort. Like all of Reima’s rain gear (we love their waterproof rain jackets and pants too), these boots are totally waterproof and PFAS-free, making them a safe and practical choice.

The Ankka runs true to size with room for a medium-thick sock. If your child is between sizes or you want extra growth room, sizing up is a good idea. The removable insole features Reima’s Happy Fit markings, which makes it easy to check sizing as your child grows.

Ten Little Kids Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 6 – 13 | Rubber | $46

Ten Little Minimalist Rain Boots for Kids and Toddlers

With a spacious toe box and a flat, flexible sole, Ten Little’s rain boots for kids are a solid barefoot-friendly option. The thicker sole does make them a bit heavier, but they’re still far lighter and more comfortable than most traditional rain boots. My toddler has really enjoyed wearing them, and I love that he can slip them on easily. Available in four colors.

Find a full brand review of Ten Little shoes here.

Tree Grandpa Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5 – Little Kid 10 | Rubber | $20 – $24

These flexible rubber rain boots for toddlers were recommend by multiple readers on Instagram, and at such a great price point, I had to try them out! Tree Grandpa rain boots for kids are only available on Amazon for about $24 and in 9 different colors. These are also available on Amazon Canada.

I like that they’re very lightweight, flexible and easy to put on. They do have a shorter shaft, so if you have a child that really likes to make a big splash or is wading into some creeks, they may let some water in from the top.

BeLenka Pudds Rain Boots

Sizes EU22 – 31 | Rubber | $60 (on sale for $40!) | KELLY5 for 5% off

BeLenka brings their expertise as one of the biggest brands in barefoot shoes to their new rubber rain boot for kids, the Pudds boot. They’re made from thermoplastic rubber, ultra light and super flexible. They come in traditional colors like yellow and black along with a dusty pink and bright aqua blue. While they are listed for $60, I’ve seen these kids’ wellies on sale for $40.

Bundgaard Tall Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5.5 – Youth 2 | Rubber | $70 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Bundgaard Tall Rubber Rain Boots for Kids

Bundgaard is a Danish company that makes  basic rubber rain boots with a simple cotton lining. However, these have a wide toe box, unlike many boots which tend to narrow and squish the toes. They also have a very flat, flexible sole. This style comes in a large color variety, from classic yellow, pastels like lavender and mint green, or a simple navy.

Bundgaard is available in the US from PedTerra, which offers free shipping and returns. Use code KELLY to get 10% off your first purchase at PedTerra.

Bundgaard Short Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5.5 – Youth 2 | Rubber | $65 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Bundgaard Short Rubber Rain Boots for Kids

These shorter Bundgaard boots are zero-drop and ankle-high. You can choose from an unlined version, or one lined with cozy wool if you need  something fully waterproof and extra warm. The lined versions also come with a Wool Thermal Insole that can be removed for added flexibility, or kept in for extra warmth.

Bundgaard is available in the US from PedTerra, which offers free shipping and returns. Use code KELLY to get 10% off your first purchase at PedTerra.

Foot Buddy Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 8 – 13 | Rubber | $40 | Code KELLY15 for 15% off

These cute rubber boots look just like a little shark. The toe is roomy and they’re flat and flexible.

Vivobarefoot Fulham or Lumi Boots

Sizes Little Kid 9 – Youth 6 | Treated Leather or Synthetic Uppers | $85 – $118 | Code BSG20 for 20% off

This is a classic Chelsea boot from Vivobarefoot featuring waterproof (so puddle-proof!) uppers, fleece lining and a removable thermal insole. These are a great option if you want something much more flexible and warmer than what is offered by a rubber rain boot. The Lumi boot is heavier duty, and can also be used as a snow or winter boot.

Koel Rana Boots

Sizes EU 24 – 43 | Aqua Stop Tex membrane | Versions available with Lambswool lining | $113+

These are an ultimate outdoor boot that will have your kids ready to play all day, no matter the weather. These have flexibility in the sole of a barefoot shoe plus grippy lugs. They also feature Aqua Stop Tex membrane to keep the foot dry for longer. This version is fully lined with merino wool, so it can be used through very cold winter days. If you’re in the US, I’d recommend checking PedTerra first as they have free shipping and free returns, and you can get 10% off with code KELLY. Otherwise, you can shop directly online at Koel.

Koel also has rubber rain boots for kids with a wide toe box for $50.

