Looking for USA-made barefoot shoes? In this Softstar barefoot shoes review, I test their most popular styles—from moccasins to sandals—to see if they’re worth it.

Made-in-the-USA shoes are hard to come by, and that’s especially true for barefoot shoes. But, there is one brand that is carefully crafting a full line of barefoot shoes: Softstar Shoes.

I originally came across them years ago when I was searching for leather moccasins for my oldest child. I wanted something soft and flexible as he was learning to walk, and Softstar moccasins fit the bill perfectly.

Over the years, they’ve steadily expanded their collection to include everything from Birkenstock-style sandals and delicate ballerines to rugged hiking boots and their extra-wide Primal Amocs.

In 2025, Softstar took another big step in growing their line through the acquisition of another US-based barefoot shoe brand, SOM footwear, which focuses on sneakers.

In this review, I’ll share what makes Softstar Shoes so unique, plus my honest thoughts on the different styles I’ve tried along the way.

About Softstar Shoes

Softstar is a small, family-run company based in Oregon that has been handcrafting minimalist shoes for nearly 40 years. Their focus is on natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and keeping feet healthy and free. Here are a few things that set them apart:

  • Made in the USA – Every pair is handcrafted in their Oregon workshop by skilled artisans.
  • Natural materials – They use high-quality leather, sheepskin, and Vibram soles, with many eco-conscious options.
  • Customizable designs – Many styles can be personalized with your choice of colors, trim, and sole.
  • Extra-wide options – Their Primal line is one of the widest fitting barefoot shoes available.
  • Long barefoot legacy – They started out making soft-soled moccasins for kids back in 1984 and have grown into a full line for all ages.
  • Handmade quality – Each shoe is carefully crafted in small batches with attention to detail you don’t often see in modern footwear.

Sizing Reference

Softstar using their own sizing convention, so be sure to check their size chart before you order. I’ve found their sizing very style-dependent, so recheck for each type of shoe that you order. As a reference, my feet are 23.3cm in length and medium width at just over 9cm.

Softstar Barefoot Shoe Reviews

Softstar Ballerines

Softstar Ballerine Flat, Best barefoot dress shoes for women
  • Elegant, versatile design
  • High-quality leather with custom color options
  • Regular and wide width option
  • Regular fit is slightly tapered
  • Low toe volume

The Ballerines are Softstar’s take on the classic ballet flat, and they’re easily one of the prettiest barefoot dress shoes out there. They’re handcrafted from soft, high-quality leather that stretches and molds to your foot with wear. You can choose from their rotating collection of 3–4 seasonal colors or go all out with a custom design from over 40 different shades. My pair is the shiny platinum, which in person looks like a light gold with a touch of warmth. The simple, elegant design works well for both casual wear and dressier outfits.

A thoughtful detail is the rubber patch on the back of the heel. It’s a spot that usually takes a beating on leather flats—I’ve had some get shredded from driving—so this extra layer goes a long way in keeping them looking nice.

The outsole is a 4mm Vibram Cherry sole paired with a 5mm foam insole—one of the squishier barefoot dress shoe setups I’ve tried. That extra bit of padding makes them softer underfoot than many other minimalist flats.

Fit and sizing: Fit-wise, the Ballerines are on the narrower side compared to other Softstar styles. The regular width has a slight taper and can feel a little tight in the toe box. They still have a lot more room than any of my old ballet flats and the leather is very soft, but my toes don’t exactly have room to wiggle. The shoe is also fairly low volume over the toes, so I sometimes feel pressure on my toenails. They do come in a wide width, but on my feet that option ends up feeling a little too roomy. I have a Softstar size 6 Regular, which is just long enough for my 23.3cm feet.

SOM Footwear Mesa Sneakers

  • Cute and versatile canvas sneakers
  • Moderate cushion for those that want it
  • Higher price point

I definitely can’t claim to know every barefoot shoe brand these days—new ones seem to be popping up all the time—but since the number of US-based brands is still relatively small, I was surprised when I heard that Softstar had acquired another American company…and it was one I hadn’t even heard of.

That brand was SOM (Sense of Motion) Footwear, based in Colorado. They specialized in wide toe box, zero-drop shoes designed to handle the rugged terrain of the Rockies. With the acquisition, SOM’s sneakers will now be produced out of Softstar’s Oregon workshop.

The SOM Mesa Sneakers are simple, casual canvas shoes with a moderate 15mm stack height (including a 5mm removable insole—so you can pare them down a bit if you prefer). The toe box is fairly rounded, but the taper happens late enough that my toes don’t feel pushed in.

I’ve been wearing them for the past few weeks, and they’ve been cute, versatile, and comfortable. While they wouldn’t be my top choice for hiking, they’ve been perfect for everyday wear and walks along our greenway.

Fit and sizing: I have plenty of width and volume in these, so I’d say they’re best for medium-width, medium- to high-volume feet. I’m wearing size women’s 7. Softstar’s size chart gives recommendations by foot length range, but since I like a little extra room, I went with the size just above—as I was at the upper end of the smaller size.

Primal RunAmoc

Softstar primals barefoot shoes for wide feet
  • Extra Wide Primal toe box
  • Soft, flexible leather upper
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Some durability issues
  • Low toe volume

The Primal RunAmoc is one of Softstar’s most barefoot-friendly shoes, designed with their signature extra-wide Primal toe box. If you’ve ever struggled to find a shoe that truly lets your toes spread, this is about as wide as it gets. That said, like other Softstar models, they run low in volume over the toes. The end of the toe box is reinforced with a rubber layer for durability, which is great for longevity but also means it won’t stretch the way the rest of the leather does. Personally, I prefer a little more vertical space above my toes—especially in a running or hiking shoe.

On the upside, they’re lightweight and versatile. The leather upper is soft and molds nicely to your foot over time, while the flexible sole keeps ground feel intact.

Durability seems to be a mixed bag. I haven’t had any issues with my own pairs of Softstar shoes coming apart, but I did notice a few reviews on their site mentioning the sole separating. Since the Primal RunAmoc is designed for running and hiking, it may just be taking more of a beating than a casual everyday sneaker.

Fit and sizing: Best for extra-wide feet but with lower volume over the toes. I recommend sizing up from what the chart suggests, especially if you like a little more room to work with.

Camino Sandals

Softstar Camino, minimalist sandals like Birkenstocks
  • Minimalist take on a Birkenstock-style sandal that maintains the aesthetic
  • Two versions: cushioned (15mm)/lite (7mm )
  • Good transition option
  • Less ground feel and flexibility than most barefoot sandals

Softstar was one of the first brands to give us a minimalist take on the ever-popular Birkenstock Milano, while still staying true to the original aesthetic.

The Camino sandals come in two versions: a 15mm stack height and a 7mm stack height “Lite.” Many barefoot sandals are ultra thin, so the 15mm Camino stands out as one of the few options for those who want a cushioned yet still flexible sole. This version is built with a 5mm Vibram outsole, a 6mm Vibram midsole, and a foam-and-suede footbed. You do give up some ground feel and flexibility, but it’s still far less structured than a Birkenstock—making it a good transition shoe if you’re not quite ready for super-thin sandals.

The Lite version strips out most of that cushioning. While it’s thinner, it still feels a bit stiff underfoot compared to other barefoot sandals.

Fit & Sizing: I’m wearing a size 6U, and they’re just long enough. Because of the foam topper, the footbed isn’t completely flat, so you lose a bit of usable length compared to the outsole measurement. Softstar’s size guide lists size 6U for feet 23–23.9 cm long, but I wouldn’t recommend pushing the upper end of that range. My feet are 23.3 cm, and they’re right at the edge of the cushioned bump. For the best fit, I’d suggest sticking to the lower half of the size range, and if you’re at the upper half, size up.

Fireside Slippers

Softstar Fireside slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers
  • Luxuriously soft and warm sheepskin fleece lining
  • Lightweight and highly flexible
  • Good transition option
  • No sole protection beyond leather and fleece
  • Strictly an indoor slipper—wearing outside will wear down the soles quickly

While I don’t usually look forward to cold weather, there’s something about sinking my feet into the warmth and plushness of a cozy slipper that makes me smile. And the Softstar Fireside sheepskin slippers are easily the coziest pair I’ve tried.

These barefoot slippers are fully lined with thick sheepskin fleece, right down to the extra-fluffy insole. The insoles are removable and replaceable (Softstar even sells replacements on their website), which adds to their longevity.

There’s no additional material in the sole beyond the leather and fleece, which makes them incredibly lightweight and flexible—but also means they’re best suited as true house slippers rather than something you’d wear outdoors.

If you don’t need something with quite this much warmth, Softstar makes several other barefoot house slippers including leather moccasins for adults and wool slippers.

Moccasins and Ramblers for Toddlers and Kids

Softstar flexible leather moccasins for toddlers
  • Extremely soft and flexible—true barefoot feel for toddlers or add a Vibram sole
  • Wide sizing options extra wide and thick toddler feet
  • Soft moccasins are best for indoor or light outdoor wear only

Softstar began in the 1980s with moccasins, and they’ve stayed true to that heritage. Their toddler moccasins are some of the softest, most flexible barefoot shoes you’ll find—essentially a leather sock with just enough structure to protect little feet. They’re ideal as first-walker shoes when toddlers only need a touch of protection.

The moccasins come in a wide range of colors and can be customized for a fun, playful look. With a simple suede leather sole, they’re best for indoor wear or light outdoor use. Once your child is ready for a bit more durability, you can move up to the Ramblers, which swap the soft sole for a zero-drop 3mm Vibram Pyramid sole. Add a sheepskin insole, and you’ve got a cozy, all-season option.

Like many Softstar shoes, the moccasins and Ramblers are highly customizable—not just in color, but also in width. You can order regular, wide, or extra-wide. Softstar’s “regular” already runs wider than typical toddler shoes, and the wide/extra-wide options are perfect for what they affectionately call “potato feet.” If you’re unsure, their customer service is great for helping confirm sizing.

My son wore the Ramblers until he outgrew them, and they held up beautifully. They were easy for him to slip on, had solid grip, and even after the leather started to show wear, a quick polish made them look like new.

Final Thoughts

Softstar is a brand that really stands apart in the barefoot shoe world. They’ve built a reputation for handcrafted, made-in-the-USA shoes that combine natural materials, thoughtful design, and a barefoot-friendly philosophy. From delicate Ballerines to extra-wide Primal RunAmocs, there’s a sense of intention in every pair—they’re shoes that feel both personal and practical.

What I love most about Softstar is the variety: you can find slippers, moccasins, sandals, sneakers, and even hiking boots, all made with the same attention to foot health and comfort. Their sizing options (including narrow to extra-wide) and customization choices mean it’s possible to get something that actually fits your feet, especially for those who may have trouble finding something that fits from brands with more standard sizing.

That said, they aren’t perfect for everyone. Some models run low in toe volume, and the pricing is on the higher end. But if you value craftsmanship, ethical production, and shoes that let your feet move naturally, Softstar is one of the most reliable and versatile barefoot brands out there.

Mukishoes, sustainable barefoot shoes for kids and adults

What Makes Mukishoes a Noteworthy Barefoot Shoe Brand

How Barefoot Are Mukishoes?

Mukishoes is one of the most barefoot brands on the market. Across their sandals, sneakers, and boots, you’ll find:

  • Ultra-thin soles (typically 3.5mm rubber)
  • Zero drop
  • Naturally-shaped Toe Box
  • Lightweight Design

This is a brand that stays true to minimalist roots and doesn’t “compromise” with cushion. If you’re transitioning to barefoot shoes or used to thicker soles, Mukishoes might feel like a big shift—but if you love ground feel, they’re a dream.

Materials and Sustainability

Mukishoes is serious about using eco-conscious, natural materials:

  • Uppers are often made from recycled and organic cotton, leather, suede, and wool. Additionally, they frequently use deadstock fabrics, which is a great move to reduce waste, but can also mean that they run out of stock and can’t restock the style.
  • Outsoles are natural rubber
  • Footbeds include cork, leather, and wool combinations depending on the style.
  • Many models are vegan or plastic-free.

They manufacture in Portugal in small batches and emphasize fair labor and sourcing. The brand’s transparency and thoughtful material choices put them among the most sustainable barefoot shoe companies out there.

Durability

In my experience, Mukishoes holds up well—especially considering how thin and flexible the shoes are. That said, these are not bomb-proof boots. The shoes prioritize minimalism and breathability, so they’re best suited for urban wear, light activity, or dry conditions unless stated otherwise.

For the kids shoes, we’ve mostly used the cotton and wool uppers, which have lasted well, but do start to show some wear. For kid’s that are tougher on shoes, I’d opt for one of their leather styles, like the Nimbus Play. The soles also get worn down, but we haven’t had any get holes (see pictures of a well-loved pair of Mukishoes below).