Target Cat & Jack Rain Boots – Compromise Option

Sizes Little Kid 5 – Youth 6 | Rubber | $20 – $25

Cat & Jack No Heel Rain Boots for Kids

The Target Brand Cat & Jack makes a solid no heel rain boot option. They’re also very flexible. The down side is that they aren’t the widest in the toe box. If your kids only need rain boots occasionally, these are a solid compromise option that’s easy to find and pretty affordable. This brand does have some heeled options, but it’s usually the boots with the pull on handles that are zero-drop (or pretty close to it). Sometimes styles go up t

Minimalist Rain boots in adult sizes

If you’re looking for yourself or for your bigger kids that are in adults, there are a few good options for minimalist rain boots in adult sizes. Here are my top picks, but you can find a full list here with detailed reviews.

  • Wildling Ranidae Rubber Rain Boots: These are the same style as reviewed above. They come in toddler through adult sizes. A full rubber, tall rain boot with great flexibility and ground feel. Shop at Wildling US or Wildling International. Use code AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE for free shipping.
  • Saguaro Shoes Brisk I Barefoot Rain Boots: Very lightweight, flexible rubber rain boots. Come in lined and unlined Use code KELLY15 for 15% off at Saguaro Shoes. This makes them $51.
  • Xero Shoes Gracie: this is a short rubber rain boot, and the main option from a barefoot shoe brand. It’s currently only available in women’s sizes, from women’s US 5 – 12.
  • Koel Rana: Some styles of the Koel Rana boots are available in sizes up to EU43.
  • Lems Waterproof Chelsea Boots: These aren’t rubber rain boots, but they are pull-on and waterproof. I like to think of these as a great barefoot replacement for Blundstone boots.

There are also a number of waterproof barefoot winter boot options.

Being prepared with the right clothing and shoes like rain boots helps us spend more time outside, no matter the weather. My two year old is always the first to grab his rain boots and head to the door, excited to play out in the rain. The Softstar Fireside Slippers are pretty much the ultimate treat yourself slippers. And now they come in a new S’mores version with a thin Vibram sole for those that want a more durable sole for quick trips outside.

Looking for the coziest sheepskin house slippers? The Softstar Fireside Slippers are what slipper dreams are made of. I’ve had mine for years, and every fall I can’t wait for the moment it’s finally time to pull them back out. They’re that good!

Now there are two versions to choose from: the original soft-soled Fireside, and the new S’mores, which has a thin Vibram sole for stepping outside.

Foot-shaped Slippers

Because these slippers are made by a barefoot shoe brand, they feature a natural foot-shape. No squished toes here! In addition to the wide roomy toe box, there are no hidden heel lifts, and they securely attach to your feet, so they’re perfect for the barefoot shoe lover.

Materials

The Softstar Fireside Slippers are fully lined with plush sheepskin fleece, including an extra fluffy insole. The insoles can be removed and replaced — Softstar sells the replacement insoles on their website. This is a great option as the slippers are fairly expensive, and being able to replace the part that wears out the easiest improves the sustainability and longevity of the slippers.

There is no other materials for the sole other than the leather and fleece on the Fireside Slippers, so they’re super lightweight and flexible, and truly a house slipper. Like all of Softstar’s shoes, these are handmade in their Oregon workshop.

The S’mores slippers have similar construction, but with an added Vibram sole.

Sizing

Softstar has it’s own sizing system, so to start off, you’ll want to measure your feet. Since switching to barefoot shoes, I’ve gotten in the habit of regularly measuring my feet, especially before a big shoe purchase. You can find some tips on measuring your feet for barefoot shoes here.

I ordered size 5U regular, which is listed as a Mens 5/ Women’s 6. My foot measurement is 23.3cm, and according to the size chart, the 5U fits foot lengths up to 23cm. For reference, I’m typically a size US 7.5/EU38.

I read a lot of reviews that recommended sizing down, and I’m happy I did. Softstar notes they should feel a bit snug when new as the sheepskin leather with stretch with wear. They felt comfortable from first wear, and they still feel just right a few months later.

These are available in Softstar sizes adult 5U to 15U. Softstar also offers a wide option for these slippers if you have a wider foot. The regular width accommodates around 10cm – 12cm depending on the size.

S’mores: New Vibram sole option

I love how soft and flexible the suede sole is on the Fireside slippers, but I’ve definitely wished I could keep them on for quick trips outside — taking out the trash, grabbing the mail, or morning school drop-off. Now I can with the new S’mores version! It has the same cozy barefoot feel, just with a thin Vibram sole that adds a bit more durability while staying lightweight and flexible.

Pricing

The Softstar Fireside Slippers and S’mores slippers retail for $155. Softstar does occasionally run sales, usually before fall and winter kick off (around late September) and again during Black Friday. Discounts are typically around $20–$25 off.