Fit and Sizing

Mukishoes shoes generally fit:

  • Width: Narrow to Medium
  • Volume: Medium to high volume
  • Toe box shape:
  • Kids: medium to wide feet, average to high volume

Mukishoes has a size chart that lists insole length for both kids and adults sizes, which I’ve found to be accurate. This means I typically wear an EU38 in sneakers, size down to an EU37 for sandals, and size up to an EU39 in boots if I’m going to be wearing thicker socks. This is based on my 23.3cm foot length, medium width, and higher instep. My higher instep has enough space as is, but if I did want to add an extra insole for cushioning, they’d start to get a little tight. In this Mukishoes brand review, I’ll note any size particulars on the styles below.

Shipping and Returns

Shipping: Mukishoes ships worldwide from Portugal. Shipping to the U.S. is typically €20–25 and arrives in about 1–2 weeks.

Returns: Accepted within 30 days from EU and North America (buyer pays return shipping).

Mukishoes Reviews

Mukishoes are simple, but recognizable. Their sneakers have their own distinct shape and style, and stand out for some of their brighter and bolder colors (though they have plenty of neutrals too). For their sandals, they’ve taken inspiration from some of the top trending styles, but put their own minimalist spin on them.

Lyra Sneakers

Suede uppers | EU36 – 46 | €130

Mukishoes Lyra Theia sneakers, barefoot sneakers inspired by the Adidas Samba

I’ve been wearing some shoes with thicker soles lately, so slipping on the Lyra—with its barely-there sole—was a refreshing reminder of how much I love the feeling of unrestricted, natural movement. I recently added them to my round-up of barefoot alternatives to the Adidas Samba. The Lyra sneakers have an ultra-flexible 3.5 mm sole, topped only with a thin leather insole. I’m wearing the Theia in a pretty mint green suede, but they also come in white leather and suede.

Cloud Sneakers

Leather or cotton uppers | EU36 – 48 | €99 – €125

Mukishoes Raw Leather Cloud, white barefoot sneakers

The Cloud is Mukishoes’ most popular version of their classic sneaker, featuring a clean and minimal design in soft, chrome-free white leather. This design comes in several other uppers, including cotton and hemp. It’s part of their core lineup and showcases the brand’s commitment to using high-quality, natural materials without compromising on aesthetics.

Like all Mukishoes sneakers, the Cloud sits on their ultra-thin 3.5mm rubber sole, offering excellent flexibility and ground feel. The leather is soft right out of the box, and the unlined interior keeps things breathable and lightweight. These sneakers pair effortlessly with just about everything—from jeans to dresses—making them a versatile staple if you want a barefoot shoe that doesn’t look like one. Fit-wise, they work best for narrow to medium wide feet with average to high volume, and the natural leather does soften and mold to your foot with wear.

Hightop Sneakers

Linen, cotton, hemp or leather uppers | EU36 – 48 | €99 – €125

Mukishoes Hope, colorful barefoot sneakers for adults

Mukishoes’ classic sneakers come in a high-top version made with a range of natural materials, including linen, cotton, hemp, and leather. The colors and fabric combinations vary from season to season, but all feature Mukishoes’ signature 3.5mm natural rubber sole—ultra-flexible, zero-drop, and great for ground feel. These sneakers have a casual, understated look that pairs easily with everyday outfits.

Nazare Sandals

Suede uppers | EU36 – 48 | €89

Birkenstock-inspired sandals are everywhere, including in the barefoot shoe world. The Nazaré sandals by Mukishoes are one of the latest minimalist takes on the popular Birkenstock Milano style, and I’d say they’re my favorite of the bunch (find the whole round-up of barefoot sandals like Birkenstocks here).

Where Birkenstocks miss the mark with their thick, stiff, and heavily contoured footbed, the Nazaré sandals get it right with a much more minimal, natural feel. These have a 3.5mm outsole, plus a cork midsole and a suede insole.

The straps are also made of soft suede, but they don’t feel too thin where I forsee stretching out to be a big issue.

I went with an EU37 for these sandals, and have consistently worn an EU37 in Mukishoes sandals. These fit medium to wide feet well and offer good adjustability to accommodate different foot volumes.

Ibiza Sandals

Leather uppers | EU36 – 48 | €89

Mukishoes Ibiza sandals, leather barefoot sandals

I’ll start off by saying I like the Ibiza sandals a lot. I’ve been seeing some iteration of this design —with a toe loop, X-strap, and ankle strap —everywhere from Target to Madewell to a luxury brand that retailed over $400. These are a super cute barefoot alternative, and I was excited to try them.

Overall, they’re very comfortable. The leather is thick but unlined, so it still feels soft against the skin. The sole has a bit of bounce thanks to the cork midsole and leather footbed, which makes them feel like more than just rubber while still staying minimal. The total stack height is about 8mm, including the 3.5mm rubber outsole.

The biggest question with these will probably be whether the leather X-straps fit your foot well, since they’re not adjustable. I think Mukishoes designed them with extra room to accommodate wider or higher-volume feet, which means they’re a bit loose on my medium-width, high-instep feet. The front straps pucker slightly (see the photo on the right below), which isn’t my favorite look, but they don’t feel tight or press on my toes at all. The fit still feels secure because of the toe loop and ankle strap.

For sizing, I went with an EU37. These fit medium and wide width feet well. I measured 10cm from strap to strap in front of the toe loop on my EU37s.

Solstice Sandals

Cotton uppers | EU36 – 48 | €79

These Teva-style sandal are totally vegan, with cotton straps and a cork insole. The total stack height is 6mm, which provides just enough cushion. The front strap is adjustable, but still fits narrow to medium width feet best; these don’t run quite as wide as the Nazare or Ibiza sandals.

Soca Clog

Suede uppers | EU36 – 48 | €89

Mukishoes Soca Clog, like Birkenstock Boston Clogs

Revisiting Birkenstock for inspiration, Mukishoes recently released the Soca Clog. This style is similar to the Boston—or technically, the Tokio, since it has a back strap—but with a much more minimal barefoot design. Both the upper and footbed are made of soft suede, and like the first two on this list, it features a cork midsole that adds a touch of cushion.

They pulled in a lot of great elements from the original design, including adjustable buckles across the top of the foot and at the heel. I also appreciate the structured toe box—it helps the clog maintain its shape and gives your toes room to move.

The one detail I’m not totally sold on is the strip of leather that extends up the back of the heel by about 1.5cm. On traditional Birkenstocks, that area is part of the molded cork heel cup, but here it’s just soft suede and doesn’t really add function. I can’t help but wonder if a fully open back would have made more sense.

Sizing-wise, I think a EU37.5 would be ideal for me. I went with an EU38 (my usual size in their tennis shoes), and they feel a bit roomy without socks—but just right when I wear them with socks. They fit medium to wide feet and can fit adjust to higher volume. I have a high instep, and I’m using the smallest top buckle.

Chelsea Boots

Leather or Vegan Cork | EU 24 – 48

Mukishoes Chelsea Cork Boots | Sustainable Vegan barefoot chelsea boots

Of all the barefoot Chelsea boots I’ve tried, these are easily the lightest—especially the version with vegan cork uppers. They’re also available in leather and suede, with material options varying over the years. Mukishoes has even released them in kids’ sizes, which is a great addition.

Because they’re so minimal and lightweight, they’re an excellent option for fall and spring wear (and even mild summers). That said, I wouldn’t reach for these in truly harsh winter conditions—they’re not built for deep cold or wet weather.

I chose an EU38, and they fit well with thin socks. If I wanted to wear them with thicker socks, I’d definitely size up. And if you have wider or higher-volume feet, you’ll likely need to size up for a comfortable fit.

Pantufa Slippers

Felted wool uppers | EU36 – 48 | €75

Mukishoes Pantufa slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers

The Pantufa slippers are made from the softest wool I’ve ever felt—crafted from felted Spanish wool that feels luxuriously cozy. They feature Mukishoes’ signature rubber outsole, which is soft, flexible, and perfect for indoor wear. Overall, they’re a lightweight, warm, and minimalist slipper.

My only gripe is the elastic trim around the foot opening—it digs into the back of my heel a bit. I usually wear them with socks to avoid that, or just step on the backs when I need to slip something on quickly.

Kid’s Barefoot Shoes

Leather, cotton, or wool uppers | EU20 – 35 | €60 – €85

Mukishoes have been one of our family’s go-to barefoot shoe brands for kids. They offer the same lightweight, flexible design as the adult styles, but with a slightly roomier toe box—definitely a plus for growing feet. You can choose between velcro closures or elastic laces, and uppers come in a variety of materials like cotton canvas, wool (for winter), and leather.

They’re always added in new styles, but some of our favorites have been the Moss Kids with its high-cut, green hemp uppers, colorful eyelets and orange elastic laces, and the Nimbus Play with a low-cut white leather upper and velcro straps.

They also do a great job playing with color in a way that feels fun and fresh without being over the top. Most kids’ styles range from EU24 to EU35, but they recently added a toddler-friendly option in sizes EU20–23.

Final Thoughts

Mukishoes continues to stand out for their fully flexible barefoot shoes that combine eco-conscious materials with uncompromising minimalist design. If you value ground feel and thoughtful sustainability, Mukishoes is one of the most purpose-driven barefoot brands on the market.

Their sandals have become a real highlight in recent seasons, while the sneakers are perfect if you’re looking for an ultra-thin sole that allows for true natural movement.

About the Brand

Saguaro Shoes is an affordable barefoot shoe brand based in China. They make a wide range of styles, including sneakers, boots and water shoes, from EU24 – 48.

Saguaro has a highly responsive supply chain that quickly adapts to customer feedback and design trends. While they started out with a very basic athletic shoe that we loved (especially for kids), they now release a dozen or more new styles throughout the year.

They offer affordable alternatives to in-demand designs from both conventional and barefoot shoe brands. Bestsellers often sell out quickly after release, and are not always restocked.

The brand is pronounced suh·waa·row. In case you were wondering what that is, a saguaro is a tall armed cactus native to my home state of Arizona. If you’ve seen the standard cactus emoji, then you’ve seen a saguaro.

How barefoot are the Saguaro Shoes?

When evaluating just how barefoot a brand is, I look at these features of their shoes:

1) Wide, anatomically-shaped toe box: Saguaro shoes have several different sole shapes, and all of them are designed to let the toes naturally splay.

2) Thin, flat and flexible sole: On a spectrum, most Saguaro Shoes are on the very barefoot end of things due flat and very flexible soles. If the insoles are included, they do have some moderate cushion. Saguaro uses several different soles, which mean a different foot-shape, lug pattern and degree of flexibility; I’ll go over these different types in more detail below.

Sole types at Saguaro Shoes

One of the best ways to which pair of Saguaro shoes would be the best fit for you is by understanding the different sole types. In this Saguaro barefoot shoes review, we’ll go over the brand’s most popular sole types. Overall, the widest and most barefoot options are the toe sole and the cactus sole. Most shoes come with a removable insole, which usually adds about 3mm to the stack height. Some of the shoes also have a glued in midsole that can make the shoe stiffer or more cushioned.

These names aren’t anything official, I titled them up based on their design to make it easier to refer to them.

Saguaro Shoes Toe Sole, barefoot shoes

Toe Sole – Widest Sole | 6mm | I called this the toe sole because it has an outline of each of the spots for the toes, though they are not individually separated like Vibram FiveFingers. This is the outsole used on Saguaros first style, the Smart athletic shoes. The rubber is soft and grippy, which makes them great for all kinds of outdoor activities. Because they are a softer rubber, my son experienced noticeable wear on the soles when he consistently wore them for running and playing on hard surfaces. They still lasted the whole summer for us.  Popular styles that use this sole: Smart II, Vitality III, Will II Lite, Vitality, Fast

Cactus sole from Saguaro Barefoot Shoes

Cactus sole – Wide Sole | 5mm | This is the sole used for most casual shoes. Aptly named as the stripes are reminiscent of a barrel cactus. When I compared the insoles, these are just slightly narrower than the toe sole. Popular styles that use this sole: Luck I, Agile II, Wish III

Hiking sole from Saguaro Barefoot Shoes

Hiking Sole – Medium width sole | 5mm | This sole is used for many of Saguaro’s athletic and hiking shoes. It has a shallow lug pattern to offer grip, but it’s not so intense that it’s used on some casual shoes too. When I compared the insoles, they are the same as the Cactus sole, but they feel noticeably narrower when worn (specifically around the pinky toe). Visually, it looks like there is more of a taper there too. Because of this, it suits those with narrow and slope-shaped feet best. Those with wider feet can try sizing up for more toe space, especially in the boot styles. Popular styles that use this sole: Wish I, Nova I, Rise I Winter boots

Sole on barefoot winter boots by Saguaro Shoes

Winter Toe Sole – Wide Sole | 5mm | This is a rugged update to the toe sole, with deeper lugs. The insole is the same width as the toe sole, but these have a narrower feel as the shoes are lined with faux fur. I go up one size in these compared to most Saguaro Shoes, considering both the lining and the use of thicker winter socks. Popular styles that use this sole: Will II winter boots

Kid's Casual sole from Saguaro Barefoot Shoes

Kid’s Casual | 4mm | This sole is used on many of the kid’s more casual shoes, from summer slip-ons to boots. The summer shoes using this sole are very flexible, but some of the kid’s winter boots have an additional midsole layer glued in that makes them stiffer.

Saguaro Shoes Kid's Active Sole

Kid’s Active | 5mm | This sole pattern offers more grip for athletic shoes and hiking boots.  Styles that use this sole: Kid’s Brave

Materials and Sustainability

Saguaro exclusively uses synthetic vegan materials. Most of the sneakers are made with mesh, knit, or suede microfiber. The boots use PU leather and suede microfiber. All Saguaro shoes are made in China. They do not provide additional information about materials sourcing or manufacturing.

Durability

Since Saguaro’s shoes are substantially less than a lot of other barefoot shoe brands, a top concern is the trade off in durability and quality. I would say that price is an indicator of quality—it’s hard to expect a $50 have the same materials and workmanship as a $150 sneaker. Overall, we’ve been happy with the comfort and longevity of our Saguaro Shoes. My son has used both summer and winter shoes as his main shoe for the season, and they’ve lasted the entire time. The use of materials like mesh, knit and other synthetics along with manufacturing in a lower cost location helps keep costs down.

Fit and Sizing

Since Saguaro’s shoes are substantially less than a lot of other barefoot shoe brands, a top concern is the trade off in durability and quality. I would say that price is an indicator of quality—it’s hard to expect a $50 shoe to have the same materials and workmanship as a $150 sneaker. The use of materials like mesh, knit and other synthetics along with manufacturing in a lower cost location helps keep costs down.I’ll share my fit and sizing recommendations based on my experience. My feet are 23.3cm long, 9.1cm wide, with a higher instep and narrow ankles. If you need to measure your feet, check out this guide.

I most often wear an EU37 in sandals, an EU38 in sneakers and an EU39 in boots, but this can vary among brands and styles. I find that most Saguaro shoes with the Cactus and Toe Sole run true to size, and usually wear an EU38.

Most Saguaro Shoes fit medium to wide width and accommodate medium to high volume. As they’re constantly releasing new designs and new soles, fit can vary between the styles.

Saguaro Barefoot Shoes Review

We’ve worn many barefoot shoes from Saguaro over the years, and here’s a few of our favorites.

Adults and Kids Barefoot Shoes from Saguaro Shoes

Casual Barefoot Shoes and Sneakers

Casual Barefoot Sneakers

Affordable barefoot shoes from Saguaro Shoes that use the cactus sole

All of these casual barefoot shoes use the cactus sole. Most of them have a pretty similar fit and feel, so it’s more about the upper materials or colors you prefer. The styles with knit or mesh uppers are great as breathable sneakers for summer. With the included insole, these have a stack height of about 9mm; this moderate cushion and the affordable price point makes these a great barefoot shoe for beginners.

  • Bliss I | $50 | super breathable mesh upper
  • Agile II | $50 | stretchy knit upper with sock-like fit
  • Wish III | $60 | faux leather and mesh for a sporty sneaker look
  • Luck | $50+ | This is my favorite style from Saguaro sneakers (the pink and purple above), but some designs are currently sold out. The uppers are a stretchy knit.
Bliss Casual barefoot shoes by Saguaro Shoes

Athletic and Hiking Shoes

Smart II Shoes

EU24 – 46 | Knit Mesh | Toe Sole| $43+

Barefoot Trail Runners from Saguaro Shoes

This was the original shoe that introduced us to the brand. Before Saguaro developed a whole line of barefoot shoes, they mainly sold this trail runner with a stretchy knit upper and a soft rubber sole. This toe sole has great flexibility and ground feel. My son wore them the whole summer, and they were excellent for hiking and outdoor play.

The Smart shoes come in adult and child sizes in a large range of colors.  These styles have a similar design and use the same toe outsole, but have slightly different upper materials: Vitality and Fast

Nova I Sneakers

EU36 – 46 | Microfiber Suede and Mesh | Hiking Sole | $70 |

Saguaro Nova barefoot sneakers for the gym

The design of these sneakers reminds me of another popular barefoot shoe brand. The Nova barefoot sneakers use the Saguaro hiking sole that has shallow lugs. The uppers are made from stretchy knit and microfiber that creates a sock-like fit. They can still be tightened down with the laces for a more secure fit. They can run a little warm, and as they use the hiking sole, they feel a bit tapered (best for narrow, sloped feet).

Winter Boots

Will II Winter Barefoot Shoes

EU25 – 48 | Microfiber Suede | Faux Fur Lined | Toe Sole | $58+ | Splash-resistant

Will II affordable barefoot winter boots from Saguaro Shoes

My son wore these in our cold but relatively dry winter last year and loved them. The Will II barefoot booties are lined with a faux fur that come up over the ankles, so they’re extra cozy. This year, they’ve upgraded to the winter sole with deeper lugs, which should provide even better traction. These are a great pick if you want a barefoot winter boot that’s lightweight, warm, and still has plenty of ground feel and flexibility. They’re available in both kid’s and adult sizes.

Saguaro Shoes labels these as “splash-resistant.” Some of the materials do have some water-repellency, but they they’re not specifically treated and there is no separate membranes. I wouldn’t take these out in heavy rains or snow, but as they say, they can withstand the occasional splash.

Ambition II Winter Barefoot Shoes

EU36 – 48 | Microfiber Suede | Cactus sole | $90

Fully lined with a fluffy faux fur and a taller shaft, the Ambition II are one of Saguaro’s warmest barefoot winter boots. Keep in mind that also takes up some space in the boot, so it can be better to size up, and may make them a tighter fit for those with high volume feet. These have suede microfiber uppers that have some water-resistance, but they’re not fully waterproof. They’re easy to slip-on with a convenient side zipper. I prefer these to the Ambition I boots as this version uses the Cactus sole with a wider and more natural foot shape.

Rise I Winter Barefoot Shoes

EU36 – 48 | Microfiber Suede | Hiking sole | $100 | Waterproof

The Saguaro Shoes Rise I winter boots are a cute and functional option for colder months that come in pastel shades of pink, purple and blue. These mid-calf microfiber suede boots feature waterproof materials to keep feet dry, while the cozy faux fur collar and insulating cotton lining ensure warmth. These use Saguaro’s hiking sole, which left my little toes feeling a little cramped–if you have medium width feet or above, you may need to size up in this style, or look to one of the styles that use a different sole.

Brisk I Rain Boots

EU24 – 45 | Rubber | Unlined and Faux Fur Lined versions | $59+ | Waterproof

Wide toe box on Saguaro Shoes Brisk barefoot rain boots

These tick all the boxes for a solid barefoot rain boot: they’re fully rubber and they have a taller shaft cinches at the top. They also perfectly align with the criteria I use for a healthy, comfortable boot, including a wide toe box, and a flat and flexible sole. As you’d expect from a rain boot, these are waterproof.

The rubber shaft is waterproof but pretty thin—if you get the unlined version, it’s a little floppy. But if you get the lined version, it’s warmer and has more structure. They recently updated the sole for more tread.

Using the discount code KELLY15, the unlined boot is $51 and the lined boot is $60.

Kid’s Shoes

Many of Saguaro’s barefoot shoes are the same for both kid’s and adults. There are kid’s shoes included in the above, but here are kid’s only styles, or ones where the kid’s version are slightly different from the adults.

Kid’s Agile Casual Shoes

EU25 – 35 | Knit Uppers | Kid’s Casual Sole | $46

Kid's slip-on barefoot shoes from Saguaro Shoes

These cute and casual slip-ons are the perfect shoes for toddlers. You don’t have to worry about laces, and the stretchy knit uppers are easy to get on and off. The Kid’s casual sole is plenty flexible, and even wraps up around to create a toe bumper.  The Agile comes in adult sizes as well, but the toddler and child sizes use the Kid’s Casual sole.

Kid’s Wonderland I Barefoot Shoes

EU26 – 36 | Suede Microfiber Uppers | Kid’s Casual Sole| $60

Idea for shoulder seasons like fall and winter, these barefoot sneakers feature a soft fleece lining. My 9 year-old loves that these look like a cool sneaker, but have the warmth of a winter boot. They’re easy on/off thanks to the side zipper, but if the zipper isn’t secured tightly with the velcro tab on top, it can sometimes come unzipped while being worn.

Kid’s Brave I

EU26 – 36 | microfiber and mesh uppers | Kid’s Active Sole | Waterproof | $70

The Brave boots are a great option for hiking and outdoor play thanks to the waterproof uppers and the use of the kid’s active sole, which has more lugs and grip. They’re easy on/off with elastic laces and a velcro top strap. They fit my toddlers wider, higher volume feet well.

Kid’s Jumpy Boots

EU26 – 36 | microfiber uppers | fleeced-lined | Kid’s Casual Sole | $69

Saguaro Jumpy Boots, barefoot winter boots for kids

The Jumpy boots are ideal for cold, dry winters. They’re a cozy, fleece-lined boot that uses the kid’s casual sole, which means it has a solid toe bumper. The side zipper also makes these easier to slip on and off. Note these are not waterproof. Since they are fairly thickly lined, they have less space available in the boot, making them better suited to kid’s with lower volume feet.

Conclusion

Saguaro Barefoot Shoes offer an impressive combination of affordability, comfort, and versatility, making them a great choice for anyone looking to experience minimalist footwear without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a seasoned barefoot shoe enthusiast or new to the concept, Saguaro delivers quality and durability at a price point that’s accessible for the whole family.

With a variety of styles, sizes, and designs, they cater to men, women, and children, ensuring everyone can benefit from the natural, flexible movement that barefoot shoes provide. While there are higher-end options on the market, Saguaro proves that you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy the benefits of minimalist footwear.

I hope this Saguaro barefoot shoes review helps you find a perfect fit for your next barefoot shoe.

Find affordable barefoot and minimalist shoes, along with toe socks and other foot health gear on Amazon with free shipping and free returns.

If you’re just starting your journey of foot health and barefoot shoes, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start and which shoes to buy. And if you’ve been holding out because you don’t want to spend a fortune on expensive shoes and high shipping and return costs, then Amazon is a great place to start.

Several barefoot shoe brands also sell on Amazon (like Vivobarefoot and Xero Shoes), and there are a number of affordable brands that are exclusive to Amazon.

You can find all of the barefoot shoes, socks and foot health gear I recommend on My Amazon Storefront.

Amazon Prime Day Deals for Barefoot Shoes

July 8 – 11, 2025 | Amazon Prime Day just starting!

I’ve combed through all the Amazon Prime Day deals on barefoot shoes, socks, and foot health gear—so you don’t have to! You’ll find everything I spotted in this curated list. While most of the discounts aren’t groundbreaking (pretty similar to last year), many styles from popular Amazon brands like WHITIN, Hobibear, and WateLves are $5–$10 off per pair, and the savings can still add up if you’re stocking up. I did find several surprises, like a few Xero Shoes for $50, Flux runners for under $100, and a few dollars off per pair of my favorite toe socks. Don’t forget to check out accessories too, like toe spacers and massage balls.

Barefoot Shoe Brands on Amazon

Here is a quick list of barefoot shoes available on Amazon in my storefront. The first two are only available on Amazon, while the others are also available on their own respective websites.

WHITIN Shoes

WHITIN Shoes on Amazon, Barefoot Shoes For Beginners

WHITIN is the main brand I’d recommend on Amazon. They make very affordable minimalist shoes, with most styles around $40. They’ve greatly expanded their selection over the last few years, so it’s fairly easy to find a simple, but versatile casual shoe. They’re not an Amazon-owned brand, but currently seem to only sell on this platform.

I include WHITIN shoes in my blog post on the best barefoot shoes for beginners as most of their styles have a wide, foot-shaped toe box, the sole is flat and reasonably flexible, and they do have some moderate cushion. A little bit of cushion can help someone that is new to the concept of barefoot shoes through the transition as their body adjusts to less support and padding in their shoes.

Quick Tip for Ordering Whitin Shoes

WHITIN makes both barefoot and traditional shoes. It has the same style of shoe in both a barefoot and a traditional version, and sometimes it still lists terms like “wide” and “wide toe box” in the narrower traditional version (super confusing, I know).

The best way to differentiate is to make sure that the shoes have “wide” in the sizing, as shown in the screenshot below (i.e., the size is “8 wide” NOT just 8).

All of the casual barefoot WHITIN shoes with an anatomical toe box are listed on the “Wide Barefoot” Tab on WHITIN’s Amazon storefront. The Trail Runners can be found on the “Barefoot” tab.

Find a full review of WHITIN minimalist shoes here.

Hobibear

Hobibear is another brand that sells on Amazon. They look very similar to WHITIN, so this may be the case of two companies using the same supplier/manufacturer, and just changing small details on the shoes (like color, branded tag, etc). The main style is the barefoot casual fashion sneaker. They also have a lot of non-barefoot shoes. Find the Hobibear barefoot shoes on Amazon here. Whitin and Hobibear have a very similar price point (around $40), so it mostly comes down to which of the small details or colors you prefer. You can purchase both Hobibear and Whitin from Amazon, so that makes both shipping and returns free and easy.