I know, that’s a lot for slippers (even on sale), which is why I put these firmly in the treat yourself (or someone you really like) category. But honestly, they live up to every rave review.

When you need your feet wrapped up in warm socks or cozy slippers all day long in the winter, make sure they’re good for your feet too! Check out this list of warm barefoot slippers.

It’s winter time and even with the heater on indoors, my feet still get cold without a warm pair of slippers or socks. While most slippers and socks aren’t as narrow and restricting as many conventional shoes, you’ll still find toe boxes that are too tight and small heel lifts in many slippers.

wide toe box on barefoot slippers vs narrow toe box on conventional slippers

When looking for house slippers that are good for your feet, just keep in mind the same qualities that you look for in shoes:

  • Wide, anatomically-shaped toe box
  • Soles that are thin, flat and flexible
  • Attach securely to your feet (if you’re going to be walking in them often, I recommend getting ones that are not backless slip-ons that can change your walking gait.)
healthy features in barefoot slippesr

There are a lot of great options out there and every year I see dozens of cute fuzzy slippers in store, and I definitely haven’t tried all of them. These are just a few brands I’m familiar with that consistently follow barefoot qualities.

You can find foot-friendly slippers at many large retailers too. Just check using them for the features above! For a list of foot-friendly socks with a wide toe box, see these posts for adult socks and kid socks.

Cozy Barefoot Slippers

Barefoot Slippers with Soft Soles

Softstar Fireside slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers

Softstar Fireside Slippers: $145 | Super cozy sheepskin leather and fleece. I recommend sizing down (I’m wearing a 5U based on my 23.3cm foot measurement). See detailed review here.

Kyrgies woven slippers with a wide toe box
Kyrgies woven slippers

Kyrgies Wovens: $89 | Kyrgies are thick wool yarn woven into a slipper by a  women’s cooperative in Kyrgyzstan. They have several slipper styles, but for the most foot-friendly option, go for the Woven. The bottoms are lined with suede and plenty cushy. I opted for a size EU38.

Softstar Merino Zen Moccasin: $125 | 100% merino wool upper. Rubberized fabric sole.

FeelBarefoot on Etsy: $82. Nubuck leather outer, lined with sheep fleece. Use code KELLY50 for 50% off original listed price.

Muk Luks Slippers: $20 on Amazon | Wool knit uppers with soft sole.

Smartwool Hudson Trail Slipper: $75 | Knitted wool uppers. Nylon sole and grippers.

Bombas Gripper Slippers: $45 | Thick lined slipper socks with grippy bottoms. These are a fully vegan option, made with cotton, acrylic and polyester.

Quince Gripper Slippers: 2-pack: $40 | Fleece-lined gripper slippers

Barefoot Slippers with Rubber Soles

Wildling Nelus slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers

Wildling Shoes Slippers:

  • Lotus Slippers: $59 – $99  | Felted wool uppers and Wildling’s thin and flexible rubber sole with a higher top. Shop Wildling US or Wildling International.
  • Nelus Slippers: These are the low-top version also using the same felted wool and rubber soles as the Lotus slippers. I like that these are more “slip-on,” but with too loose of a fit on these, they do become floppy. I wear these in my typical Wildling size of EU38 plus thicker socks for a secure fit. If you plan to wear without socks, you may want to size down. I have seen some people have issues with the sole unstitching from the uppers, but I’ve been wearing mine often for a year, and they’ve held up really well.
Mukishoes Pantufa slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers

Mukishoes Pantufa wool slippers | €75, code KELLYMUKI for 10% off | These are the softest wool slippers I’ve ever felt, made with felted wool from Spain. These use Mukishoes rubber outsole, which is very soft and flexible. Overall, a very lightweight and warm slipper. My one complaint is that the elastic edging around the foot opening digs into the back of my heels, so these are better to wear with socks (or sometimes I just step on the backs if I need to slip something on quickly).

Groundies Cozy Boots are one of the best barefoot slippers

Groundies Cozy Boots |  €135, code KELLY15 for 15% off through May 2025 |These aren’t technically a slipper but a suede boot. The fluffy wool lining is really nice and perfect if you want the comfort of a slipper all day. Even with the thicker lining around the foot and shaft, my typical size of EU38 works best. Shop Groundies US or Groundies EU.

Lems Drifter Fur Slippers: $100 | These wide toe box slippers are the lined version of Lem’s Drifter slip-ons. Thanks to the rubber sole, these are a great option if you plan to wear your slippers outside. With the styling, they look like a classic men’s barefoot slipper.

Xero Shoes Slippers: $70 | Xero Shoes has two vegan options that work well as barefoot slippers. The Pagosa is faux-wool house slipper while the Sunrise is super lightweight and made more for everyday (not just cold weather). Both have a collapsible heel and rubber sole.