Shoes that look the Same (with different brand names)

I’ve seen more and more of this lately–what looks like the same exact shoe, but sold by several different brand names. This especially seems to be the case for the trail runner/water shoe style of barefoot shoes. My guess is that a certain factory has made a prototype, and many different companies are purchasing the same shoe and simply adding their own brand name to the product. The funny thing is, there is a large variability in price.

For example, in the screenshot below, the white and pink sneakers look exactly the same, but they’re being sole by three different brands at three different prices. I think some of these companies are trying to establish a “brand name” and are using that as a reason to hike the price up. For these types of shoes, you really shouldn’t be spending more than $30 to $40.

The Ten Little shoe brand makes cute and colorful minimalist shoes for toddlers and kids, including their classic everyday sneaker, sandals, rain boots and snow boots. Plus, most styles are under $50. Learn all about the brand in this Ten Little Shoes Review

Ten Little made a colorful splash onto the barefoot shoe scene back in 2020 with their simple but classic velcro sneakers for kids in a whole rainbow of colors. The vegan leather uppers now come in two shades of pink, two shades of blue, purple, red, and metallic silver just to name a few. Ten Little has expanded to include all the styles your little one will need, including sandals, rain boots, snow boots and slippers.

Ten Little Shoes Review, Minimalist shoes for toddlers and kids

About the Brand

Let’s learn all about the brand in this Ten Little shoes review.

Are Ten Little shoes barefoot shoes?

Are Ten Little Shoes barefoot shoes?

When evaluating a shoe for how well it aligns with the barefoot features, this is what I consider:

1 How foot-shaped is the shoe? Ten Little shoes feature an anatomically foot-shaped sole. Based on the width of the toe box, I’d recommend for kids up to medium width. For wide or extra wide, your child would probably feel more comfortable in other brands.

2 How flat and flexible is the sole? Ten Little shoes are zero-drop, so they easily check this off. The sole for the everday sneaker is decently flexible, and on a scale of the 1 to 5, with 5 being the most flexible (like a soft-soled moccasin or Wildling shoes) and 1 being a conventional kid’s shoe, these are like a 3.5. The soles also seem to soften with wear, so after a few uses they’re similar to a lot of barefoot shoe brands. They include a removable foam insole that is a few millimeters thick, which you can include for comfort, or remove for more volume and ground feel.

The extra material on the sole does mean they are more durable, so they can be especially good for a kid that’s hard on their shoes or for use during a particular activity, like on a balance bike or scooter when kids are sometimes using their feet as the brakes.

Wide, foot-shaped sole of ten little shoes for toddlers

Materials & Design

Ten Little shoes are all vegan. The faux leather on the everyday sneakers looks nice, maintains its color, and proved to be pretty durable for my toddler.

The soles are natural rubber and designed to be non-slip.

Different size shoes for different size feet

To be more inclusive, Ten Little offers a few options, like ordering different sizes for left and right feet. Most people don’t have exactly symmetrical feet in length or width, but usually fit within the same size. If your child’s foot measurements vary more significantly, simply select different sizes for the left and right feet here.

Velcro Strap Extenders for AFO or SMO orthotics or high volume feet

Once again, Ten Little recognizes that one shoe doesn’t necessarily fit every foot. Their velcro strap extenders allow for more room in their minimalist shoes. These extenders can help those that wear AFO or SMO orthotics get a better fit. They are also great for kids with high volume feet that need longer velcro straps.

Affordable barefoot option

With most pairs coming in under $50 (the everyday sneakers are $44), Ten Little shoes are one of the more affordable barefoot shoe brands for kids. For more options, check this list of the best affordable barefoot shoes for kids.

Ten Little Fit and Sizing

Use the printable Fit Finder of the Ten Little website to determine your child’s size. I’ve used this each time I’ve ordered from Ten Little and always ended up with the right size.

Once you’ve ordered from Ten Little, you can use the size guide that’s printed inside the box for yoru next order. The insoles also come with sizing markings, so you know when it’s time to size up!

Most styles are available in little kid’s US 6 – 13. The Youth Sneakers are available in US13.5 – Youth 4. They also have first walker shoes in toddler sizes US 3 – 6.

Ordering and Returns

Ten Little is a US-based company, and currently offers shipping to all 50 states in the US. Standard shipping is free for orders above $75 within the continental US. For orders below $75, there is a $6.99 standard shipping fee.

You can return all Ten Little shoes for free within 30 days of your order. Orders made from November 1 through December 31 will be eligible for an extended holiday return window through January 31.

Ten Little Shoes Review

Everyday Original Minimalist Sneaker

$44 | Toddler Sizes 4 – 13 for velcro | Youth Sizes US 13.5 – Y4 for laces | Vegan leather or canvas uppers

Ten Little Shoes, Affordable Barefoot Shoes for Toddlers

The Everyday Original sneaker by Ten Little is designed to be easy to put on and comfortable to wear. My priority is foot health first, so I appreciate that these have enough room for the toes and allow for plenty of movement with the flexible sole.

I’ve never had an issue with my toddler wearing them, so for me that’s a good sign that nothing about them is bothersome.

There are a few variations of these sneakers, including canvas uppers and high tops. For the larger youth sizes, they swap out the velcro for laces.

Splash Sandals

US Sizes Toddler 4 – 13 | Retail: $39

Looking for a more foot-friendly version of Crocs or Natives? The Ten Little Splash Sandals are made from EVA foam, so they’re very lightweight and very flexible. The non-skid soles and a textured insole help minimize slips on wet surfaces. My three-year-old used them for a full summer and they held up amazing well, including the velcro. He used them for the beach, pool and splash pads.

Similar to Crocs and the Jibbitz charms, you can get extra charms to adorn the velcro strap on your splash sandals–choose from stars, rainbows and rocket ships.

Everyday Sandals

$39 | Toddler Sizes 4 – 13 | Quick-dry uppers

Ten Little minimalist closed toe sandals

We tried out these everyday sandals this summer, and I really like them as a sturdier-closed toe sandal option for things like riding bikes and scooters. The uppers are water-resistant and quick-dry, so you can wear them to the pool or the beach and not worry about getting them wet.

Riding a micro mini scoot with ten little minimalist sandals

Chelsea Boots

$56 | Toddler Sizes 6 – 13 | Vegan leather uppers

Ten Little Minimalist Chelsea Boots for Toddlers

Everything is cuter in mini sizes, especially boots! These Chelsea boots were a super cute addition to the Ten Little line up. The side zipper creates a wide opening to slip in chubby toddler feet. The outside of the heel has some extra padding, which creates a more secure fit.

Rain Boots

$46 | Toddler Sizes 6 – 13 | Rubber

Best Rain Boots for Kids & Toddlers

What toddler doesn’t love jumping through puddles? These minimalist rubber rain boots hit tall enough that they’re great for wading through shallow streams and stomping through most puddles. We’ve worn these lots of time out in the rain, and even wading through streams, and never had an issue with wet feet—they’re full rubber, so that wasn’t a big question to begin with. These rain boots are surprisingly flexible, which means kids don’t have to lug around clunky boots and can just enjoy their time outside.

Snow Boots

$59 | Toddler Sizes 6 – 13 | Water-resistant uppers

Ten Little Minimalist Snow Boots for kids

When it comes to snow boots, my priority shifts to keeping feet dry and warm. Since this is the first season Ten Little has offered these snow boots, we haven’t had a chance to test them in the snow. The next best thing was testing them under running water.

They may actually fare better in the snow as that isn’t quite as intense as water directly shooting at the boot, but I could feel the moisture start to creep in after they’d been under the water for 30 seconds or so. Based on that, I’d use these for short times out in the snow, or if you’re going to be on top of the snow, and not so much totally buried in it.

The materials are water-resistant, but not fully waterproof, and that showed when I tested them.

I appreciate that these boots are foot-shaped and roomy, so you can add thicker socks (consider sizing up from your child’s normal size or double checking the size while wearing thick socks). The soles are flat, but these are much thicker with deeper lugs, so they’re not super flexible. I’m happy to compromise on flexibility for warmth and traction when it comes to snow boots, especially as you’re not really going to have a normal walking gait when you’re tromping through snow anyway.

The velcro strip up the entire side of the boot once again means these are easy to get on and off. The inside is lined with fleece to add warmth, and the toggle snow collar helps snow from dumping in from the top.

Getting the perfect combination of barefoot features plus warmth and waterproofness can be really tough–we’ve got our favorite picks for kids barefoot winter boots listed here. Overall, I like the fit, design and features of the Ten Little snow boot, but they need to add a fully waterproof membrane to make these fully functional as snow boots.

Help your little one’s feet stay warm this winter with the best barefoot winter boots for kids.

Finding healthy, comfortable shoes for kids can be surprisingly hard. When I say healthy, I mean shoes with a flat, flexible sole and a shape that actually follows the natural shape of a child’s foot. These are often called barefoot or minimalist shoes, and they give kids protection while still letting them move the way their feet are designed to move. They help build strong foot muscles, support natural posture, and keep toes from getting cramped in a narrow toe box.

Winter makes the search even trickier, because not only are you looking for everyday comfort, but a shoe that can stand up to cold, wet, or snowy weather.

This guide rounds up the best minimalist winter shoes and barefoot boots for kids, all tested for the key barefoot characteristics along with warmth and durability. I’ve broken it out into barefoot winter boots for everyday wear and snow boots.

Everyday barefoot winter boots for kids with warm lining
Warm-lined barefoot winter shoes for kids from Mukishoes, BeLenka, Saguaro and Wildling

Best Barefoot Winter Boots for Kids

This list includes solid everyday options for cold weather. They’re either waterproof or water-resistant, so they can handle puddles, slush, and the occasional snowy adventure without sacrificing natural movement.

Saguaro Boots

$109 | Size EU 25 – 36 | Water-resistant | KELLY15 for 15% off

Saguaro is one of the most affordable barefoot shoe brands, and we’ve been really happy with the quality for the price. The tradeoff is that you’ll usually see more budget-friendly synthetics rather than leather, wool, or higher-tech materials, and their waterproofing isn’t the most reliable—so these are generally better suited for dry winter climates. The Macaron boots (R) offer some water resistance, but my son’s feet ended up wet after this trudge through the creek. They’re fine in some lighter rain or snow, but doing something like this will mean a kid with wet feet. They do have a lugged sole that gives decent grip in winter conditions.

The Jumpy boots (L) are another solid option for cold, dry days. They have microfiber uppers, a cozy fleece lining, and the same flexible sole Saguaro uses on their casual kids’ shoes—sturdy toe bumper included, but not a ton of lugs. The side zipper makes them easy to get on and off, but the thicker lining reduces internal volume, making them a better match for kids with lower-volume feet.

Reima Loikkii and Hyppii Waterproof Boots

Price: $90+ | US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | Waterproof | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Loikkii waterproof barefoot boots for kids

Reima’s goal is to create high-quality clothes and shoes to allow kids to comfortably explore the outdoors, so I was excited when they started offering barefoot shoes. They now have several barefoot-friendly winter boot styles. Two winter boots that have held up to a lot of outdoor play are the Hyppii for toddlers and the Loikkii for bigger kids. The overall design is similar, but the Hyppii have a wide-opening velcro strap that my three-year-old can easily manage on his own. The Loikkii use elastic laces instead, which tighten down quickly and stay put.

The soles are thin, flexible, and zero drop, and both styles have more volume than some of Reima’s other barefoot models, which worked really well for my toddler’s chunkier feet. They kept his feet warm and dry in rain and light snow, and I love how kid-friendly they are for independent on and off.

The tradeoffs: the shorter shaft means water can drip in from the top if your child loves splashing or wading deeper than they should, and the fit runs narrower than many other barefoot brands. They’re a great option for narrow feet, but may not work for wider foot shapes.

Wildling Winter Boots

$100+ | EU20 – 38 | Water-resistant | Free Shipping Code for first-time customers: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildlings pack an impressive amount of warmth into an ultra-lightweight, ultra-flexible barefoot shoe. Their winter lineup uses natural, cozy materials—like wool or tightly woven cotton canvas—for the uppers, and every winter model includes an integrated polyester membrane for added moisture protection. Transitional styles usually come with a cotton lining, while the warmest models feature a felted wool lining for extra insulation. Wool is a fantastic winter material because it naturally insulates and repels moisture, making it ideal for both the outer fabric and inner lining of a cold-weather shoe.

Some Wildling models come pre-treated for water repellency, while others need a treatment added at home (you’ll find this noted in the Care section of each style). We treat Wildlings as water-resistant rather than fully waterproof—they handle light moisture just fine, but they’re not the pair you want for pouring rain or deep snow. Most winter Wildlings come with their cupped sole now, which means more protection from the higher rubber sole. Wildlings don’t really have lugs to speak of, so I wouldn’t recommend them for situations where you need a lot of grip.

Wildling barefoot shoes for kids and adults

BeLenka Kids Winter Boots

$105+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | Code KELLY5 for 5% off

BeLenka has long been one of the strongest brands for barefoot winter boots, for both kids and adults. They offer several waterproof and warm-lined options, often using natural materials like merino wool. Their Winter Kids boots are a great everyday pick for cold weather—a classic leather lace-up with a water-repellent membrane and cozy merino lining. They also maintain the flexibility and foot-shaped feel you expect from a true barefoot shoe, which is why we like them for daily wear.

If you need something a bit more rugged with extra warmth and grip, check out BeLenka’s newer models like the Zippu and Elio.

Shapen Winter Boots

$109 | Size EU 25 – 36 | Water-resistant | KELLY5 for 5% off

Shapen has a few great options for kids’ barefoot winter boots. The Shapen Frosty boots were my three-year-olds boot of choice last year. These are nylon slip-on boots with an elastic drawstring around the middle of the shaft so you can cinch them for a snug fit. The one drawback is that, without a zipper, they don’t open any wider. My toddler has thicker feet, so getting them on the first few times took a little maneuvering. Once we figured out the right angle, it was totally doable, and after they were on, he didn’t want to take them off.

The nylon is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so these work best as everyday cold-weather boots. They’re great for chilly walks and playground time, but not the pair I’d choose for snow drifts or full-on winter storms.

Shapen also has several leather hightop and boots that are also great for colder days. The Urbaneer high-top sneakers are easy to get on and secure with three velcro straps. For something more fashion forward, they have mini versions of some of their most popular boots, including the Maverick lace-up boots and the Victory Chelsea boots.

Shapen Kids Winter Sneakers

Feelgrounds Boots

$94+ | Size EU22 – 37 | Waterproof or Water-resistant | KELLY5 for 5% off

Feelgrounds Patrol Winter Boots for Kids

Feelgrounds made mini versions of their popular vegan boots, the Patrol Winter and the Chelsea Boots. I’ve loved my Feelgrounds for years because they have such a great fit with plenty of toe space, and the kids’ styles are no different.

The Kids’ Patrol Winter boots have a fleece lining and a waterproof membrane, so these are the more heavy duty option. The Chelsea boot is water-resistant, and we’ve loved it as a dressy winter option.

Freet Tufee Junior

$90 | EU29 – 38 | Water-resistant | Code KELLY for 10% off

The Freet Tufee Junior boots have been a great option for winter hiking. They’re lightweight, nicely flexible, and have a grippy tread that gives kids solid traction on trails and wintery conditions. The uppers are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so they hold up well to damp conditions but aren’t the pair I’d choose for deep snow or trudging through puddles (my son had to test this and. yes, his feet did get wet).

One thing I really like is how easy they are for kids to manage on their own—the bungee laces and velcro strap make it simple to get a secure fit without any fiddly tightening. Overall, they’re a practical, foot-shaped barefoot boot that keeps natural movement front and center while still offering enough protection for active cold-weather adventures.

KEEN Kids’ Howser II Waterproof Chukka

$80 | Size Little Kids’ 8 through Big Kids’ 7 | Waterproof

KEEN shoes have a reputation for offering a wider toe box (at least among the conventional shoe crowd), but they rarely make the cut for my barefoot shoe posts. Most styles still taper a bit more than I like, and many run on the stiffer side. The KEEN Kids’ Howser boots, though, were a pleasant surprise. These little winter boots can actually fold into a ball, which puts them right in line with the flexibility I expect from my favorite barefoot kids’ brands. This sole is different than most of KEEN’s other winter boots, so you probably won’t find this flexibility on other styles.

They’re also built for genuinely cold weather. The Howser boots are rated to -4°F/-20°C thanks to KEEN.Warm insulation, which is a lightweight, charcoal bamboo–based insulation. The uppers are made from durable, water-resistant nylon, and the inside is lined with soft microfleece to keep feet cozy. These are still a bit of a compromise option due to the toe box and 7mm heel-to-toe drop, but if you’re looking for something warm, easily accessible, and durable, these KEENs are a solid option. Since this is a bigger name brand, old styles can sometimes make their way down to outlet retailers; I’ve seen these KEEN Kids’ boots at Sierra for $30.

KEEN Howser Chukka flexible winter boots for kids

Best Barefoot Snow Boots for Kids

Snowshoeing in barefoot winter boots

While some of the everyday boots above could work in light snow, if your child is out in the snow every day, you’ll want a higher shaft, full waterproofing, and extra warmth. These snow boots are built for colder, wetter days—they’re often lined with fleece or insulation and designed to handle slush and deep snow. They may be a bit stiffer than everyday boots, but that tradeoff provides warmth, traction, and protection, all while keeping a foot-shaped, zero-drop design.

Koel Rana Tex Wool Boots

$113+ | Sizes EU 24 – 43 | Waterproof | Code KELLY for 10% off at PedTerra

Barefoot Snow Boots for Kids from Koel

The Koel Rana has been our standout favorite for both warmth and waterproofing. Koel makes a few versions of this boot, but the one with the thick merino wool lining is the real MVP—super warm without feeling heavy or bulky. My kids have worn these for everything from snowy hikes to creek play, and they’ve spent hours with their feet in cold water. The Aqua Stop Tex membrane does an impressive job keeping feet dry for extended periods, far better than most “water-resistant” kids’ boots.

Even with all that insulation and protection, the Rana stays surprisingly lightweight and flexible, so kids can still move naturally instead of clomping around in stiff snow boots. The sole has grippy lugs for traction in winter conditions, and the overall design keeps the natural, foot-shaped fit Koel is known for. These are a fantastic choice if you want a true winter-ready barefoot boot without the bulk.

If you’re in the US, I’d recommend checking PedTerra first as they have free shipping and free returns. Otherwise, you can shop directly online at Koel.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Boot AT

$100+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | BSG20 for 20% off

The Vivobarefoot Tracker Boot has long been a favorite for its combination of barefoot feel and real outdoor performance. The kids’ version keeps that same spirit, with a waterproof design, cozy faux shearling lining, and a felt insole for extra warmth. A wide velcro strap makes them easy to get on and off, while the bungee toggle at the top helps keep snow and moisture out. The outsole has 2mm lugs for traction and a durable rubber bumper that adds protection and helps keep water from seeping in. It’s a great balance of warmth, flexibility, and weather protection for winter adventures.

My code throughout the year is BSG20 for 20% off. I have a special boosted code through November for 25% off: THEBAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE25

BeLenka Ailo Snow Boots

$110+ | EU20 – 38 | Waterproof | KELLY5 for 5% off

The BeLenka Ailo Junior snow boots have all the features you’d want: fully waterproof, warm fleece lining, and a new KidsThermoGrip outsole with good traction. The gusset under the velcro strap helps keep snow out, and they open wide so they’re easy to put on. The extra lining can mean they run a little small; I usually find the whole family sizes up for BeLenka’s winter boots.

Reima Ensilumi Snow Boots

Price: $90+ | US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | Waterproof | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima also released the Ensilumi, a barefoot snow boot for kids this year, but most sizes sold out super quickly! These are Reima’s warmest option, rated down to -20 °C (-4° F), with a waterproof membrane and taller shaft.

Ten Little Snow Boots

$59 | Toddler Sizes 6 – 13 | Water-resistant

These Ten Little snow boots are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so they’re best for light snow play or quick outings. When I tested them under running water, some moisture did make its way inside, which confirmed they’re not built for long, wet days or deep snow.

On the plus side, they’re nicely foot-shaped and spacious enough for thick socks, the soles are flat, and the full velcro opening makes them very easy to get on and off. They’re not super flexible due to the thicker sole and deeper lugs, but that’s a tradeoff I’m comfortable with in a true winter boot. The fleece lining also adds a good bump of warmth.

Overall, the fit and design are solid, but they’d need a fully waterproof membrane to function as a true snow boot.

Ten Little Minimalist Snow Boots for kids

How to make barefoot winter boots warmer for kids

Warmth can be a challenge in winter boots, barefoot or not. Because barefoot soles are thinner, kids can sometimes feel the cold creep in from underneath. Some brands include warmer insoles, but if you live in a really cold climate, it’s often worth adding your own or swapping in something extra cozy, like wool or sheepskin. Since barefoot shoes all have slightly different shapes, I usually buy a larger insole and trim it down for the best fit. Here are the insoles I’ve used:

DIY Wool Insoles | 6mm | $15 for sheet | While you can get insoles that fit specific barefoot shoe brands, you can also DIY wool insoles. Grab a sheet of 100% felt wool, trace the existing insole where you want to add a wool insole, and cut your own.

Sheepskin insole | These sheepskin insoles take up a lot of space, so they’re best for low volume feet or if you already sized up in the boots. The sheepskin will compress over time, so it may end up starting to feel a little loose after more wear. Since these don’t have a wide toe box, I ordered the biggest size and cut mine to the preferred shape.

Final Thoughts

Finding truly foot-friendly winter boots for kids can feel like a scavenger hunt, especially when you want warmth, weather protection, and a natural fit all in one package. The good news is that there are now more solid options than ever, whether you need an everyday boot for chilly walks, a waterproof pair for soggy play, or a rugged snow boot that can keep up with serious winter adventures.

As always, the right choice comes down to your child’s foot shape, your climate, and how (and where) your kid actually plays outside. Prioritize a foot-shaped toe box, a flat and flexible sole, and materials that match your weather. From there, you can layer in warmth, waterproofing, and the features that matter most to your family.

With the right pair of barefoot winter boots, your child can stay warm, comfortable, and moving naturally all winter long—and that’s the whole point.

For a barefoot shoe brand that prioritizes thin, flexible soles and sustainable materials, check out Wildling barefoot shoes. Find everything you need to know in this Wildling Shoes review.

There are barefoot shoes, and then there are Wildling barefoot shoes. Wildling has created a brand that extends beyond the basics of a wide toe box and a thin, flat and flexible sole. They’re trying to embody something more than the freedom of movement their shoes offer. It’s also about the care, consideration, and connection to your surroundings. Wildling is doing this, yes, with the design of the shoe, but also with sustainable, natural materials and processes.

According to Wildling, their company is about “finding new trails to create a positive impact while bringing RE:GENERATION closer together – one minimal step at a time.”

Let’s dive right into this Wildling shoes review and learn all about this innovative barefoot shoe brand.

About the Brand: Wildling Shoes

Back in 2013, Anna and Ran were making a big move—from Israel to Germany. As they settled into the colder climate, their 3 children were no longer as comfortable running around barefoot for most of the year. And when the couple couldn’t find shoes for their kids that met their requirements for freedom of movement, sustainable materials, and fair production, they decided to create their own shoe brand.

Wildling Shoes Logo

It’s been almost a decade since those first discussions on what a healthy, sustainable barefoot shoe brand would look like, and Wildling is now one of the most popular barefoot shoe brands. It was also one of my first experiences with barefoot shoes, so I’ve had the privilege of enjoying Wildling shoes for a number of years and watching the company grow.

Wildling continues to design and manufacture its barefoot shoes for both children and adults with those 3 requirements in mind.

Brand Basics

Wildling has two separate websites: the original international website, and the USA website.

If you’re based in the US, shop at Wildling Shoes USA. Prices are listed in USD and use US sizing. If you’re based in any other country, head to the international Wildling website.

Wildling are very flexible barefoot shoes

Are Wildlings barefoot shoes?

100% Yes. If I put Wildling on a barefoot shoes scale of 1 being a pointed high heel and 10 being a barefoot shoes with a foot-shaped toe box and a thin, flat and flexible sole, Wildlings would most definitely be a 10.

As one of the three founding requirements of Wildling is freedom of movement, Wildling shoes are likely the lightest and most flexible shoes you’ll find. They protect your feet to keep them clean, warm and comfortable, but interfere with your movement as little as possible.

Wildling shoes are based on the anatomical shape of the foot, which means the toe box is wide, giving feet plenty of room to naturally move. The soles are thin and flat, with most shoes featuring a 2.5mm to 3.5mm sole made from recycled rubber and cork. You can easily feel the ground beneath your feet, creating a greater sensory connection to the world around you.

Wildling Shoes Pros and Cons

What I love:

  • As close to barefoot as possible with flexible sole and uppers
  • Sustainable, innovative materials
  • Unique style

What I don’t:

  • Winter shoes can be hard to waterproof and keep the inside clean
  • Edges of sole can separate

Who should buy Wildling Shoes?

Wildling shoes are best for those that are looking for an extremely minimal shoe, almost working as a second skin.

It aligns with those that prioritize sustainability and ethical manufacturing in their purchasing decision. Wildling is a certified B Corp. Their goal is to be a regenerative company. To them that means making a positive impact in all levels of their business, including their production partners, the innovative materials used that focus on regenerative cultivation, and supporting renaturation projects.