Be Lenka Chillax Slippers: $89-$99 | Felted uppers and rubber sole. These come in a slip-on option and an ankle-cut version. Obviously the backless slip-on isn’t ideal for barefoot, so if you’re going to be wearing them at home all day, the ankle-cut version is a better option.

Vivobarefoot Felt Slipper:$95 | (Not available in Fall/Winter 2024 | These are 100% wool felt slippers with a soft leather sole. Handmade in Mongolia. Code BSG20 for 20% off at Vivobarefoot.

Manitobah House Moc: $80 | Cowhide suede uppers and sole. Lined with faux shearling. Manitobah also has the Street Moc with a rubber sole, though the toe box doesn’t look as roomy.

Best barefoot slippers for adults and kids

Barefoot Slippers for Kids

Bombas Youth Gripper Slippers: $45 | Starting with size US Toddler 11 | Thick lined slipper socks with grippy bottoms.

Target Cat & Jack Slipper Socks: $5.99 | These slipper socks are super cute, warm, and very affordable. They have a nice squared toe box and grippy dots on the bottom.

ShooShoos Toddler Slippers: $25 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off | These toddler slippers are made with suede and fully lined with wool. They have wide toe box (almost square) that’s made for toddler feet! They also have a wide opening that makes it easy for a toddler to put them on themselves.

Vivobarefoot Mim Felt Slipper: $55 | Starting at size EU27 | (Not available in 2024) These are 100% wool felt slippers with a soft leather sole. Handmade in Mongolia. Code KELLY10 for 10% off at Vivobarefoot.

One of the questions I am asked most often is if there are wide toe box or barefoot style shoes with specific features related to a certain profession. If you’re someone that works on their feet all day and you’re tired of shoes that just are not comfortable, then this post is for you! It’s the narrow toe boxes and incredibly stiff and heavy soles that bother most people, so all of these shoes feature a wide toe box, and flat soles that are lightweight.

I’ve rounded up all of my recommendations here for those that are looking for more comfortable options for steel toe safety shoes, slip-resistant shoes, or shoes for nurses and other healthcare workers that are on their feet for 12+ hour shifts.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. This means if you click on one of them, we may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for your support!

Wide toe box shoes with cushion (for nurses, other healthcare workers, those with long shifts, etc)

Most nurses and healthcare workers that ask me about shoes are looking for a shoe with a wide toe box that also has plenty of cushion to help with long shifts on hard floors. Barefoot shoes typically have thin, flat and flexible soles along with a wide toe box, but there are a few that offer a thicker, cushioned sole. Here are my top recommendations for wide toe box shoes with cushion.

Altras

Altra Running started with the idea that running shoes should have a wide foot-shape and balanced cushioning (aka no heel). 10 years later, Altra continues to make shoes that are zero-drop with a wide toe box, but still feature cushion. Most Altra styles have about 28mm of cushion, which many find to be plenty.

Altra three different widths, which they call FootShape designs. For a more natural fit, I’d stick with the Original and Standard FootShapes. You can also get most of their shoes in a wide option as well, but this is just a widening of the mid-foot area of the shoe, not additional space in the toe box.

Original (widest) FootShape Shoes – Altra offers several trail running and hiking shoes along with a road running shoe in its widest foot shape. If you don’t mind the lugs, then the Lone Peaks are a great option. The newest version of the Escalante, which is a road running shoe, also features this widest toe box.

Altra Lone Peaks are barefoot shoes with cushion making them one of the best barefoot shoes for beginners

Standard FootShape Shoes – This standard footshape has a lot more options, including cushion walking and road running shoes. While this shoe shape isn’t quite as wide as the Original, the toe box still has plenty of room for a lot of people. If you’re looking for an easy-to-clean option, the Torin Leather has an all-leather upper and a slip resistant rubber outsole.

Altras are available on Altra.com and at REI.

Altras, Comfortable Shoes for Nurses and Healthcare workers

Other Wide Toe Box Shoes with Cushion

Altras are definitely the option with the most cushion. If you want something in between with a moderate amount of cushion, then check out these brands:

Lems Shoes – Most of Lems styles have a wide, anatomically shaped toe box. The outsoles are made with air injection rubber so they’re a bit thicker, but very light. Most Lems shoes have a stack height of around 14mm consisting of an 8-9mm outsole and a 3-4mm cushioned insole. For casual options, I like the Primal 2s and the Chillums.