Materials, Design and Production

Upper Materials: Natural, sustainable materials including wool, cotton, hemp. Most materials are vegan (no leather), but many of the winter models do include wool

Model Designs: Laces or Elastic Laces, slip-ons, or velcro for Feather sandals only

Most of the Wildling designs are laced up, except a slip on style, a slipper, and the Feather sandal. The kid’s sizes use elastic laces that cinch tight. This makes it easy for a child to get on and off, even if they’re not comfortable tying their own shoes yet. It’s also great for older kids who don’t love the velcro look.

The shoes are designed in Germany and handmade in Portugal. Wildling sets itself apart from most other shoe retailers with the materials it uses and commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.

By manufacturing close by, Wildling not only reduces its environmental impact, but has more transparency into the process and can ensure that its shoes are being sustainably and ethically made.

In another effort to create incredibly comfortable shoes that also have a minimal impact on the environment, the uppers are made from soft and flexible natural materials. I’ve included a basic list of some of the materials for the uppers, but what that doesn’t capture is how thoughtful and innovative they are with those specific materials. For example, the Nittugo is a single piece of a knitted merino blend textile, so there are no seams. The summer Tanukis are made from a super strong and lightweight Japanese Washi paper blend. Many of the materials are organic or recycled and created in a way to save resources or make a better product.

You can find the product and material information for each Wildling Shoes style on their respective page on the website.

Sustainable materials used by barefoot shoe brand Wildling

Wildling Sole Design

Wildling features two sole designs. The original Wildling sole is a unique design with a gap in the middle. This is part of what makes the sole so flexible. The sole is about 2.5mm thick (or thin would be more accurate), and is made from mostly rubber and recycled cork. There is a waterproof material to fill the gap so water doesn’t soak through. The toddler outsole does not have a gap as shown below.

In October 2023, Wildling introduced “Resouled,” a new full coverage outsole. It was made for damp, wet and harsh weather conditions, as the gaps in the original sole aren’t ideal for these situations. Any shoe with “Resouled” in the name will feature this new design.

Durability and Longevity

My son has been consistently wearing Wildlings for about four years, and they’ve been one of his favorite shoes. Last year, he wore his winter pair most days for about 5 months. They were showing their wear at the end, mostly with the front toe portion of the sole starting to separate from the uppers. For us, they lasted a full season of active wear from a kid, which I feel is pretty reasonable for a shoe that is as minimal and as flexible as Wildings are.

I’ve talked with others that have also experienced the sole separating from the uppers, especially at the big toe. For us, this hasn’t impacted functionality. Some people choose to re-glue it; it was not so much of an issue for us that we’ve usually just left as is.

Most of my son’s Wildling shoes are in decent enough play condition after he’s grown out of them that I’m holding onto them for my second child.

With all of that said, Wildlings are more on the delicate end of the spectrum when it comes to shoes. If you (or your child) are rougher on shoes, then they may not last as long for you.

Wildlings do tend to have good resale value, so this is something to consider when you’re calculating affordability. Overall, I’d say Wildlings do well for regular, everyday use.

Wildling Shoes Review

Now that you’ve gotten to know Wildling as a brand, let’s talk about some of the specific shoe styles in this Wildling Shoes review! Wildling has an Essentials collection that is available year-round. This features many of their most popular models. The Essentials include both warm weather styles for spring and summer and cold weather styles for fall and winter.

In addition to the Essentials collection, Wildling releases two seasonal collections per year. Each collection typically has two drop dates. For example, in the fall, a handful of cold weather models are released in September, with a second drop in October.

While all these shoes are in Wildling’s signature style and design, there will be changes in fabrics, colors and details. They do sometimes bring back previous models (find them as Refoxed models). Often they’ll make updates and improvements to the model, so it’s slightly different from prior years.

Wildling Essentials Collection

Let’s start off with the Wildling Essentials Collection. These are sustainably made, minimalist shoes you can order from the Wildling website year-round. Some of my favorites are included in this collection, which means you don’t have to wait for a special launch date! As these are meant to be Essentials, they come in neutral colors of white, black, blue, grey and brown. For all the really fun, bold colors, look to Wildling’s seasonal collections.

Nittugo | Stretchy Merino Wool Knit

Wildling Nebula summer barefoot shoes

These may be one of my favorite Wildling shoes! The stretchy, merino blend knit fabric is made to have a tighter fit, to feel like a second skin. These shoes are super breathable, super lightweight, and easy to wear without socks. Comes in kids – adult sizes. The Nittugo now also comes in black.

Tanuki | Japanese Washi Paper

These are a super lightweight, breathable summer shoe made from Japanese Washi Paper. The material is so cool! The essentials come in white, black and blue, but they have new colors every summer. I find these to a smaller, tighter fit.

Feather Sandals | Microfiber

The Feather sandal comes in toddler through adult sizes. Like all Wildling shoes, these sandals feature a super flexible 2.5mm sole. The uppers are soft microfiber and secure with velcro. These run small, so it may be best to first consult the Wildling size chart, and then size up from there.

Wildling Feather Sandals are minimal sandals for kids and adults

Arni | Cotton

This cotton high-top has a denim look and water-resistant weave that make these shoes perfect for transition weather (or even year-round).

Chestnut | Wool + Hemp with wool lining

We loved this winter style from last year, so I was glad to see stay. The uppers are a rich brown-blue weave made from wool and hemp. It’s neutral, but not boring. The Chestnut style also has a membrane plus felted wool lining. Comes in toddler – adult sizes.

Wildling barefoot shoes for kids and adults

North Wolf

This is Wildling’s warmest model, with a 100% wool upper with a high cut, polyester membrane, and felted wool lining. Comes in toddler – adult sizes.

Spring and Summer Wildling Shoes

The new spring and summer Wildling styles are starting to drop in February 2024. We have some new styles along with someremixes of old favorites.

Wildling Spring 2024 shoes

Pegasus Resouled | Cotton

As this is one of the earlier releases for the new spring and summer 2024 collection, it’s meant for those cooler and often wetter months when winter is over, but the warm weather of summer isn’t quite here. The Pegasus is a mid-cut barefoot shoe featuring a tightly woven cotton canvas in a beautiful sky blue color, and an integrated polyester membrane. If you do plan on wearing these in wet weather, I also recommend adding a water-repellant treatment to the canvas.

This is the second shoe to feature Wildling’s new full coverage sole, again making it better to wear during rainy or cold weather. Due to the sole, I do find this style one of the roomiest around the toes, both in width and volume. I previously tried the Tann Resouled (with the same sole design) in winter, but it didn’t have quite as much space available due to the thicker wool lining.

Pegasus Resouled Wildling barefoot shoes with full coverage sole
Pegasus Resouled Wildling barefoot shoes

Dormouse Refoxed

The Dormouse is another midcut style with a linen and hemp canvas upper. The “Refoxed” in the title means that Wildling previously released a style in the same material. I have a low-cut version of the Dormouse from several years ago–they were my first pair of Wildlings. I love the subtle texture of these shoes and the soft gray color.

Nittugo black

The popular Nittugo has finally been released in a new color — all black.

Wildling Nebula Black barefoot shoes

Fall and Winter Wildling Shoes

The Winter lineup of Wildling shoes uses warm, natural materials like wool or tightly woven cotton canvas for the uppers.  All winter models feature an integrated polyester membrane that helps protect against moisture. The transitional weather models typically have a cotton lining, while the warmest models have a felted wool lining.

Wool is a natural insulator and water repellent, which makes it ideal for both an outer material on a winter shoe and as an inner lining.

Wildling winter shoes review with black high tops

Some Wildling shoes have a waterproofing treatement pre-applied, while others do not. This information is included in the Care section for each style. To make your Wildling shoes more winter-proof and water-repellant, you can apply a waterproofing product. Wildling provides product recommendations in the same Care section for each of its styles. It can also be a good idea to regularly reapply a waterproofing treatment throughout the season.

This “Pearl Moisture Protection product is recommended for shoes with Wool uppers, while this Waterproofing spray is recommended for the cotton uppers. Note that these Wildling products are only available on the International Wildling website.

We’ve found our Wildlings great for moderate winter weather, including occasional light rain or snow. We typically opt for something heavier duty if we’re going to be outdoors in very wet or snowy weather.

Koselig Slip-on Boots | Wool uppers and wool lining

Wildling Koselig boots are wool barefoot boots with a fluffy wool lining

Wildling just dropped their new winter 2025 collection, and the star of the show for me is the Koselig. The name literally means “cozy” in Norwegian—and they live up to it with their soft wool uppers and extra fluffy wool lining.

Wildling sized these up to account for the lining, so I stuck with my usual EU38 and they fit perfectly. (See the side-by-side comparison below with an unlined pair.) These come in both adult and child sizes.

Tejo

The Tejo comes in blue and caramel, and is probably my favorite of the new 2023 Wildling Winter Shoes. It’s made from extra-densely woven recycled cotton, has an integrated membrane, and lined with wool. It’s a great combo to keep your feet warm and dry. Plus, the extra hardware on the eyelets and the contrasting colors on the tongue and heel give these a nice pop. Comes in toddler – adult sizes.

Serra Black

When you want an all black combat boot, but Wildling’s verison. The twill uppers on the Serra black are water-resistant, coupled with a polyester membrane. The lining and insole are a hemp flax fleece, which adds some warmth, but doesn’t make them too warm to wear in spring and fall.

Wildling Serra Super Flexible Vegan Barefoot Combat Boots

Bruklin Chelsea Boots

The Bruklin is a brand new style from Wildling in 2024. The uppers are made from a blend of hemp and wool. These Chelsea boots feature Wildlings newer shell sole that are better for wet weather thanks to the taller sidewalls. Though these are not vegan, they do not feature any leather.  These do not come with a separate insole, but you can order a wool one from Wildling to help with warmth and adjust the volume and cushion. I found these to run true to size. I wear a size EU 38 for my 23.3cm foot measurement. Wildling also has a printable fit kit to help you get the right size.

These brightly colored mid-cut styles use an organic cotton or cotton-blend upper, integrated membrane and cotton lining. These styles are great for the transitional weather in fall and spring, or if you have very mild winters.  The Atmo come in Paprika (red featured below) and black. Vigor is available in golden yellow.

Douro: The Douro is a wool-on-wool style. The uppers 100% felted wool with a wool lining.

Ciclo: This is a low-top style, made with wool uppers and lining. If you’re feet are always getting cold but you don’t necessarily need a high-top, these Ciclo could be a great option.

Slippers

Wildling Nelus slippers are one of the best barefoot slippers

Wildling has two cozy wool slippers with rubber soles.

Lotus Slippers: $59 – $99  | Felted wool uppers and Wildling’s thin and flexible rubber sole with a higher top. Shop Wildling US or Wildling International.

Nelus Slippers: These are the low-top version (pictured below), also using the same felted wool and rubber soles as the Lotus slippers. I like that these are more “slip-on,” but with too loose of a fit on these, they do become floppy. I wear these in my typical Wildling size of EU38 plus thicker socks for a secure fit. If you plan to wear without socks, you may want to size down. I have seen some people have issues with the sole unstitching from the uppers, but I’ve been wearing mine often for a year, and they’ve held up really well.

Ranidae Rain Boots

Wildling Ranidae barefoot rubber rain boots for adults and children

The Wildling Ranidae is the barefoot rain boot we’ve all been waiting for—lightweight, flexible, and actually fun to wear. Unlike stiff, clunky rubber boots, Ranidae moves with you, letting your feet bend and flex naturally while keeping water out. These rubber rain boots have the ultimate barefoot feel we’ve come to expect from Wildling shoes.

The deep-tread sole gives extra grip on slick surfaces, whether you’re splashing through puddles, wandering muddy trails, or just tackling a rainy day in the city. It comes in toddler through adult sizes, with plenty of toe space for a natural fit that doesn’t feel bulky. Made in Italy from vegan, water-repellent SEBS material, the Ranidae is a fresh take on rain boots—because wet weather shouldn’t mean compromising on foot freedom.

Fit and sizing: Designed for year-round wear, the Rainidae boots have room for warm socks in winter but still breathes in warmer weather. If you’re already familiar with Wildling, you’ll find these boots much wider in the toe box than their regular models. I opted for the EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot length, which is my usually size in Wildling shoes. They are a great fit length wise, but a bit roomy in the heel (I have a narrower heel). With thin socks, I’ll probably need to add a heel grip for a more secure fit. However, paired with the new Wildling Calora thicker knit wool socks, they’re a perfect fit. My 3-year-old also got the boots in the same size as the Wildling shoes he’s been wearing all winter, and they’re also a great fit with the wool socks. Hopefully that means he’ll have a little space to grow and continue to wear them through spring and summer with thinner socks.

Fit and Sizing

Wildlings are best fit for:

  •  narrow to medium width
  •  medium to high volume

Wildling shoes have more of a square toe box shape with a slope towards the pinky toe. Fit and sizing will vary depending on the model and on personal preference, but they are generally best for narrow to medium width feet. I have medium width feet, and Wildlings are one of the narrower shoes that I own.

If you have wider feet, you can try sizing up to accommodate your width. Many people who classify their feet as wide or extra wide find they do not have enough space in these shoes.

If you have lower volume feet, you can add an extra insole to take up more space (they sell insoles on their website). The Nittugo are one of the narrower, lower volume options. I find the cotton canvas models to be the wider, higher volume options.

To determine the best size for you, check out the printable FitKits or the size chart. Like I mentioned above, sizing is highly personal and depends on a number of things, like foot length, shape and volume.

For reference:

  • My foot measurement is 23.3cm, and the size chart recommends an EU37. I prefer a little bit more room in my shoes (about 12mm), so typically opt for an EU38 in Wildling shoes and most other barefoot shoes.
  • Aaron’s foot measurement is 26.8cm, and typically wears an EU44, including his Wildling shoes.

If you plan to wear thick socks with your shoes, make sure to wear those socks while measuring. Read more tips on how to measure your feet for barefoot shoes here.

Sizing Option A: Printable FitKit

The easiest way to determine your correct Wildling size is to use the printable FitKits. There are four options—for toddlers, kids, growing feet, and adult feet. Ensure your scale is set to 100% to get an accurate printing. By place your foot on the printable guide, mark the longest point to determine your size. These guides already include the extra space.

Sizing Option B: Measure Feet and Compare to Size Chart

Wildling also has a size chart. Note that the size chart does NOT list the actual insole sizes, but a recommendation based on your foot size. This recommendation includes about 8mm of rolling room.

As a reference, my foot measurement is 23.3cm, and the size chart recommends an EU37. I prefer a little bit more room in my shoes (about 12mm), so typically opt for an EU38.

If you plan to wear thick socks with your shoes, make sure to wear those socks while measuring. Read more tips on how to measure your feet for barefoot shoes here.

Ordering, Shipping and Returns

Wildling has two separate websites: the original international website, and the USA website.

If you’re based in the US, shop at Wildling Shoes USA. Prices are listed in USD and use US sizing. If you’re based in any other country, head to the international Wildling website.

Wilding offers worldwide shipping. Shipping is free on orders over $200. If you’re a first-time customer, you can use the following code for free shipping on any order: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Returns for first-time customers are free. If you’re a return customer or your order is under $200, express shipping to the US starts at $9.90.

Third-party Retailers

Wildling Shoes can currently only be purchased on the two Wildling websites. As of 2023, they do not sell through any third-party online retailers.

Physical Stores

Wildling has several physical showrooms located in Germany where you can try on their shoes. They currently have showrooms in Berlin, Cologne and Engelskirchen. You can find up-to-date hours and info here.

If you’re looking for Wildling Shoes in the USA, keep an eye out for pop-ups. So far, they’ve held several pop-ups in the San Francisco Bay Area over summer 2023. The dates/locations were announced on the Wildling Shoes Instagram. During these pop-ups, they had models to test and try-on, as well as stock available for purchase (isn’t that a barefoot shoe lovers dream—being able to try before you buy and not pay a fortune in shipping?!?)

Wildling Accessories

Wildling sells extra insoles (including wool insoles for additional warmth), laces, and shoe care products, like waterproofing spray and cleaning kits.

Sales for Wildling Shoes

As sustainability is one of the brand’s three main pillars, they try to keep overstock at a minimum. This means styles can sell out before the season is over. So, if there is a color you love, it’s best to get it early! This also means sales are rare for Wildling. They do not hold any holiday-related sales, like a Black Friday sale (see here if you want a list of brands that do offer Black Friday sales).

Wildling goes on occasion offer sales at the end of the season if they have remaining stock leftover. These sales are typically around 20%, though they did offer a 30% discount for a single weekend at the end of this summer. For up-to-date sales, check out the barefoot shoe sale page.

Do you have a Wildling coupon code or discount code?

Wildling does not offer additional percentage discounts through personalized coupon codes or discount codes.

I do have the following code for free shipping on any order: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling does offer a group discount of 20% whenever 5 or more pairs of Wildling shoes are purchased as part of the same order. No code is necessary for this group discount; it will be automatically applied at checkout on the Wildling website. So gather your friends and get a group order together!

If you want to get a better deal on Wildling Shoes, resell groups of Facebook are a great place to check. Wildling Shoes have a strong following and seem to retain their value well. The pro for this is that you can resell a gently used pair for close to retail value (say you got a pair and realized it just didn’t fit your style or wardrobe). The con is that these used options aren’t usually super discounted, though it does depend on the condition.

Find the Wildling B/S/T Facebook group here.

Looking for a barefoot version of the KEEN Newport sandals? This list of closed-toe barefoot water sandals offers plenty of protection plus a more flexible sole.

In the process of switching over to barefoot shoes, you’ll inevitably find yourself searching for a barefoot version of a shoe you used to wear all the time. My DMs are full of questions starting with, “is there a barefoot version of [insert popular shoe style here].” As the barefoot shoe industry has grown exponentially, I can now often respond with a, “Yes, there is. And multiple options too!”

This Barefoot Shoe Trades series will highlight barefoot versions of popular shoe styles, starting with the KEEN Newport sandals.

Are KEEN sandals barefoot shoes?

I think KEEN sandals are a good starting point, but they can definitely be better. It’s true, KEEN sandals do have a wider toe box than most conventional options out there, but for me the biggest issues are their stiffness, heaviness, rigid toe spring, and 10mm+ heel-to-toe drop.

KEEN somewhat remedied this themselves by offering a more minimal version of the Newport Sandals called the Seacamp CNX, which only has a 3-4 mm heel-to-toe drop, but again, I still think we can do better.

That’s why I created this list of closed-toe barefoot sandals that offer the durability and protection of sandals like KEEN, but with much more minimal feel. All of the sandals on this list have a wide, anatomically shaped toe box, and a thin, flat and flexible sole. And they have a secure fit, unlike some wildly popular clogs like Crocs, which are also wildly floppy, and always look like one trip away from disaster.

Reima Valoa barefoot sandals for kids

Reima is a Finnish kidswear brand known for quality and durability, all in service of their mission to help kids spend more time outdoors. While they’ve been making clothing and footwear for over 80 years, they only recently entered the barefoot shoe space, and continue to expand their offerings each year.

The Valoa barefoot sandals are ultra-breathable thanks to their lightweight knit uppers, with synthetic overlays added for extra durability. They feature a wide toe box, zero-drop sole, and flexible construction that supports natural foot development. Sizing and fit are consistent with the rest of Reima’s barefoot line, so if you’ve tried their shoes before, you’ll have a good sense of what to expect. The Vivobarefoot Ultra Bloom are barefoot water shoes made with a lightweight, quick-drying algae-based foam. They are thin, flat and flexible and securely attach to the feet.

Thanks to the breathable hexagon cutouts and molded shape, they offer solid protection while still allowing water to drain and feet to breathe. They’re perfect for all the summer adventures, from the pool to the beach, the splash pad to the creek.

7 Merrell Bare Steps H20 Sneakers

Merrell Bare Steps Barefoot Water Shoes for Toddlers

The Merrell Bare Steps line makes minimimalist shoes for toddlers at a pretty affordable price point. I opt for the wide width for my toddler, even with his average width feet. They have good width and good volume, which I appreciate as many toddlers have thicker feet.

The Bare Steps H2O water shoes provide a good balance of barefoot qualities and protection. The soles are a little bit stiffer in the heel, but overall pretty flexible.

Price: $40 (though I do see these on sale for under $30 sometimes)

Sizes: US4 Toddler – US10 Toddler

Location + Shipping: US

The popular childrenswear brand Reima recently added several barefoot shoe styles to their line-up. Reima kid’s barefoot shoes are well-made, reasonably priced, and have all the features I look for in a healthy shoe for kids. Check out this review for all the details including fit and sizing.

I was first introduced to Reima a few years ago when I was looking for quality wool layers and outerwear for my kids. Reima is a Finnish brand that makes sustainably designed apparel for kids ages 0-12. Reima clothing and gear is made to help kids enjoy outdoor play in any weather. From rain paints to snowsuits to swimsuits, Reima will have your kid covered for all four seasons.

I quickly became a fan of the brand for their high-quality materials, bright, bold colors, and how their clothes made it easier to get out and explore with my kids.

Since one of Reima’s goals is to help kids “discover the joy of movement,” it was exciting to see them apply this principle to their shoe designs. It’s a lot easier to experience the joy of moving your feet and body with foot-shaped, barefoot shoes.

Reima Kids Barefoot Shoes

What are barefoot shoes?

If you’re new here, I like to do a quick recap of what barefoot shoes are (sometimes called minimalist shoes) Here are the main qualities I’m looking for in a barefoot shoe:

  • Wide, foot-shaped toe box — A shoe shouldn’t force a foot into an unnatural shape by squishing the toes together. The toe box should not taper! Feet are widest at the toes, and shoes should reflect that. A kid’s barefoot shoe should allow for plenty of room for those toes to wiggle.
  • Flat aka zero-drop — There shouldn’t be any heel-to-toe drop. A flat shoe allows a child to stand in a natural, neutral position.
  • Thin — This helps keep shoes light and flexible and allows a child to walk naturally
  • Flexible — Again, the focus here is allowing the foot to function naturally, so a shoe should allow the foot to easily bend.

Ankka Barefoot Rain Boots

US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 7.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $55 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima barefoot rain boots for kids

Reima has been steadily releasing new styles for their barefoot line, and the Ankka rain boots are just the newest addition. The soles are zero-drop (so many rain boots have such a chunky heel!) with enough grip for wet pavement. And of course, the toe box is widened to a natural foot shape. They’re easy to pull on and have a soft cotton lining. They pair perfectly with Reima’s rain pants and jackets, all of which is totally waterproof and PFAS-free. We love that they’re lightweight and flexible, which is ideal for all-day play.

The Ankka runs true to size with enough space for a medium-thick sock. If your child is between sizes or want extra growth room, I recommend sizing up. Like most of Reima’s shoes, there is a removable insole with their Happy Fit markings, so you can easily see if you got the right size.

Astelu Kid’s Barefoot Sneakers

US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 7.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $60 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Kids barefoot sneakers - Astelu

You can tell people are excited about the Reima kid’s barefoot shoes when it sells out almost immediately. By the time I was able to test the shoes (or have my kids test them) and get this review up, many of the Astelu sneaker sold out. Fortunately, they are restocking for 2024 spring and summer. Plus, they have new colors! These barefoot sneakers are available on both the US Reima website and the International Reima website. The colors and the size offerings vary between the websites.

The Astelu kids sneakers have a knit, breathable upper, making them a great option for warmer weather. Let’s get into the review!

 What I Loved:

  •  Sole is thin, flexible and zero-drop
  • They look great! Older kids can start getting pickier about how their shoes look, and these have a simple, yet on-trend design.
  • Elastic laces— look of laces and can be somewhat adjusted based on shortening or lengthening the laces and retying the ends, but still very easy to get on and off. Plus, you don’t have to worry about untied shoes.
  • They go up to size EU40 (about a US women’s 8/9, so these can work both for older kid’s and some adults. I’m tempted to get a pair!

Room For Improvement:

  • Lower volume over the toes. Ideally, I’d love to see more space here
  • These would best for narrow to medium width feet. I’d love to see a wider option from Reima too.
  • The knit upper is great for breathability, but I could see them getting snagged or ripped on something like tree branches. We’ve used them mostly for school, the playground, and walking around town.  In 2024 they added a reinforcement layer over the toe area, so this really helps with durability!

 Construction and Materials

  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 0mm
  • Sole Material: Rubber
  • Removeable insole? Yes
  • Laces or Velcro? Elastic Laces
  • Upper material: Elastic knitted up with water repellant finish
  • Reinforced toe cap (new for 2024)
  • Colors: Pink, Navy Blue, Greyish Green, Black, Dark Mango
  • Made in: China

Note the reinforced toe cap on this 2024 version

Fit & Sizing

Overall, these seem to be a good fit for narrow to medium width feet. They are also somewhat low volume over the toes.

The size chart for this style provides insole length; we found it to fit the shorter end of the length range provided. For example the insole on the US13/13.5 (EU31) we tested was about 19cm.

These are available in toddler to big kid sizes. The sizing availability differed from the US and EU website, but this is what is currently listed:

  • US Sizes Toddler 11 – Kids 6.5
  • EU Sizes 22 – 40
Reima Aster Knit Barefoot Sneakers for kids

Rantaan Kid’s Barefoot Sandals

US Sizes Toddler 11 – Kids 6.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $40 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Kids Barefoot Shoes

What I Loved:

  • Sole is thin, flexible and zero-drop
  • Polka dot mesh is breathable and dries quickly, which is great for summer
  • Colors are fun and bright
  • Easy off with the Velcro—my two year old can take these off on his own
  • More affordable option. I know affordability is all relative and very subjective, but these represent a more affordable price point compared to most other barefoot shoes.

Room for improvement:

  • Pretty easy to put on, except for the fact that sometimes the pinky toe gets caught in the cut out when putting them on. Not a deal breaker, I just need to be aware when putting them on
  • Similar to the sneakers, these are lower volume over the toes. I’d love to see something a little wider and higher volume, especially in the toddler sizes as they tend to have thicker feet.
  • The removeable insole seems thicker than necessary. I’d love to see a thinner insole on this (it’s thicker than the insole for the sneaker)

 Construction and Materials

  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 0mm
  • Sole Material: Rubber
  • Removeable insole? Yes
  • Laces or Velcro? Velcro
  • Upper material: Mesh and fabric with a foam-like polka dot material sandwiched in between
  • Colors: Navy Blue, Misty Red, Red Orange,
  • Made in: China
Reima's new barefoot shoes for kids

Fit & Sizing

Like I mentioned for the sneakers, these too are lower volume over the toes. I’d love to see something a little wider and higher volume, especially in the toddler sizes as they tend to have thicker feet.

Both toddler and big kids sizing is available in Reima’a barefoot sandals. The sizing availability differed from the US and EU website, but this is what is currently listed:

  • US Sizes Toddler 11 – Kids 6.5
  • EU Sizes 22 – 40

I did find these to run a few centimeters longer than what is listed on the size chart. For example, per the size chart, a US6/6.5 should have an insole length of 12.7 – 13.2cm. The actual insole of my sandal was about 13.6cm.

Valoa Barefoot Sandals

US Sizes Toddler 11 – Kids 6.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $75 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Valoa barefoot sandals for kids

The Reima Valoa sandals are a fantastic summer option for active kids. Made with a lightweight mesh upper, they’re ultra breathable—perfect for keeping feet cool on hot days. The closed-toe design provides excellent toe protection, which is a huge plus for outdoor play or even casual hikes.

These sandals also offer a secure, adjustable fit thanks to the easy-to-use toggle closure, so you don’t have to worry about them slipping off mid-adventure. Like Reima’s other barefoot shoes, the Valoa sandals have a wide toe box, zero drop sole, and flexible construction that supports natural foot development. Sizing and fit are consistent with the rest of Reima’s barefoot line, so if you’ve tried their shoes before, you’ll know what to expect.

Tallustelu Kid’s Waterproof Barefoot Sneakers

US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $75 – $80 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima Tallustelu waterproof barefoot shoes for kids

The Tallustelu sneaker is another great addition to Reima’s barefoot shoes. These barefoot waterproof sneakers have been perfect for exploring in cold, wet weather.

These are similar in fit and sizing to the Astelu sneakers, but have more overlays to improve durability. They’re obviously not as breathable, so are better suited to cooler weather. The elastic laces are easy to tighten, so a child can get a secure fit.

These now also coming smaller toddler sizes called the Tepastelu, and feature a large velcro strap to secure.

Loikkii and Hyppii Waterproof Boots

US Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 6.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $90 – $100 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

For winter, Reima has the Hyppii waterproof boots for toddlers, and the Loikkii waterproof boots for bigger kids. They’re a similar design, but the Hyppii feature a large velcro strap that opens wide, making them very easy for my three-year-old to get on all by himself. The Loikkii for bigger kids use elastic laces, which can be easily tightened down.

 What I Loved:

  •  Sole is thin, flexible and zero-drop
  • Velcro and Elastic laces— so easy for kids to put on by themselves!
  • More volume than some of the other Reima barefoot shoes, so they easily fit my toddlers chunkier feet
  • Kept my kid’s feet warm and dry in rain and light snow

Room For Improvement:

  • While these did well in wet conditions, the shorter shaft means water can drop in from the top if kids like to splash, or run too deep in to the water
  • Narrower than some other barefoot shoe options–so work best for those with narrow feet

Durability

Our Reima clothes have been high quality and hard wearing, and so far, these shoes have proved to be the same. Based on the mesh and the knit, they could be more prone to holes or snagging. The sandal also has toe bumper, which should help with the durability on the mesh.  The 2024 version of the Astelu sneakers now has a reinforced toe area as well.

We’ve used them for school, around town, down by the creek, to the beach, to the lake, etc. Also, if your child tends to be pretty tough on shoes, then these may not be the best option for them. Overall, I think it’s a good balance of affordability and breathability when looking for a kid’s barefoot shoe for summer.

Reima kids summer sandals

Conclusion

Reima’s barefoot shoes for kids offer a fantastic balance between durability, flexibility, and a foot-friendly design. With their wide toe box, zero-drop sole, and lightweight construction, they support natural movement while standing up to the demands of active play. Many of the models are best suited to those with narrower or lower volume feet.

If you’re searching for kids’ barefoot shoes that can handle everything from playground adventures to outdoor excursions, Reima’s lineup is definitely worth considering!

Good rain boots for kids should make it easy and fun to play in the rain, but most rain boots are clunky, narrow and heeled. Check out this guide for the best rain boots for kids and toddlers — they’re lightweight, flat, flexible for easy movement, plus foot-shaped for comfort.

One of the best ways to cheer up on a rainy, gloomy day is to help your kids pull on their rain boots and head outside. Usually, you’ll see a wide grin spread across their faces and hear a few giggles as they jump and splash from puddle to puddle.

Unfortunately, those splashes can be a bit wobbly as many rain boots are heeled, stiff and narrow. While some people might like the aesthetics of a pointed and heeled boot, it’s not a great option for foot health and development, especially for kids.

Best Minimalist Rain Boots for Kids

Here is a list of the best barefoot rain boots for kids with these healthy features, so they can worry less about their uncomfortable boots, and more about having fun in the rain.

Our Favorite: Wildling Ranidae Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 7 – Adults | Rubber | $69 – $99 | Free shipping code: AWN_ BAREFOOTSHOEGUIDE

Wildling Ranidae barefoot rubber rain boots

The Wildling Ranidae is the barefoot rain boot we’ve all been waiting for—lightweight, flexible, and actually fun to wear. Unlike stiff, clunky rubber boots, Ranidae moves with you, letting your feet bend and flex naturally while keeping water out. These rubber rain boots have the ultimate barefoot feel we’ve come to expect from Wildling shoes. With its one-piece molded design, there are no seams that could split or let water in later on.

The deep-tread sole gives extra grip on slick surfaces, whether you’re splashing through puddles, wandering muddy trails, or just tackling a rainy day in the city. It comes in toddler through adult sizes, with plenty of toe space for a natural fit that doesn’t feel bulky. They’re available in orange or yellow for kids, and orange or forest green for adults. Made in Italy from vegan, water-repellent SEBS material, the Ranidae is a fresh take on rain boots—because wet weather shouldn’t mean compromising on foot freedom.

The Ranidae boots are our clear favorite for barefoot rain boots. They’re incredibly light, cleverly designed with no seams to leak, and have a sturdier tread than the rest.

Fit and sizing: The Ranidae boots are slightly wider and higher volume than Wildling shoes in the same size. Designed for year-round wear, they have enough room for warm socks in winter while still allowing breathability in warmer weather.

I chose an EU38 based on my 23.3cm foot length, which is my usual Wildling size. The length is perfect, but they feel loose without thicker socks. For warmer weather, I’d add a heel grip for a more secure fit. However, with the new Wildling Calora thicker knit wool socks, they fit perfectly.

My 3-year-old got the same size as his current Wildling shoes, and they fit well with the thick wool socks. Hopefully, he’ll have a little room to grow and can continue wearing them into spring and summer with thinner socks.

Saguaro Brisk Kid’s Rain Boots

Sizes EU24 through Adult | Rubber | $50 with code KELLY15

These flexible rain boots from Saguaro shoes are now available in kid’s sizes, starting at EU24. They tick all the boxes for a solid barefoot rain boot, including a wide toe box, and a flat and flexible sole.

They’re fully waterproof with a taller shaft cinches at the top. The rubber shaft is flexible and pretty thin—if you get the unlined version, it’s a little floppy. But if you get the lined version, it’s warmer and has more structure. They recently updated the sole for more tread.

Reima Ankka Rain Boots

S Sizes Toddler 6 – Kids 7.5 | EU Sizes 22 – 40 | Price: $55 | Code BAREFOOT20 for 20% off

Reima barefoot rain boots for kids

The Reima Ankka rain boots are one of the newest additions to their barefoot line in 2025. They have a naturally-shaped toe box and a flexible sole. They’re decently lightweight (not as light as the Wildlings), but still perfect for all-day play. The soles provide enough grip on wet cement.

They’re easy for kids to pull on by themselves and have a soft cotton lining for comfort. Like all of Reima’s rain gear (we love their waterproof rain jackets and pants too), these boots are totally waterproof and PFAS-free, making them a safe and practical choice.

The Ankka runs true to size with room for a medium-thick sock. If your child is between sizes or you want extra growth room, sizing up is a good idea. The removable insole features Reima’s Happy Fit markings, which makes it easy to check sizing as your child grows.

Ten Little Kids Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 6 – 13 | Rubber | $46

Ten Little Minimalist Rain Boots for Kids and Toddlers

With a spacious toe box and a flat, flexible sole, Ten Little’s rain boots for kids are a solid barefoot-friendly option. The thicker sole does make them a bit heavier, but they’re still far lighter and more comfortable than most traditional rain boots. My toddler has really enjoyed wearing them, and I love that he can slip them on easily. Available in four colors.

Tree Grandpa Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5 – Little Kid 10 | Rubber | $20 – $24

These flexible rubber rain boots for toddlers were recommend by multiple readers on Instagram, and at such a great price point, I had to try them out! Tree Grandpa rain boots for kids are only available on Amazon for about $24 and in 9 different colors. These are also available on Amazon Canada.

I like that they’re very lightweight, flexible and easy to put on. They do have a shorter shaft, so if you have a child that really likes to make a big splash or is wading into some creeks, they may let some water in from the top.

BeLenka Pudds Rain Boots

Sizes EU22 – 31 | Rubber | $60 (on sale for $40!) | KELLY5 for 5% off

BeLenka brings their expertise as one of the biggest brands in barefoot shoes to their new rubber rain boot for kids, the Pudds boot. They’re made from thermoplastic rubber, ultra light and super flexible. They come in traditional colors like yellow and black along with a dusty pink and bright aqua blue. While they are listed for $60, I’ve seen these kids’ wellies on sale for $40.

Bundgaard Tall Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5.5 – Youth 2 | Rubber | $70 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Bundgaard Tall Rubber Rain Boots for Kids

Bundgaard is a Danish company that makes  basic rubber rain boots with a simple cotton lining. However, these have a wide toe box, unlike many boots which tend to narrow and squish the toes. They also have a very flat, flexible sole. This style comes in a large color variety, from classic yellow, pastels like lavender and mint green, or a simple navy.

Bundgaard is available in the US from PedTerra, which offers free shipping and returns. Use code KELLY to get 10% off your first purchase at PedTerra.

Bundgaard Short Rubber Rain Boots

Sizes Little Kid 5.5 – Youth 2 | Rubber | $65 | Code KELLY10 for 10% off

Bundgaard Short Rubber Rain Boots for Kids

These shorter Bundgaard boots are zero-drop and ankle-high. You can choose from an unlined version, or one lined with cozy wool if you need  something fully waterproof and extra warm. These cute rubber boots look just like a little shark. The toe is roomy and they’re flat and flexible.

Vivobarefoot Fulham or Lumi Boots

Sizes Little Kid 9 – Youth 6 | Treated Leather or Synthetic Uppers | $85 – $118 | Code BSG20 for 20% off

This is a classic Chelsea boot from Vivobarefoot featuring waterproof (so puddle-proof!) uppers, fleece lining and a removable thermal insole. These are a great option if you want something much more flexible and warmer than what is offered by a rubber rain boot. The Lumi boot is heavier duty, and can also be used as a snow or winter boot.

Koel Rana Boots

Sizes EU 24 – 43 | Aqua Stop Tex membrane | Versions available with Lambswool lining | $113+

These are an ultimate outdoor boot that will have your kids ready to play all day, no matter the weather. These have flexibility in the sole of a barefoot shoe plus grippy lugs. They also feature Aqua Stop Tex membrane to keep the foot dry for longer. This version is fully lined with merino wool, so it can be used through very cold winter days. If you’re in the US, I’d recommend checking PedTerra first as they have free shipping and free returns, and you can get 10% off with code KELLY. Otherwise, you can shop directly online at Koel.

Koel also has rubber rain boots for kids with a wide toe box for $50.

Target Cat & Jack Rain Boots – Compromise Option

Sizes Little Kid 5 – Youth 6 | Rubber | $20 – $25

Cat & Jack No Heel Rain Boots for Kids

The Target Brand Cat & Jack makes a solid no heel rain boot option. They’re also very flexible. The down side is that they aren’t the widest in the toe box. If your kids only need rain boots occasionally, these are a solid compromise option that’s easy to find and pretty affordable. This brand does have some heeled options, but it’s usually the boots with the pull on handles that are zero-drop (or pretty close to it). Sometimes styles go up t