Lems Primals, great barefoot shoes for beginners

Bohempia Shoes—Bohempia’s barefoot shoes come in wide and extra wide. They have a foot-shaped toe box, flat soles, and uppers made with hemp. The total stack height is about 6mm, which includes a removable insole that’s about 3mm. Use code KELLY10 for 10% off at Bohempia.

Bohempia barefoot shoes

Barebarics —This is another barefoot shoe brand that offers just a little bit more cushion than the typical options. They have a 4mm outsole, plus a removable insole for a few more millimeters of cushion. Code KELLY5 for an additional 5% off Barebarics.

Barebarics Zing sneakers are great casual shoes for travel

Anatomic Sneakers with water-resistant uppers – This shoe by Anatomic has about a 6mm sole, so a little bit thicker sole than most barefoot shoes, but much more minimal compared to the Altras. The uppers are breathable cotton with a water resistance, so they’re easier to wipe clean.  Anatomic sneakers are available on PedTerra which offers free shipping and returns within the US. These are $58; you can get 10% off using code KELLY on PedTerra.

Slip-Resistant or Non-Slip Shoes with Wide Toe Box

Many professions require anti-slip safety footwear, including restaurant workers and healthcare professionals. Thankfully, there are some barefoot shoes with slip-resistant soles, so you can make both safety and foot health top priority.

Lems Kourt Grip – After many requests, this casual minimalist shoe from Lems got upgraded to a non-slip sole. With a little extra cushion, this shoe is made for those that spend hours on their feet that want a little more padding. The uppers are leather, which means they’re easy to wipe clean from spills too.

Xero Shoes Slip-Resistant Prio – One of Xero Shoe’s most popular shoes is the Prio, and now it comes in water-resistant leather uppers with a slip-resistant rubber sole.  The soles are fairly thin, so these are a great option if you’re comfortable in barefoot shoes.

Slip-Resistant Shoes with wide toe box by Xero Shoes

Altra Torin Leather – This Altra shoe has a slip-resistant rubber sole, plus water-resistant leather uppers.  They have a wide toe box and a stack height of 28mm, so lots of cushion. They come in black and light grey.

Wide Toe Box Safety Shoes – Steel Toe Shoes or Composite Toe Shoes

Read this post for a complete list of wide toe box work boots: from steel toe to barefoot options.

For those that spend all day on their feet and need to keep them protected, the Birkenstock QS700 safety shoe is the best option I’ve found. It has a wide, foot-shaped toe box with a steel toe, the sole is flat, and it’s reasonably light and flexible while still offering the necessary features of a safety shoe.

Here are the tech specs of the Birkenstock QS700:

  • 200 joule steel toe cap with a scratch-resistant cap guard protects the forefoot.
  • Outsole is nonslip, metal-free, and oil- and petrol-resistant. Provides for energy absorption around the heel and is penetration-resistant.
  • shoe is certified in accordance with EN ISO 20345:2011
  • meets the requirements of protection category S3

There are two different options for the uppers: water-resistant smooth leather, or a vegan option made with water-resistant microfiber (WRU) that offers antistatic protection.

The cork insole is pretty stiff. It is removable, so I recommending replacing it with a flat , flexible insole like one of the cork insoles in this post these that offers a few millimeters of cushion without affecting flexibility. This makes this wide toe box work boots overall much more flexible compared to the original insole.

These wide toe safety boots are available in sizes EU35 to 48. For a low cut version of this safety shoe, check out the Birkenstock QS500. If you do not need the steel toe cap, you can opt for the QO500.

Where to buy the Birkenstock QS700:

United States and Europe – The two best options I’ve found to get these Birkenstock steel toe boots to the US or EU are as follows:

  • ZaMi website (zapatillas-minimalistas.com): This is Spanish minimalist shoe website that ships them worldwide, including to the US. The boots are 140,00 € (tax included to the US), plus 30 € for shipping, so the total comes to 170,00 € if you’re ordering from the US.  Once you’re on the ZaMi website, search “Birkenstock” and the options will pop up.
  • German Amazon (amazon.de): Ordering on the German Amazon website seems to work for most European countries. If you’re ordering to the US, it seems to work best if you initially select a European country as your shipping destination, and then later put in your actual US address as the delivery address in the checkout process. If I select the US as the delivery location on the product page, it says it “Delivery cannot be dispatched to selected location.” Several people have reported that they have successfully had these delivered to the US from amazon.de. Deliver took about 3 weeks.

United Kingdom – If you’re ready to purchase this wide toe box safety boot and located in the UK, you’re in luck! You can order them directly from Birkenstock. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Birkenstock will ship these to the US or EU.

If you need work boots, but they don’t have to be steel toe boots, then check out these options:
